Just About Fine
Description
Columbia France. No binding. Just About Fine. [Paris: Columbia France, 1965]. Set of nine vintage original borderless French photos, varying in size but approximately 7 x 9 1/2" (18 x 24 cm). Most of the photos have code numbers written on verso, overall just about fine. One of the classics of the French New Wave, Le bonheur is a deeply subversive feminist look at marriage. At a 2019 tribute to Agnès Varda, Sheila Heti, A. S. Hamrah, and Jenny Chamarette included Le bonheur among their favorite of Varda's films, with Charmarette claiming it as her favorite, and describing it as "like nothing else: a horror movie wrapped up in sunflowers, an excoriating feminist diatribe strummed to the tune of a love ballad. It's one of the most terrifying films I've ever seen." Hamrah called Le bonheur "Varda's most shocking movie," adding "it's deeply subversive and works like a horror film... How many films are truly shocking the way Le bonheur is? I don't think there are any others." Heti stated "I don't have a favorite, but the one I think about most often is probably Le bonheur because it had such a devastating ending. It is perhaps the most straightforward in terms of story-telling, yet truly radical – emotionally radical, come the end... It's impossible to stop thinking about this ending and what it says about love, life, chaos, and fate." (Wikipedia)

Description
1876. New Brunswick. Acts of the General Assembly of Her Majesty's Province of New Brunswick [1876, 1881-83, 1887, 1890, 1895] Six books. Octavo (6" x 9"). Stab-stitched volumes with printed wrappers bound into contemporary quarter cloth over marbled boards, typewriiten paper title labels. Some shelfwear and soiling, internally clean. ex-library. Shelf location labels to spines, small stamps to title pages. $250. * Valuable for their insights into New Brunswick during the late nineteenth century, these volumes are from a series that commenced in 1786. Settled by the French, New Brunswick was taken by the British in 1759 and incorporated into the colony of Nova Scotia. Its population expanded significantly through an influx of Loyalists after the American Revolution. Its enlarged population and distance from Halifax, the capital of Nova Scotia, led the colonial administrators to establish New Brunswick as a separate colony in 1784. The first collection of New Brunswick acts, covering the years 1786-1805, was published in 1805. In 1867 New Brunswick was one of the six colonies that became the Canadian Confederation. Description
New York / Rochester, New York: S.N, 1869. Newspaper. Good. Soiled, small tears to edges. 1869 Newspaper. Above the fold feature: Monarch prize short-horn, property of Charles K. Ward, Le Roy, Genesee County, New York. Rural New Yorker was a weekly periodical founded in 1850 that was published by the Rural Publishing Co., New York City. The magazine continued through the middle of the 20th century. Daniel D.T. Moore founded the publication as Moore's Rural New Yorker in Rochester, New York in 1850. Moore later became mayor of Rochester in 1865. After moving the paper to New York City (it opened a branch office at the old New York Times building at 41 Park Row by 1869), financial setbacks caused him to give up the paper in the 1870s. After moving to New York City, the paper eventually had offices at 34 Park Row, the Scott & Bowne Building at Chambers and Pearl Streets (409 Pearl), and around 1911 it moved to the old Chelsea Methodist Church on West Thirtieth Street, where it remained for many years. John J. Dillon was editor and publisher of the paper for over 58 years, from about 1892 until his death in 1950. Mary Bassett Clarke wrote for the paper. A quilt pattern column was published under the name of "Mrs. R.E. Smith" from 1930 to 1937. Starting in 1890 it ran the motto "A Square Deal" to reflect the fact that it guaranteed that subscribers would not be treated unfairly by its advertisers, taking great efforts to make them whole. As of 1956, the publication still had 300,000 subscribers. It was acquired by American Agriculturist and merged in 1964, which is now published by Farm Progress.
