Description
[London:] Susan Allix, [2005\ One of twenty-one copies, this being number seven. Signed and numbered in pencil by the author on the colophon. Quarter black goatskin over Japanese wood veneer paper-covered boards. The wafer thin wood has been printed, stained gray, air-brushed in soft red and black and wax polished. Paper and reversed goat skin onlays in black, gray, magenta, and green. Black Japanese paper doublures and the endpapers have cuts outs onto a doorway printed onto the flyleaves. . Folio. Twenty-six photographs, of which sixteen are black and white and ten are in color. Twenty of the photographs are full-page. Among the photographs are a series of prints: seven etchings, one lino-cut, and one woodcut. There is also stencil, air brush, and crayon work and some titles are printed on gray Japanese or Zerkall papers. The photographs are printed, with the text, on Somerset pure cotton printmaking paper using archival inks; this combination of ink with uncoated paper ensures a long life for the images without fading. Signed by the author on preliminary blank: "For Denis / Warmest regards / Susan / 24th January 2007." Illustrated prospectus and biographical article about the author, entitled "God is in the detail," laid in. A fine copy in a gray cloth, felt-lined clamshell case with an illustrated spine label. This book combines Roman poetry with photographs of doorways from south Italy. Writing mostly during the 1st century BC-AD, the poet used a genre of Greek and Roman literature known as the Paraclausithyron: a poem spoken 'through closed doors' that takes the form of verses spoken by an excluded lover outside a door that forbids entry. Their themes include pleas for admission, attempts to persuade a girl to come out to them, and complaints at the door's cruelty. The doors speak too. Becoming personified, they tell stories of their owners and describe their own misfortunes and abuse [...] The first poem is by the Greek poet Theocritus and is set in Sicily. The more strident voices of Roman poets follow, with an extract from Plautus' comedy Curculio. Among the cast of lovers and their girls are found generals, a wine-biber, a dead husband, and the doors themselves, voicing their own opinions..." (from the prospectus). Winner of the Gregynog Letterpress Prize 2005.

Description
Boston: Garrison and Knapp, 1832. First Edition. 1st edition of the founding document in the Anti–Slavery movement. Original, sewn, tan, printed wrappers, untrimmed and unrepaired. A few smudges to front cover, both covers a little creased, spots to title page, and some stains, else very good, complete, untouched, and unrepaired. Scarce, and not only scarce (more so in original wrappers) but of the utmost importance. Only 2 copies have sold at auction in the last 100 years (one of them without the wrappers). Rare Book Hub shows 7 more in bookseller’s catalogs (some without wrappers) also looking back 100 years, and we found one more, but do not get too excited, it's not that rare or it wouldn’t be $4,000. Nonetheless, if you are a librarian or collector who is interested in Black Americana and do not have this book, buying ours should be irresistible. Collation: octavo. 16pp. References: Sabin 52655n. LCP 6496. AI 13659. Not in Work. Not in Blockson. In announcing the aims and plan for the Society, this constitution proclaims: “We, the undersigned, hold that every person, of full age and sane mind, has a right to immediate freedom from personal bondage of whatsoever kind. We hold that whoever retains his fellow man in bondage, is guilty of a grievous wrong. We hold that a mere difference of complexion is no reason why any man should be deprived of his natural rights, or subjected to any political disability…" The text concludes: "To do away the horrors of slavery, and prevent such ravages as are here depicted, we do most earnestly invite the co-operation of our fellow citizens; and we can hardly conceive how any one is entitled to the name of a philanthropist or of a Christian, who is either ashamed or afraid thus to show himself A Friend to His Country and A Friend to the Black Man.” –Arnold Buffum, President. Wm. Lloyd Garrison, Secretary. This bold declaration of principles marked a profound shift in abolitionist strategy, championing immediate and uncompromising freedom rather than gradual approaches that had previously dominated reform circles. The constitution's moral clarity and righteous conviction provided the intellectual foundation for a movement that would transform American society, challenging citizens to confront the nation's most grievous contradiction—professing liberty while sanctioning bondage. Garrison and Buffum's manifesto elevated the discourse from political expediency to moral imperative, insisting that human rights transcended all considerations of economics, tradition, or racial prejudice. The New–England Anti–Slavery Society was founded by William Lloyd Garrison and Arnold Buffum in 1832, with Buffum serving as president and Garrison as secretary. Garrison had begun publishing The Liberator (an anti–slavery newspaper) in 1831, when the topic was highly controversial. In 1833, Garrison helped establish the American Anti-Slavery Society as a national organization, while the New-England Anti-Slavery Society continued to operate regionally. The American Anti-Slavery Society became the largest and most influential organization opposing slavery up to the Civil War, and Garrison was identified as "the chief apostle" of abolitionism by Frederick Douglass, though their relationship evolved over time. Garrison's advocacy for immediate emancipation, as expressed in the Constitution of the New-England Anti-Slavery Society, helped shape the abolitionist movement's principles and approach to combating slavery in America.

iiv+380 pages with illustrations, diagrams, tables, and index. Royal octavo (9 3/4" x 6 1/4") bound in quarter brown leather with gilt lettering to spine over blue marbled boards. From the library of Dino Ruggieri. Volume V (5). (Betts: 7-25). First edition. The Chess Monthly of Great Britain was one of the first to give properly annotated games. The principal editor, Leopold Hoffer, was helped enormously by having Johannes Hermann Zukertort as co-editor until his death in 1888. There were four regular sections: news, annotated games, problems and endgames. In addition, Hoffer carried on a profoundly bitter feud with his one-time benefactor, Wilhelm Steinitz. This publication should not be confused with The Chess Monthly published in the United States which was short lived from 1857-1862 and edited by Fiske and Morphy.Dino Ruggieri was born in, a small city in the Buenos Aires province, October 22, 1921. His parents were both Italians, natives of Porto D'Ascoli. In their early years in Argentina, the Ruggieri's family lived in the country, located about 45 miles from his birth city. The family was engaged in agriculture. When Ruggieri was 8, his father purchased a home in his birth city, where he lived until 2008. In 1938 he was involved in an accident and he was transferred to Buenos Aires for recovery. This was the beginning of his hobby of chess, both as a player over the board and by correspondence, but as well as a major collector of chess materials. After his recovery he became a prominent local chess player and very good representative in postal chess, where he represented Argentina in matches against Italy, Yugoslavia, Holland and other countries. He was using the correspondence with his rivals to offer exchanges. Ruggieri was related to Mr Niemeijer and soon began exchanging materials and making important purchases. He also had frequent contacts with Gregorio Lastra, Normando Ivaldi, Gaspar Soria and Carlos De Veyga, all known collectors of chess. He died in 2009 at the age of 88.Condition:Corners bumped, Ruggieri's stamp to front end paper, some foxing else a very good copy of a scarce item.

Rudolph Valentino, Alice Terry, Alan Hale, Nigel De Brulier, Wallace Beery, Jean Hersholt, dir: Rex Ingram; Metro. Flawless, fine. The film which made Rudolph Valentino a legend. It earned ten million dollars during it's initial release ($300 million in today's dollars) and is famous for the torrid tango scene, but the film is much more. It is the story of the devastation of the Great War (having just ended in 1918) on the people of Argentina. The film was masterfully directed by Ingram (who would marry leading lady Alice Terry at the end of filming). Valentino paid for much of his wardrobe used in the film, and made so little money for his role that he spent the next year paying off his wardrobe bill. Fortunately he would soon be paid better. To this day, this is one of the most visually stunning of all American silent films. It was placed on the National Film Registry in 1995. This profile portrait of Valentino in his dance costume as character Julio Desnoyers is very rare and photographed by Evans, LA.

[Philadelphia?, 1863. 8pp. Caption title [as issued]. Disbound with some loosening, light wear, Good+. A Democratic Justice of Pennsylvania's Supreme Court, Woodward ran for Governor in 1863. He had blamed the War on the Republicans, argued that no justification existed for excluding slavery from the Territories, and hinted that the South's secession was justified on grounds of self-defense. This anti-Woodward pamphlet shows that, at the 1837 State Constitutional Convention, he attempted to prevent foreigners from voting or holding office in Pennsylvania. "Now that he is a candidate for office and needs the foreign vote, look out for denials and contradictions of his sentiments!" LCP 11373. Bartlett 5959. Not in Eberstadt, Decker, Nevins, Sabin.

"In late July, 1864, four gentlemen from Georgia decided to make one last, desperate attempt to find gold in the foothills of the Continental Divide near Prickly Pear Creek. Their efforts were successful and the 'Last Chance' camp was established. By early fall it was decided that 'Last Chance' was not a suitable name for the rapidly growing camp. After much debate and many possibilities, 'Helena' was decided upon - named after the hometown of one of the organizers, John Sommerville from Helena, Minnesota.
