Description
1877. First Edition. (UNITED STATES CONGRESS). Report of the Joint Special Committee to Investigate Chinese Immigration. Washington: Government Printing Office, 1877. Thick octavo, original green cloth. $950.First edition, Senate issue, of the report of the joint congressional committee on Chinese Immigration, a prelude to the 1882 Chinese Exclusion Act.The Joint Committee on Chinese Immigration gathered an exceptionally large amount of testimony, gathered here in this almost 1300-page report. With a focus on the American West, particularly California and the Pacific coast, it concluded that while ""the Pacific coat has been a great gainer"" from the presence of Chinese workers, ""laboring men and artisans, perhaps without exception"" were opposed to ""the influx of Chinese,"" perceiving them as a threat to their jobs. The Committee deemed that the Chinese immigrants, ""an indigestible mass in the community, distinct in language, pagan in religion, inferior in mental and moral qualities, and all peculiarities, [are] an undesirable element in a republic… The Pacific coast must in time become either American or Mongolian."" This virulent anti-Chinese sentiment lead to the passage of the Chinese Exclusion Act five years later in 1882, effectively barring all Chinese immigration to the United States for over 60 years. Cowan 120. Faint marginal dampstaining to front free endpapers and first few leaves, with related staining to the front board; minor wear to cloth extremities. A very good copy.

QUITTANCE FOR THE OFFICE OF COMMISSAIRE-VÉRIFICATEUR | VOUVRAY, FRANCE, 1702 | SALT TAX (GABELLE) ADMINISTRATION UNDER LOUIS XIV
Seller
Second Story Books, ABAA (United States)
Description
Vouvray, 1702. Other. Quarto (w. 13 in. x h. 9.75 in.), 1 page. In Good minus condition. Light uneven soiling and age toning overall, with multiple creases from contemporaneous folding. Some handwriting faded to illegibility. Approximately one-twelfth of the document (along the bottom edge) torn away, affecting one of three subsequent notarial additions. Quittance for the venality of office, issued at Paris, December 1702, confirming the payment of 300 livres for the post of Commissaire-Vérificateur particulier des Rôles et États for the parish of Vouvray (Touraine; here spelled “Voiurar”). Printed form on parchment, with notarial entries, additions, and endorsements; verso with registration at the Contrôle général des finances in Paris. Vouvray, situated in the province of Touraine (modern Indre-et-Loire, within the Généralité de Tours), was subject to the salt tax (or, gabelle). The office carried responsibility for oversight of fiscal rolls in the distribution of salt under the gabelle, one of the most detested imposts of the Ancien Régime. Such offices were routinely sold to raise crown revenues, particularly during the War of the Spanish Succession (1701–1714). A scarce survival illustrating the fiscal administration of Louis XIV’s France and the venality of local offices tied to the gabelle. RW Consignment. Shelved at Rockville, Room A, General Ephemera Part 2. 1402616. Special Collections.

Description
NY: Harcourt Brace Jovanovich, 1980. First Edition, first printing. Very wonderful and interesting signed presentation from West on the front endpaper: “For Eddie, with loving memories of Hannah and Harold, of his father, Frank who was my Sunday School teacher. Let us meet again as the Milhauses have done for years before us- and be thankful for all that came to us from them. With love and happy days to come, Jessamyn. July 22, 1980.” The presentation is to Edward Milhous Nixon, youngest brother of President Richard Milhous Nixon. Hannah refers to Nixon’s mother and Harold refers to his older brother, who died when he was only 24 years old. Frank is President Nixon’s father- who was a Quaker. Obviously, West and the family had a close relationship- all living in Yorba Linda, California. The presentation is, obviously, after Nixon resigned the Presidency in 1974. A great association copy!!. 8vo., cloth & boards in dust jacket; 273 pages. Very Good (covers nice & bright; contents clean & tight); little edgewear (few tiny tears) d/j.
