Description
New York: Signet, 1987. First edition. First edition. Signed by author Bill Adler on the dedication page with the inscription, "8-14-87 To Steve, from his old pal Adler, who's finally found a job he likes (and I don't mean p.r.). Love, Adler." 192 pp. with 16 pages of photos. Bound in publisher's wraps. Very Good, typical shelfwear and rubbing along edges, faint crease to spine, pages toned with age. One of the very first books devoted to hip-hop, a biography of the first superstars of rap, Run-DMC, written by the music industry figure and producer who wrote the group's hit song "Christmas in Hollis." His archive of hip hop material spanning 1970-2013 is held by Cornell University Library. A very early example of hip-hop in book form, published at a time when rap was still dismissed by many as a novelty.

Description
1936. SEGUY, Eugene Alain. Code Universel des Couleurs. Encyclopedie Pratique du Naturaliste XXX. lxviii pp. Illustrated with 55 plates showing 720 colours. 8vo, 154 x 169 mm, bound loose as issued in the original cloth portfolio. Paris: Paul Lechevalier, 1936. First Edition. A system of precise designation of colours for the exact and natural sciences. The format is interesting; it consists of 48 loose plates on stiff glossy paper stock each with 15 colours printed in "quadrichromie" (4 colour process) together with 7 masks of various colours for isolating individual colour samples against different colored backgrounds. The author was an official of the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle and had previously been a miniature painter. This work is comparable to those of Dauthenay (q.v.) and Wilson (q.v.); all of them were attempts to establish standardization of colour nomenclature for naturalists. It would also appear to have been influenced by the Code des Couleurs of Klincksieck & Valette of 1908; it has exactly the same number of colours and more or less the same format. The present work is scarce; it is not in the Birren Collection nor any of the other references at hand.

Description
Cöllen: Wilhelm Metternich, 1718. 103 x 60 mm. (4 1/16 x 2 3/8"). 6 p.l., 232 pp. Pleasing contemporary sprinkled calf, raised bands, spine densely gilt in compartments with central fleuron and leafy cornerpieces, marbled endpapers. In a repaired cardboard slipcase. Front pastedown with book label of Abel E. Berland. Shallow chip across head of spine, extremities a bit rubbed, small abrasion and half a dozen minor scratches to lower board, text a bit browned, with occasional mild foxing (because of inferior paper quality), a handful of leaves trimmed a bit close at head (without loss of text), but still a very satisfactory copy, clean and fresh internally, and in its sound, pleasant original binding. This is a rare edition of a pocket-sized High German translation of a portion of Blosius' "Instructions for the Ascetic Life," written for monks and nuns. Blosius, also known as Louis de Blois (1506-66), entered the Abbey of Liessies in Flanders when he was 14, and became its abbot at 24. He reformed the lax monastic practices of his predecessors, and wrote a number of popular works on spirituality that were widely translated. The present volume comes from the very distinguished collection of Chicago bibliophile Abel Berland (1915-2010). The sale of books from his library at Christie's in New York on 8 and 9 October 2001 was one of the most important bibliophilic events of the new century, bringing in more than $14,000,000..

Very Good+
Description
New York: Dodd, Mead & Company. Very Good+. 1934. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [a good sound copy, light dust-soiling to top of text block, spine a little darkened]. (pen and ink drawings) A novel themed around the post-slavery migration of African-Americans from the South to the North, focusing on a group of "plantation Negroes" whose way of life is upended when the precarious financial situation of their home plantation eventually leads to its sale. From the New York Times review: "The Negroes are torn between their loyalty to their feudal lord, their love of the slow-going ways of life on the plantation, and the inducements held out to them by friends who have gone North to Harlem." The author is further described in the review (and wouldn't you know it?) as "a Southern woman whose personal affection for unlettered, plantation Negroes is as apparent as her intimate knowledge of them." .

Description
New York: Three Leaves Press, 2006. 1st Printing. Trade Paperback. Very Good. 6x1x9. 1st printing. Faint edge wear. 2006 Trade Paperback. 527 pp. No one predicted success for Henry Ward Beecher at his birth in 1813. The blithe, boisterous son of the last great Puritan minister, he seemed destined to be overshadowed by his brilliant siblings - especially his sister, Harriet Beecher Stowe, who penned the century's bestselling book Uncle Tom's Cabin. But when pushed into the ministry, the charismatic Beecher found international fame by shedding his father's Old Testament - style fire-and-brimstone theology and instead preaching a New Testament - based gospel of unconditional love and healing, becoming one of the founding fathers of modern American Christianity.
