Description
Three full-page woodcut illus. 81.5; 62; 81 folding leaves (pagination continuous). Three vols. Large 8vo, orig. semi-stiff patterned wrappers, orig. title slips on covers, orig. stitching. Osaka, Kyoto, & Tokyo: Kawachiya kihei 河內屋喜兵衛 et al., 1793. Second edition (1st ed.: 1787) of this collection of three medical works passed down in the Takeda family of physicians. The book is very rare; we find no copy in North America in WorldCat. The first of the three works, “Magical Method for Investigating the Pulse” 察脈神訣, is ascribed here to Liu Kai 劉開 of the Yuan era, with explanations attributed to Xiong Jun 熊均 of the Ming dynasty. “From the discussions of the many pulses by the former worthies, this book excerpted the four of the shallow, deep, slow, and numerous, and distinguished them clearly. The writing is simple and suitable for the beginner learner,” according to the Preface by Tachibana asomi Masatomi 橘朝臣正福, dated 1789. The second work, “Rules for Diagnostics Explained by the Ancients” 古訓診式, was compiled by Kōhō’s father, Takeda Kōdō 竹田公道 (d. 1751), supplemented by Kōhō. At the end of the text, there is appended a “Secret Method of the Hidden Pulse” 隱脈秘訣. This method had been acquired by Kōhō’s ancestor, who had “travelled west to the Ming and obtained it,” according to Tachibana’s Preface. Takeda Teizen 竹田定前, in his Preface, dated 1793, specifies that the ancestor was well versed in “yin-yang literature, and thus started to take an interest in the art of medicine. At this time, he worried that this country lacked good doctors, so he sailed out to sea and entered the Great Ming. He travelled to the home of the Daoist master Jinweng 金翁, who transmitted all of his craft. He then obtained his writings in a number of juan, and returned to our August Japan.” Tachibana continues by saying that the texts he was talking about were “kept secret among their papers for generations and were not disseminated into the world.” Yet Kōhō, whose “duty was to practice medicine in the realm, did not dare to keep this book to himself. He wanted to make it public to the world in order to aid the masses of the realm.” The third work, “Essentials for Examining the Stomach” 診腹精要, was written by Takeda Teikai 竹田定快, Kōhō’s great-grandfather. Teikai had read widely in the extant literature on examining the stomach, in which the process is described in detail. “The late master thought about it for a long time,” the 1793 Preface explains, “then, by chance, he acquired a small booklet of which he had not verified the author. He relied on this book, mined the ancient books, and searched the various theories, adding to it from his own experience. It can safely be said that the method of examining the stomach is most complete” in this work. Takeda Kōhō (d. 1794) and his father were both physicians in Edo. In addition to the aforementioned Prefaces, there is one by Kōhō, dated 1788. The first work has an additional Preface by Kōhō, dated 1787. The second one has a Preface dated 1790 and a colophon, likewise by Kōhō, dated 1787. The third work has a Preface by its author, dated 1626. Very fine set. The original title slips on the volumes have been misplaced, so that Vol. 3 is marked as Vol. 2 and vice versa.

Description
Color and black & white illus. throughout. [12] leaves. Small 4to, pictorial wrappers, staple-bound. Berlin: Berliner Künstlerprogramm, 1975. A rare Daniel Buren (b. 1938) exhibition catalogue. This show, supported by the Berliner Künstlerprogramm and Galerie Folker Skulima, was the first time Buren used sails as his canvas for works in situ. A regatta displaying the artist’s sails took place on Wannsee Lake outside of Berlin (20 September 1975). Thereafter, the sails were mounted on the walls of the Akademie der Künste (30 November-7 January 1976). This catalogue is thoroughly illustrated with photographs of the work, with text in parallel German, English, and French. The colophon makes clear that the texts, by Bernd Mahr and Horst Merten, “were written spontaneously by two people who are not art critics or anything of the kind, but who witnessed my work in Berlin.” The Note to the Reader declares: “All the photographs reproduced in this book are souvenirs, documents of a work. They cannot replace it. They only show how the work was carried out, and the reader is asked to remember that they can falsify it — photographs can reduce, detract, fragment, frame, flatten. Photographic reproduction of my work can only be imprecise. Finally, if there is such a thing as the ‘reality’ of photography, it is never the same as the ‘reality’ of the work photographed, and we are not concerned here with overcoming this gap.” A fine copy of a catalogue that is now rather scarce. Ownership stamps to inside of upper wrapper and title-page. ❧ Daniel Buren’s website, “Expositions.” Kunstmuseen Krefeld’s Künstler Bücher I exhib. cat. (1993), p. 46.

Description
Westminster: Archibald Constable and Co, 1911. First Thus. [The Memorial edition], limited to 1025 copies, this being copy 527, numbered and initialed (GMM) by Meredith. Thirty-six octavo volumes (8 1/2 x 5 5/8 inches; 216 x 142 mm.) occupying approximately 44 1/2 inches (113 cm.) of shelf space. Contemporary three-quarter crimson morocco over red cloth boards ruled in gilt by Birdsall of Northampton (stamp- signed). Spines decoratively gilt in compartments, top edge gilt, marbled endpapers. Original cloth covers preserved at end. The mildest of wear. Occasional mild, scattered foxing. Frontispiece to first volume. Armorial bookplate of Louise G. Emmet on front pastedowns. A handsome set. "Ah, Meredith! Who can define him? His style is chaos illumined by flashes of lightning" (Oscar Wilde). His signature is extremely rare; lightning strikes this initialed set. The present is considered the gold standard of Meredith's works, according to Encyclopedia Britannica, bringing together Meredith's best writing which was "characterized by a fascination with imagery and indirect references. He had a keen understanding of comedy and his Essay on Comedy (1877) is still quoted in most discussions of the history of comic theory. Some of his writings, including The Egoist, also highlight the subjection of women during the Victorian period. During most of his career, he had difficulty achieving popular success. His first big novel, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, was judged so shocking that Mudie's circulating library canceled an order of 300 copies. Ultimately, Meredith was richly honored: he succeeded Lord Tennyson as president of the Society of Authors, and in 1905 he was appointed to the Order of Merit by King Edward VII" (Britannica).

Description
Red Dragon Print Collective / Weather Underground, 1974. First Edition. Paperback. Good. First Edition. Paperback. 10.5" x 6.75". 154pp. Original red printed wrappers, tattered, chipped, and edgeworn, with the front cover half detached. Contents a bit grubby and soiled, with substantial and relevant annotations. Handwritten letter with fold creases and stains. An exceptional association copy of the foundational political statement of the Weather Underground, accompanied by a contemporary handwritten letter documenting the organization's clandestine distribution network in real time. The letter, a single sheet in ink signed "Barb & Jay," and dated July 27th, shortly after Prairie Fire was officially released in the summer of 1974. The writers describe a New York publication called the City Star receiving two boxes of Prairie Fire along with a letter from the Underground directing them to distribute copies to sympathetic organizations and groups - exactly the grassroots network the WU employed to disseminate the book outside commercial channels. The writers forward a copy to Bloomington, Indiana via visiting associates ("Mark & Susie"), providing a rare ground-level view of how the book moved from the underground into activist networks across the country. The copy itself bears extensive penciled and inked marginalia throughout, notable for their editorial rather than readerly character: recurring directives to "rework," "expand," and "add to" specific passages suggest the annotator may have been engaged in revision work toward a subsequent edition, though this cannot be confirmed. The Weather Underground did subsequently produce the journal Osawatomie (1975-76) as a continuation of Prairie Fire's political project. Together, the copy and letter constitute a primary source document of the Weather Underground's publishing and distribution strategy at a pivotal moment in the organization's history. Uncommon in any form; with this provenance, rare.

Description
New York: D.A.P., 2019. Hardcover. VG. Magenta boards with bronze metallic stamped lettering. Color-illustrated dust jacket with white lettering. 368 pp. Mainly color illustrations. From fantastical worlds to political topologies: a global survey of landscape painting in the 21st century. Although the fact may be surprising to some, landscape painting is positively thriving in the 21st century--indeed, the genre has arguably never felt as vital as it does today. The reasons why, if speculative, surely include our imminent environmental collapse and increasingly digitally mediated existence. Landscape Painting Now is the first book of its kind to take a global view of its subject, featuring more than eighty outstanding contemporary artists--both established and emerging--whose ages span seven decades and who hail from twenty-five different countries.Through its thematic organization into six chapters--Realism and Beyond, Post-Pop Landscapes, New Romanticism, Constructed Realities, Abstracted Topographies, and Complicated Vistas--the book affords a generous window into the very best of contemporary landscape painting, from Cecily Brown's sensual, fleshy landscapes to Peter Doig's magic realist renderings of Trinidad, Maureen Gallace's serene views of beach cottages and the foaming ocean, David Hockney's radiant capturings of seasonal change in the English countryside, Julie Mehretu's dynamically cartographic abstractions, Alexis Rockman's mural-sized, postapocalyptic dioramas, and far beyond.Landscape Painting Now features an extensive essay by Barry Schwabsky, art critic for The Nation. Schwabsky's text weaves throughout the book, tracing the history of landscape painting from its origins in Eastern and Western art, through its transformation in the 20th century, to its present flourishing. Shorter texts by art historians Robert R. Shane, Louise Sørensen, and Susan A. Van Scoy introduce each artist, situating the importance of landscape within their practice and addressing key works. With over 400 color reproductions, including many details, this ambitious survey makes a compelling case for the continued relevance of landscape painting in our time.-- Publisher description.

ISBN-13: 9781886363465; ISBN-10: 1886363463. Hardcover. New. $49.95 * Taylor wrote this important work in 1814 as a reply to John Adams's Defence of the Constitutions of Government of the United States of America. Unlike Adams, he rejects the concept of "a natural aristocracy" of "paper and patronage" and a federal government based on a system of debt and taxes. He considers the American government to be one of divided powers responsible to the sovereign people alone. Opposed to the extent of power awarded to the executive office, he calls for shorter terms for the president and all elected officers. Charles Beard said this work "deserves to rank among the two or three really historic contributions to political science which have been produced in the United States." Originally published in 1814, this is a reprint of the 1950 Yale University Press edition with an introduction by Roy Franklin Nichols. JOHN TAYLOR [1753-1824] was known as "John Taylor of Caroline County, Virginia." He served in the Continental Army and later in the Virginia House of Delegates, then served three terms as a member of the United States Senate. He is considered to be one of the greatest philosophers of agrarian liberalism and was one of the first proponents of states' rights. His works include New Views of the Constitution of the United States (1823), Construction Construed, and Constitutions Vindicated (1820) and A Defence of the Measures of the Administration of Thomas Jefferson, By Curtius (1804).
