Description
Hudson: A. Stoddard, 1797. Full Description: WASHINGTON, George. America's Lecacy [sic]: Being the Address of G. Washington, on his Declining a Re-election to the Presidency, to the People of the United States. Hudson: A. Stoddard, 1797. [Together with] Circular Letter from His Excellency George Washington, commander in chief of the armies of the United States of America, to the Governors of the several States. Hudson: A. Stoddard, 1797. [Which contains] Farewel Orders of General Washington, to the armies of the United States. Rocky Hill, Near Princeton, November 2, 1787 [and] The Answer To His Excellency George Washington, Commander in Chief of the Armies of the United States of America [West-Point, November 15, 1783]. The rare first edition of Stoddard's printing in book form of Washington's Farewell Address announcing that he would not seek a third term as president. Originally published in David C. Claypoole's Daily Advertiser on September 19, 1796. The speech is dated "17th Sept. 1796." Also the first printing of these two Washington addresses together. Four speeches in one twelvemo volume (5 x 3 1/8 inches; 127 x 80 mm). [1]-200, [2, blank] pp. Four works, but continuous pagination. With a half-title for America's Lecacy and separate title-pages for America's Lecacy and A Circular Letter. The Circular is Washington's famous official address resigning his command of the US army. The last separate copy of the "Circular Letter" at auction was in 1994. A copy of the 200 page edition was sold in 1937 and was called "very rare." Contemporary full sheep. Spine with original red morocco spine label, lettered in gilt. Top edge dyed brown. Spine with some chipping and flaking. Some repairs along outer hinges and spine. Internally very clean. Overall a very nice copy. Housed in a full red morocco clamshell. "In September 1796, worn out by burdens of the presidency and attacks of political foes, George Washington announced his decision not to seek a third term. With the assistance of Alexander Hamilton and James Madison, Washington composed in a "Farewell Address" his political testament to the nation. Designed to inspire and guide future generations, the address also set forth Washington's defense of his administration's record and embodied a classic statement of Federalist doctrine... Washington did not publicly deliver his Farewell Address. It first appeared on September 19, 1796, in the Philadelphia Daily American Advertiser and then in papers around the country." (United States Senate Historical Office). "Following the speech's initial publication in the American Daily Advertiser on September 19, 1796, regional printers rushed copies into print. Ashbel Stoddard (1763-1840) was one of these. In 1797, he published two issues of Washington's farewell address... [it] was assembled in such haste that Stoddard did not have the opportunity to correct the egregious misspelling on the title page ("Lecacy" for "Legacy")." (Bonhams). Howes W128. Sabin 101591. HBS 69096. $10,000.

Description
1897. Shortly after the discovery of America, the Spanish people became obsessed with the idea that somewhere in the interior of the New World there were rich mines of gold and silver, and various expeditions were sent out to search for these treasures. From 1540-42, Francisco Vasquez de Coronado led a well-equipped force of conquistadores north from Mexico in search of the supposedly fabulously wealthy Seven Cities of Cibola and the country of Quivira. The force included 230 horsemen, some with several horses, 62 soldiers on foot, 5 friars with their assistants, and a military guard, numbering altogether about 330. They had fifteen hundred horses, mules, and cattle, and these were likely the first of their breeds in the United States. With various parties heading far into the unknown northwestern and northeastern territory, they went throughout Arizona and reached as far as the Grand Canyon and the plains of Kansas. Although no riches were found, Coronado’s journey added greatly to the knowledge of the New World, by discovering the Zuni and Hopi Indians of the Southwest, the hunting tribes of the Great Plains, the teeming herds of bison, and the Grand Canyon of the Colorado River. With his dynamic representations of cowboys and soldiers, and bronco busters and Indians, painter, sculptor, author, and illustrator, Frederic Remington, created a mythic image of the American West that continues to inspire today. His technical ability to reproduce the physical beauty of the Western landscape made him a sought-after illustrator, but it was his insight into the heroic nature of Americans on the Frontier before it vanished into history that brought him lasting fame. His name remains identified with the American West.In 1897, Remington turned his attention to the subject of conquistadores, and drew the famous “Coronado's March” as a magazine illustration. This is a black and white print of the illustration, boldly signed by Remington at lower left. Signed prints of Remington’s works are very uncommon today.

Description
1776. BURN, Richard. The Justice of the Peace, and Parish Officer. London: Printed by W. Strahan and M. Woodfall… for T. Cadell, 1776. Four volumes. Octavo, contemporary full tan calf, raised bands, red morocco spine label. $2000.Later edition of this ""classic"" manual for Justices of the Peace, ""immediately recognized as authoritative,"" with an appendix concerning Justices of the Peace in Scotland.""Burn's publications reveal a man fascinated by the structures within which he lived and worked. His first book, The Justice of the Peace and Parish Officer… became a classic because it fulfilled the promise of its title. Before Burn, justices' manuals had arbitrarily subdivided the myriad matters with which justices dealt, and then simply listed the laws uniquely concerned with each arbitrarily defined topic. Burn instead constructed coherent categories for the discussion of the matters subject to the powers of justices and parish officers; and within each category he presented, in the order in which they arose in the performance of the justice's or officer's duty, the steps a justice or officer would take in dealing with each matter, and the law relevant to each step… The manual was immediately recognized as authoritative. Sir William Blackstone added a note to his Commentaries on the Laws of England declaring that Burn's Justice contained 'every thing relative to this subject, both in ancient and modern practice, collected with great care and accuracy, and disposed in a most clear and judicious method'"" (ODNB). ""The popularity and value of this treatise have been long and well known, and in England it is regarded as the most useful book ever published on the law relating to Justices of the Peace'' (Marvin). Stated ""Thirteenth Edition."" First published in 1755 in two octavo volumes; the 30th and last edition of The Justice was published in 1869. With two leaves of publisher's advertisements at rear of Volume III. Marvin, 163. Sweet & Maxwell, 2nd ed., I: 225-26. NYU, 198. Owner ink initials.Text generally clean; light wear and scuffing to boards, corners gently bumped. Very good in sound and attractive contemporary calf.

Story collected material from all available sources, and systematized it in a manner useful to all practitioners. "No work on international jurisprudence merited, nor received, greater praise from the jurists of Europe. It impressed English lawyers with the highest respect for the extensive learning of Mr. Justice Story.": Marvin, Legal Bibliography (1847) 670-671.
