Description
France: np, 1965. First edition. Very Good. Cecil Beaton. INSCRIBED BY PICASSO IN RED AND BLUE CRAYON TO THE PHOTOGRAPHER, CECIL BEATON: "pour Cecil Beaton. Ami Picasso 9.6.65.". Cecil Beaton (British, 1904 -1980) photographed virtually every prominent person in public life over the course of his career, which spanned more than half a century. Everyone from the Queen to the Rolling Stones sat before his lens. As an arbiter of glamor, the opportunity to sit for Beaton represented the pinnacle of success for many, but in some cases it was Beaton who pursued the sitter, and he had followed Pablo Picasso (Spanish, 1881 - 1973) long before they first met. As one of the foremost artists of the twentieth century, Picasso was sought after by many who wanted to rub elbows with success. He became one of those whom Beaton photographed several times over a period of many years, first at the rue de la Boetie in Paris in 1933, then at the rue Augustins in 1944, and finally at Mougin in the south of France in 1965. (Vickers). In addition to taking photographs, Beaton wrote about Picasso in his private diary, sketched his portrait, and after the 1965 sitting wrote a profile of Picasso for Vogue Magazine. Photographs from Picasso's home in the hills above Mougin reveal a close bond between the two men. Here they appear relaxed, comfortable with one another, and with a gleam in their eyes. By then Picasso was 84 years old and still painting late into the nights. Writing in Vogue, Beaton describes Picasso's energy as he gave Beaton a tour of the sprawling studio crowded with paintings, some still wet with paint and others from decades before. Beaton wrote of Picasso's welcome: "Pablo said 'It has been twenty years since I last saw you!' A golden Picasso threw open his arms. 'After so long we must embrace.'" The two then made much fun about the passage of years and how they had aged. (Beaton). A clear sign of affection, Picasso inscribed select prints and dedicated them to Beaton. Picasso writes in red and blue crayon on this print: pour Cecil Beaton. Ami Picasso 9.6.65. The print stands as testament to the kinship between the two artists. Provenance: With stamp "From the Beaton Studio / Sotheby Parke Bernet" on verso (sold, Sothebys Parke Bernet, 1978). Also with stamped notation "1/1" possibly indicating that this is a unique print. We have not been able to locate any others. Silver gelatin print. Signed, inscribed and dated by Pablo Picasso "pour Cecil Beaton / Ami / Picasso 9.6.65" in red and blue ink (recto). Image: 111⁄4 x 73⁄4 in. (28.5 x 19.6 cm.); sheet: 111⁄2 x 91⁄4 in. (29.2 x 23.4 cm.). Majestically framed to an overall size of 24 x 19.5 in. Small abrasion evident to the right of Beaton's left ear; otherwise fine. References: Vickers, Hugo, ed. Cecil Beaton: Portraits & Profiles. London: Frances Lincoln, 2017. P 152. Beaton, Cecil. Vienna: Julius Springer, 1935. First edition. Original printed wrappers. Very Good. FIRST EDITION OF POPPER'S LANDMARK IN THE PHILOSOPHY OF SCIENCE. A seminal work in the philosophy of science, Karl Popper's 1935 Logik der Forschung [Logic for Scientific Discovery] proposes the idea that scientific theories can never be verified, only falsified. Popper, in this his first monograph, critiques the inductivist view of scientific method in favour of his empirical falsification, and argues that scientific discovery is not a matter of induction or confirmation but rather a matter of conjecture and refutation. POPPER, KARL. Logik der Forschung zur Erkenntnistheorie der Modernen Naturwissenschaft. Vienna: Julius Springer, 1935. First edition, issued as volume 9 of Schriften zur Wissenschaftlich Weltauffassung. Octavo (5.5 x 8.5 in; 140 x 216 mm), vi, 248, [2, publisher advertisements] pp. Original printed wrappers. Wrappers slightly rubbed with some mild wear around edges, separation between some of the quires, but holding; a few light pencil marks. An excellent and very well-preserved copy of the rare first edition.

Description
6/5/04. Bliss accepted and led the highly successful campaign, TR’s only presidential run as a Republican This campaign led to the first calls for campaign finance reform, and this letter was cited in the investigation ""This rare document takes history inside one of TR’s most consequential political decisions in 1904: the selection of his campaign manager. It was a good one. TR won in a landslide: 336 to 140 in the electoral college and well over 2.5 million in the popular vote."" -Edward F. O'KeefeCornelius N. Bliss was a partner in one of the largest wholesale dry-goods firms in the country. Involved in politics, he knew fellow New Yorker Chester A. Arthur and served as chairman of the Republican committee in New York in 1887 and 1888, contributing much to the success of the Benjamin Harrison ticket in his state in the 1888 election. Presidents Arthur and Harrison both wanted to offer him cabinet posts, but he declined on the grounds that his wife was a semi-invalid and could not move from their New York home to Washington. He served as Treasurer of the Republican National Committee from 1892 to 1904, and became friendly with William McKinley in his early years in that office. In January 1896, McKinley asked Bliss to become Secretary of the Treasury in his incoming administration, but Bliss declined on the same grounds. He did work closely with the McKinley campaign, and with McKinley’s campaign manager Mark Hanna. From Hanna, Bliss learned much about running a national campaign, and how to get corporations to make major contributions. In the end McKinley just could not accept no for an answer, and as a result of his persistence Bliss accepted the post of Secretary of the Interior in McKinley’s Cabinet. Bliss’s daughter came to Washington to serve as his hostess in lieu of his wife. Then, in 1900, a result of the death of his vice president Garrett Hobart, McKinley needed a new vice presidential candidate for his reelection run. He offered the post to Bliss, who declined. So the party chose Theodore Roosevelt. TR never liked Hanna, the feeling was mutual, and in any event Hanna died before the 1904 campaign got into swing. So when it came time for Roosevelt to launch his 1904 presidential campaign, he immediately turned to Bliss. This is the original letter in which TR requested - actually cajoled - Bliss to accept the campaign manager post. We obtained it directly from the Bliss descendants, and it has never before been offered for sale.Typed letter signed, on White House letterhead, two pages, May 6, 1904, marked “Personal”, to Bliss, urging him to take the office and offering him pretty much carte blanche in the campaign if he would do so. “My Dear Mr. Bliss: I have just received your letter and read It to Cortelyou and Payne, both of whom will see you tomorrow or the next day. I also showed it to ex-Postmaster General Smith. Now, my dear Mr. Bliss, I most earnestly hope, for the sake of the party and the country—not to speak of my own sake—that you will make up your mind to the sacrifice and will accept. If you do not I am not sure that there is anyone who can with advantage take the place, and I am sure there is no one who can begin to fill It as you will. You were in McKinley's Cabinet: you were Hanna's right-hand man: you are known all over the country as a public servant of marked ability and the highest probity; you are known to the business world as a representative business man: you have the confidence of the people, as no one else whom we could choose for the place could have it. You will not only render a great service by your work in the campaign, but from your position you would become of right one of the trusted and intimate advisers in all matters before the administration for the next four years, if we were successful. This would mean that your influence would be exerted as it could be in no other way. If you do not take the position you will nevertheless work almost as hard during the campaign, but your work will then redound very much less to your credit, and very, very much less to my advantage. You will have an executive committee and an advisory committee practically of your own choice, a vice chairman of the East, a treasurer of your own choice, and a vice chairman of the West, who will deal with the West. Your chief care will be New York State, and in New York State Odell, as chairman of the State committee, will take an immense amount of the burden off your hands. Speaking quite truly, I believe the work will not be anything like the work of the ordinary chairman has of necessity been, and that it will not he a very serious drain upon you. I know that there will be a certain amount at wear and worry, and I appreciate fully how much I am asking of you: but I sincerely believe that the burden will not be overpowering, and I know that the service you can render will be literally inestimable. I appeal to you as strongly us I can to say ‘yes’. Very faithfully, yours. Theodore Roosevelt.”Roosevelt mentions three people in his letter. George Cortelyou was a trusted TR advisor. He served as the first Secretary of Commerce and Labor from February 18, 1903 to June 30, 1904. From 1904 through 1907, Cortelyou also served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee, working for TR’s successful re-election. He would serve as Postmaster General from March 6, 1905 to January 14, 1907 and was then TR’s Secretary of the Treasury. Henry C. Payne was a member of the Republican National Committee between 1880 until his death in late 1904, becoming vice chairman and, ultimately, chairman of the Republican Party. In that post, Payne was instrumental in convincing Theodore Roosevelt to run alongside William McKinley in the presidential election of 1900. Later, President Roosevelt would name Payne, his benefactor and friend, postmaster general in 1901. Charles E. Smith, the former Postmaster General, was a national figure who had drafted the Republican Party platform in 1896.Of this letter, Edward F. O’Keefe, CEO of the Theodore Roosevelt Presidential Library Foundation, wrote: ""'The one great ambition of Theodore Roosevelt’s was to be chosen President on his own merits by the people of the United States,' wrote Theodore’s younger sister, Conie. In her always wise words, Theodore loathed the idea of coming to power 'through a dead man’s shoes' upon the assassination of William McKinley. 1904 was Theodore’s chance to win the election outright. In The Loves of Theodore Roosevelt, I reveal how uncertain he was of his chances. 'Whether I shall be re-elected I haven’t the slightest idea,' he wrote Conie. To his older sister and essential confidante Bamie, TR also wrote: 'On election night Edith intends to have members of the Cabinet around. And we intend to have a little feast which can be turned into a festival of rejoicing or into a wake, as circumstances warrant!' This rare document takes history inside one of TR’s most consequential political decisions in 1904: the selection of his campaign manager. It was a good one. TR won in a landslide: 336 to 140 in the electoral college and well over 2.5 million in the popular vote.""It is interesting to note that the issue of campaign financing first seriously arose in the campaign of 1904. The methods employed by Bliss and the Republican managers were less systematic (and less productive) than those developed by Hanna. Corporations still contributed, but there was no methodical or massive assessment of business as Hanna had made. But late in the campaign, Democratic nominee Alton Parker charged that Roosevelt, though responsible for enforcing the antitrust laws, had improperly accepted large campaign gifts from big corporations. In a speech at Madison Square Garden, Parker attacked the political corruption arising from the acceptance of such gifts, and called for clean elections. Four days before the election, Roosevelt angrily denied the charge, denouncing Parker's statements as ""unqualifiedly and atrociously false.”In 1906 the New York Legislature Insurance Investigation Committee, known as the “Armstrong Committee”, took testimony on claimed abuses, and issued a report critical of the industry and highlighting a number of questionable practices. The presidents of the three largest insurance companies resigned and some of their corporate officers were indicted for grand larceny. Since the companies had made political contributions, the report also recommended a prohibition on such corporate contributions. It was an admitted fact that corporations gave money to candidates, and that President Roosevelt had been the beneficiary of a good deal of it. Relying on the Armstrong Committee report, the Democratic press revived Parker’s charges of the campaign of 1904 - that TR accepting such funds was corrupt, or at least could lead to corruption. In October 1912, a few weeks before the presidential election in which TR ran as a Progressive, a special Senate investigating committee headed by Moses E. Clapp, a Republican from Minnesota, held hearings on the matter. Nothing substantial was found, but press attention to the issue was not helpful to Roosevelt’s campaign. The Clapp Committee made specific note of this very letter and took testimony relating to it. Charles H. Duell, assistant treasurer of the Republican National Committee, testified before the committee that Bliss told him that in the sound money campaign in 1896 every bank and trust company in New York City but one, and most of the insurance companies, made contributions to the Republican National Committee; that in 1900 few of them did and that in 1904 still less. Nevertheless, some 73 per cent of the total Republican campaign fund in 1904 came from corporations, according to the testimony before the same committee by George R. Sheldon, treasurer of the Republican National Committee in 1908.It is entirely legitimate, President Roosevelt wrote to George B. Cortelyou, to accept contributions, no matter how large they are, from individuals and corporations with the explicit understanding that they are given and received with no thought of any more obligation on the part of the National Committee or of the National Administration than is implied in the statement that every man shall receive a square deal. “We cannot under any circumstances afford to take a contribution which can be even improperly construed as putting us under an improper obligation”. Roosevelt therefore instructed Cortelyou to return a check for $100,000 to the Tobacco Trust, which was about to undergo prosecution as an illegal combination, and a check for the same amount to the Standard Oil.Whatever the truth of the stories circulated in 1904, and whatever the inspiration for the Parker charges, the outcry of the Democratic candidate in that year initiated the movement which later culminated in the adoption of the first federal corrupt practices act - prohibiting contributions by corporations and banks to national party campaign funds.

N.P., 1960. Very good. One commercial scrapbook, brown cloth over boards, measuring 12½” x 11¼”, and over 100 loose leaves with a total of 274 pages and 434 pieces of comic book clippings pasted down and 15 pieces of original art laid in. Generally very good or better. This is a monumental collection of clipped strips, scenes and characters from the popular Katy Keene comic, complete with several pieces of original fan art. The character of Katy Keene was created by Bill Woggon for Wilbur Comics #5 (part of the Archie Comics series) in 1945. Marketed as “America's Queen of Pin-Ups and Fashions,” Katy was a fashion designer, model and actress, driven by career ambitions and not, like other female characters, solely by romance. Readers were encouraged to submit their own designs for Katy's outfits; Woggon would draw them in and give full credit to the fan, printing their name, age, hometown, and sometimes a bio or photo as well. After several appearances in Archie books, Katy got her own title in 1949, with various spinoffs until 1961. She was revived by a fan in 1979, and officially by Archie Comics from 1983 to 1994. Katy Keene was given life again in 2020 as part of the New Riverdale comics line – this time on a television show. The series focused on Katy's female friendships (over romance, once again) as well as issues of gender in the workplace. A TIME magazine review noted it was “Less about finding Prince Charming than it is about making your artistic dreams come true.” These albums are stuffed with comic clippings, ranging from one- to two-inch characters or outfits to full-page scenes, and a few portions of comic books intact. We see “Katy Keene in Sea to Outer Space” with “rocket fashions, etc.” by 15-year-old Bonnie Turner of Buffalo, New York, as well as on the set of “Katy's Dream Movie” and “a true story at Woggon Wheels Ranch.” Other characters appear, like cowboy “Curly Cassidy,” Katy's beaus “K.O.” and “Randy,” her little Sis,” best friend “Lucki Lorelei” and professional rival “Gloria.” Designs for her clothes and cars were devised by her fans, as were storylines and poems; Marilyn, 13, of Illinois wrote: “Katy is the Queen of Beauty / K.O. and Randy thinks she's a cutie . . . Lucki Red and Gloria, the / Rest in a Row / But Katy, wonderful, is the Star of this Show!” One reader sent ideas for her own wedding dress, seen modeled by her idol. Other clippings reveal “Katy's Mad Hatter Jokes,” “Honeymoon Homes,” fairy tale stories and “Fashions of the Ages.” Woggon printed “Dance Pin-Ups for your album and pin-up collection” as well as “Katy's Pin-Up Board” featuring photographic head shots of 38 young fans. Over a dozen pieces of our compiler's original art and sketches are laid in. A fantastic collection of comic book clips, with a focus on fashion, ambition and the welcomed creativity of readers.

New York or Boston presumed: Amory, Browne & Co., Boston and New York, 1924. First Edition. Paper. Stapled. Near Fine. Charming company product promotion that seeks to get at the buyer, the parent, by hooking the child through a ersatz children's book. An example of a not insignificant genre of commercial publication, with here, at least, the product being pushed is one that is meant for children -- crib blankets, and a Nashua Storyland Blanket meant for young children. But also being pitched are blankets and throws for anyone. Published by Amory, Browne & Co., a fabric company which was making the Nashua blankets being promoted here. Printer unknown. Oblong, 7.5 by 11.5 cm. Unpaginated, 24 pages, including covers. Color printed illustration on every page, and sometimes two small color vignette illustrations, with the only larger, or full page illustration, on the front cover, and two other pages blank but for the small color illustration (inside front cover, a few leaves and the sun, and the rear cover, of a cat balanced on a bar). 23 short poems, mostly four line, generally adaptations of Mother Goose nursery rhymes, modified to plug or minimally reference the Nashua company, but one four liner is a prefatory poem setting up what is to come, and a few are not Mother Goose but based on fairy tales such as Cinderella. The last five pages speak more directly about the company's products, with color vignettes of different patterned blankets. The illustrations redound with charm. Especially appealing is the cover showing a doll in bed with the Storyland Blanket, which is a blue blanket repeating the internal vignettes but on the blanket the illustrations are all rendered in simply white -- a sort of reverse silhouette. All the verse pages excepting the first have a greenish background color. Scarce -- no copies listed on OCLC. Condition: a tack hole, or slight roughness, upper left front cover. Flattened tiny dog ear, front cover. Minor soiling front and rear. Small abrasion area on rear cover. Generally clean. Easily Very Good, and in our view, Near Fine.

Baldwinsville, New York: The Brown Newspapers, 1990. Trade Paperback. Near Fine. 5x1x8. Signed by author. Signed by Marylee Armour on title page without inscription. Front cover corner lightly creased. 1990 Trade Paperback. xx, 322 pp. "In 1902, at the age of six weeks, Don Burnap arrived at Fourth Lake in a packbasket. His parents, and brothers and sisters, began to carve a homestead from the wilderness surrounding the Fulton Chain of Lake, in the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. This is the story of how a family of seven lived in a camp by the shore, between woods and waters. They provided most of their own food, kept a horse and cow or two, and lived what seems to us now, a quiet and isolated life. Yet, with the nearby railroad, and the lake traffic, there was always something interesting happening. Here are stories of the community schoolhouse, the camp-building, the train wrecks, and the tragic accident which claimed Burnap's father's life. And this is the story of how the homestead evolved, and eventually became a popular resort, with multiple cottages and staff. For forty-seven years, Don Burnap was the Captain of the Fulton Chain mailboat, a unique dock-to-dock postal service. His recollections of camps, grande dame hotels, and native Adirondackers are all recorded in these pages.
