Description
New York: Irving Berlin, 1911. A Composer's Archive: Irving Berlin's Personal Songbook Presented to Leslie Bricusse, with 1969 Letter Referencing Roger Eden BERLIN, Irving. Songs by Irving Berlin. New York: Irving Berlin, n.d. Thick folio (12 x 9 inches; 305 x 229 mm.). A remarkable compilation of nearly 200 individual musical scores, gathered and bound into a substantial volume. Specially prepared in black cloth, covers and spine lettered in gilt, all edges gilt, housed in a protective clear jacket. An imposing and evidently custom-assembled anthology of Berlin's principal songs. Binding strong and handsome; inscription bold; letter well-preserved with original folds. A superb, museum-worthy ensemble. Provenance & Association: Inscribed by Berlin to Leslie Bricusse: "For Leslie Bricusse / with all good wishes / from / Irving Berlin." Accompanied by an exceptional typed letter signed (TLS) on Berlin's stationery, dated March 28, 1969, addressed to Bricusse at his Beverly Hills residence. In it, Berlin explains his decision to send this bound volume rather than individual songs, and adds a warm compliment on Bricusse's score for Goodbye, Mr. Chips. Crucially, Berlin notes that he had earlier sent a copy of the same book to Roger L. Eden of Broadcast Music, Inc. - a revealing detail that firmly establishes the present volume as a purpose-assembled professional reference copy, circulated among leading figures in the music world. The association places this example within a rarefied network of composer-to-composer and composer-to-publisher exchange. Contents & Dating: The volume comprises a sweeping retrospective of Berlin's career, from early Tin Pan Alley successes (Alexander's Ragtime Band, 1911) through his great Broadway and Hollywood years, including later works such as There's No Business Like Show Business (1946) and You're Just in Love (1950), establishing a terminus post quem of 1950 for the compilation. It represents, in effect, a working archive of Berlin's canon, assembled late in his career. Significance: A powerful artifact of 20th-century musical history: Berlin - the defining architect of the American Songbook - here acknowledges and encourages Bricusse, one of its most accomplished successors. Association copies linking composers of this stature, with substantive correspondence referencing both the object itself and contemporary work, are of the highest desirability. The reference to Roger Eden further elevates the piece, situating it within the inner professional circles of music publishing and rights management.

Description
1860. Being to his publisher Leon Escudier, and relating to another publisher, Giulio Ricordi, it thus encompasses the two men who did the most to popularize Verdi’s musicIn 1839, at age 26, Verdi completed his first opera, Oberto, with the help of fellow musician Giulio Ricordi; the opera's debut production was held at La Scala, the opera house in Milan. Over several decades following this, Verdi produced many of the greatest operas ever composed among them are La Traviata and Aida, as well as songs that have entered popular culture, such as Donna e Mobile.Ricordi helped popularize Verdi's music, and became the publisher of his later operas.  He had an eye for talent, also working with Giacomo Puccini, to whom he became a father figure.  Casa Ricordi remains a publishing house more than 150 years later.Leon Escudier was a French journalist, music critic and music publisher. In 1837, he founded the weekly La France Musicale, as well as a music publishing company. This company would become a platform for the distribution of Verdi's works, particularly in France, where Escudier had rights of publication.Together, Ricordi and Escudier were the primary agents for promoting Verdi and publishing his work throughout Europe, together establishing Verdi's reputation across Europe as the leading composer of opera, a reputation that persists today. Ricordi had rights in Britain and the Netherlands, where Escudier typically published in Italy, Germany and Austria, with the two sharing Spain and Portugal. Such an arrangement worked for decades.Although reposing confidence in Ricordi and Escudier, Verdi himself managed the distribution of the rights to his works, and did so with great aplomb, assuring that his two agents worked together and that the works were disseminated throughout Europe.Autograph letter signed, in Italian, no date, to Leon Escudier, relating to an agreement to transfer the rights to one of his works to both Escudier and Ricordi. ""The conditions [of the agreement] given to me must be expressed differently.  In the third paragraph, you say, 'M. Leon Escudier cedes to M. Ricordi and...'  Cede is not the appropriate word, as until that moment, I am the only owner. Affectionately, G. Verdi.""This is an unpublished letter, and we are grateful to the Archives at La Scala and National Institute of Verdi Studies for their assistance.  Scholars at the latter believe this note is written to Escudier and that the date is likely in 1860s or 1870s.It is remarkable to see Verdi asserting his rights to an opera, even as he transfers it to both Escudier and Ricordi, connecting these three central musical figures.

Description
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1858. First edition. First issue, in the original thirteen monthly parts, March 1857-April 1858. Publisher's original red-brown pictorial wrappers. A lovely, rather astonishing set with minimal wear, confined to spine extremes and small closed tear to fore-edge of Part I. Plates clean and bright. Octavo (8 3/4 x 5 5/8 in; 223 x 144 mm) Collating. ix, [2], 412, with thirteen hand-colored engraved plates (including frontispiece) and sixty-nine wood-engravings in text, all by John Leech. Set collates per Mellon/Podeschi and Schwerdt. First issue wrapper to Part I per Wolff (with back cover ad titled "Mappin's Shilling Razor"). No Advertiser is called for in Parts XI and XII. Chemised and housed in a red cloth clamshell case with black leather spine label lettered in gilt. A Fine set. One of the great pleasures of Ask Mamma is the interpretation of its events by the artist John Leech. He was introduced to Surtees by William Thackeray, a great friend and admirer of Surtees' work. The first novel Leech illustrated for Surtees was Mr Sponge's Sporting Tour. Surtees had originally asked Thackeray to illustrate this work, but Thackeray declined on the grounds that he could not draw horses; instead, he recommended Leech, being "of a sporting turn" and who "to my mind draws a horse excellently." Leech illustrated all of Surtees' subsequent works and the two men became friends. The illustrations follow the text closely, a result of close collaboration between the artist and writer. Although Leech was responsible for numerous book illustrations, and is lauded as the chief cartoonist of Punch, some of his best work is to be found in the pages of Surtees' novels. Description
1970. 17 lines handwritten by Mal Evans in ink, titled “Sunrise” the song would later be called “All Things Must Pass” the title song of George Harrison’s first solo album from 1970. “George Harrison” written in ink at the bottom right. An early working draft, close but unlikely a final draft based on the below differences. Ex Christie’s South Kensington 28/Aug/1987. These lyrics were copied by Evans from an earlier messy draft written by Harrison. Throughout his time as assitstant to the Beatle’s and later, Evans would make these handwritten copies for the purpose of cleaner working drafts and copies for recording sessions. Beautiful custom morocco and handmade paper chemise and slipcase style box. Some short tears to the edges, minor soiling and toning, else near fine. Fourth line “that grey” was changed to “this grey” First line of the last verse “a nighttime” has been conflated with published lyrics to “the nighttime”, though it sounds like it could be either. “but” removed from the 4th line of the first 2 verses for the recorded version “no” removed from the 4th line of the last verse for the recorded version Perhaps the greatest solo album of any of the former Beatles, “All Things Must Pass” was a triple album of wonderful songs composed during an inspired artistic period when Harrison was only “allowed” two songs per Beatles album. This song—about the Beatles break up—was ultimately chosen as the title track of the album. Mal Evans was the personal assistant and road manager for the Beatles from 1963-1970 and continued his friendship with the individual members until his death in 1976.

Cleveland, Ohio: Privately Printed, 1905. 16mo. (15.5 x 10.5 cm.), 24 pages. Illustrated. All edges gilt. FIRST & ONLY EDITION, limited, number 363 of 400 copies hand-numbered copies. A commemorative book for the Silver Anniversary Banquet of the Civil Engineers' Club of Cleveland, held at The Colonial on March 13, 1905. The fare included Canape a la Russe, Blue Points, Clear Green Turtle, Broiled Shad, Broiled Spring Chicken, Bermuda Potatoes, and several desserts. Portraits of eminent club members and a history of the organization. Notable for the original dust jacket printed on thin silver paper, containing a printed menu for the banquet. We imagine the banquet book was prepared long before the event's menu was available, and so it was added as a dust jacket; a most unusual adaptation. Some light soiling to the boards, otherwise fine. Printed silver dust jacket with edges chipped. Near very good. [OCLC locates seven copies, though we cannot establish whether any of these have their dust jackets].

CAPTAIN THOMAS BROWN (1785 –1862) was born in Perth, Scotland, and educated at the Royal High School, Edinburgh. When he was twenty, he joined the Forfar and Kincardine Militia, rising to the rank of captain in 1811. When he was quartered in Manchester, he became interested in nature, and edited Oliver Goldsmith's Animated Nature. After his regiment was disbanded he bought the Fifeshire flax mill. That, however, burned down before Brown had the opportunity to insure it. He then started to write books about nature for a living. He was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 1818, one of his proposers being James Jardine. In 1840 he became curator of the Manchester Museum, where he served for twenty-two years. He wrote several natural history books, including the one offered here. He became a fellow of the Linnean Society, a member of the Wernerian, Kirwanian and Phrenological Societies, and president of the Physical Society.

Garden City, NY: Doubleday & Co., Inc., 1966. First edition (stated). 1966 ILLUSTRATED LAY GUIDE TO GENETICS BY NOBEL LAUREATE GENETICIST GEORGE BEADLE AND HIS WIFE MURIEL BEADLE--SIGNED BY BOTH.9 1/2 inches tall hardcover, green cloth binding, gray cloth spine, inscribed on half-title page: "Sincerely,/ George Beadle/ Muriel Beadle," x, [4], 242 pp, many illustrations in text, a few marginal pencil notes, very good in very good minus jacket with darkened edges, in Brodart protective cover. LAID IN: Newspaper review of the book by Noman Ross. GEORGE WELLS BEADLE (1903 – 1989) was an American geneticist. In 1958 he shared one-half of the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine with Edward Tatum for their discovery of the role of genes in regulating biochemical events within cells. He also served as the 7th President of the University of Chicago. Beadle and Tatum's key experiments involved exposing the bread mold Neurospora crassa to x-rays, causing mutations. In a series of experiments, they showed that these mutations caused changes in specific enzymes involved in metabolic pathways. These experiments led them to propose a direct link between genes and enzymatic reactions, known as the One gene-one enzyme hypothesis. MURIEL BEADLE (1915-1994) received a bachelor's degree Phi Beta Kappa from Pomona College. In the late 1930s, she worked as an advertising copywriter for Carson Pirie Scott & Co. From 1948 to 1958, she was a feature writer, fashion editor and woman's editor for the Los Angeles Mirror-News. She and her husband, a geneticist, co-wrote the 1966 book "The Language of Life" (offered here). In it, according to Tribune staff writer Ronald Kotulak, the two "surmounted the scholarly language barrier that has been the downfall of other authors. Each scientific word and concept has been pounded down into everyday language." Her other books were "These Ruins Are Inhabited," a study of life at Oxford University, where her husband won the Nobel Prize; "The Fortnightly of Chicago: The City and Its Women 1873-1973;" and "The Cat: History, Biology and Behavior."

Fine in Near Fine dj
Description
Atlanta: Turner Publishing, Inc.. Fine in Near Fine dj. (c.1994). First Edition. Hardcover. [nice clean as-new copy, with no discernible wear to book; the jacket shows faint handling wear only, looks terrific inside new mylar]. (B&W and color photos and other illustrations) "A portrait of each winning cartoon includes a plot summary, the production history, and a critical analysis that explores the unique qualities that have earned the cartoon a place in film history." (The analysis/commentary is provided by such luminaries of animation history as Leonard Maltin, Joe Adamson, Charles Solomon, and John Canemaker.) It should be noted that "cartoons" is defined here as short (not feature-length) films, so you won't be finding the likes of BAMBI or YELLOW SUBMARINE here; just as well, though, as any such "50 Greatest" selection of any sort of film is fraught enough with difficult choices. I have to say, though, I don't find too much here to quibble with; as editor Beck states in his introductory note, the survey of animation professionals (many of whom are ASIFA members) resulted in "an extraordinarily well-rounded collection of classic animation. While it is full of popular Disney, MGM, and Warner Bros. films, it also includes cartoons by Walter Lantz, the Fleischer Studios, UPA, and the National Film Board of Canada, as well as pioneering efforts like Gertie the Dinosaur and the work of contemporary artists." ****NOTE that additional postage charges will be assessed for international shipping of this moderately heavy oversize book; if this concerns you, please contact us for a shipping quote before placing your order. As always at ReadInk, domestic Media Mail shipping is free.**** .
