Description
Ten vols. 8vo, orig. printed wrappers, orig. stitching. [China]: Jing hua yin shu ju 京華印書局, 1924. First edition of this history of the Tangut kingdom. The Tanguts, known as the Xia or Western Xia in Chinese, ruled a powerful state on the northwestern periphery of the Chinese world from the 11th to the 13th century. As Zhao Erxun 趙爾巽 (1844-1927) wrote in his Preface to our book, “even though the Xia occupied a peripheral territory, they relied on their military power to withstand the Song, Liao, and Jin for over two hundred years.” The Tanguts had a complete set of political institutions, but regrettably lacked a national history, Zhao wrote. “Attempts to synthesize a history of the Hsia [Xia] from all surviving Chinese sources” began in the 18th century; our book represents the culmination of that process. “The most recent attempt at this type of traditional historical synthesis was the Hsi Hsia chi [Xi Xia ji]…Unlike his predecessors, the author of this carefully compiled work identifies his sources and lists the works he consulted” (Twitchett & Franke, “Bibliographical Essays,” 675). After the fall of the Qing dynasty, Dai Xizhang (1868-1933), worked on the historiographical commission, led by former Qing official Zhao Erxun, that was to write a history of the Qing empire. While working on the project, Dai met Wang Shunan 王樹枏 (1852-1936) and Ke Shaomin 柯劭忞 (1850-1933), who like Zhao wrote Prefaces for our book. The book furthermore contains Prefaces by professor, museum director, and bibliographer Hu Yujin 胡玉縉 (1859-1940) and scholar Wang Bing’en 王秉恩 (1845-1928). Several of the Prefaces point out that Dai worked for a full ten years on his history of the Western Xia. Fine set, preserved in a hantao. References Twitchett, Denis & Herbert Franke. “Bibliographical Essays.” In The Cambridge History of China, Vol. 6: Alien Regimes and Border States, 665-726. Edited by Denis Twitchett & Herbert Franke. Cambridge University Press, 1994.

Description
Charleston, S.C.: Carolina Rice Kitchen Association; Presses The Lucas-Richardson Co, 1901. Booklet, stapled in wrappers (lacking) (18.5 x 11.5 cm.), 91, [13] pages. Advertisements. ~ Evident FIRST EDITION. Margaret Cook records this as the first South Carolina community cookbook. At least two other non-community cookbooks from the Palmetto State precede this book by some decades: The Carolina Receipt Book by a “Lady of Charleston” (1832) and Sarah Rutledge’s Carolina Housewife (1847). A third book, clearly a community cookbook, Old Receipts from Old St. Johns, compiled by the Pinopolis Civic League emerged circa 1900 but remains undated (and unrecorded by Cook), and thus the priority of these books is unclear. However, we do know that in 1901, Mrs. Samuel Stoney compiled The Carolina Rice Cook Book by gathering recipes from around the region. Karen Hess writes of the book (in her seminal work on the subject, The Carolina Rice Kitchen: The African Connection), “This charming booklet, containing some 237 receipts for rice, was compiled in 1901 by Louisa Cheves Smythe Stoney, wife of Captain Samuel... Stoney, a figure in his own right but most pertinently chairman of the Carolina Rice Kitchen Association, seated in Charleston... the work was ‘offered at the South Carolina Interstate and West Indian Exposition as a 25-cent souvenir,’ adding that ‘the exposition was a sort of world’s fair meant to inject some spark in the moribund Carolina economy.’... But we still have Carolina Rice Cook Book, which has become exceedingly rare... Mrs. Stoney also included receipts obtained from the interested ladies of Low Country society, including some of the proudest names of the old rice aristocracy and their cooks, to be sure, although they are seldom credited and if they are, then by their old slave names. In short, it is a period piece, but this is what is important about the book. That is, it reflects one aspect of the period, the unique rice kitchen of Low Country Carolina, the glory of which was also beginning to fade as the old African-American cooks departed from the scene, one after the other.” Numerous advertisements in rear for South Carolina rice brands, dealers, and other local businesses. ~ There are two variants of book’s wrapper design: this one, with a sheaf of rice and the cover title Carolina Rice Cook Book; and another, with an image of a pot hanging in the fire, and the alternate cover title, The Old Carolina Rice Pot. Both indicate “Price 25 Cents” at the foot of the front panel. This copy lacks the front panel of the wrapper. Title and several other leaves with corner missing. Good only. Very rare. [OCLC locates eleven copies of this first printing, and one copy at NYPL indicated as 1902; Brown 4151; Cook, page 241, not in Cagle].

Description
New York: AMNH, 1932. FIRST EDITION. I: With frontispiece, 10 plates, including a folding colored map of the Congo, and 208 figures; II: With colored frontispiece, 21 plates (2 in color) and 38 figures; III: With 14 plates and 36 figures; IV: With 27 plates and 46 figures. Original brown cloth with gilt lettering on spine; a very clean copy from the Library of James M. Dolan Jr., with his small blind stamp on title and with a hand-colored bookplate on the paste-down of Volumes I and II of a bird with the motto “vi et industrai.”. First edition of Chapin’s monumental work, published in four volumes over a period of 21 years. This complete account of the faunal study of this region includes a discussion of the author’s ornithological exploration of the Belgian Congo, topography and geology, climate, faunal relations and subdivisions, botanical remarks, and more specific information on the birds, including their geographical distribution and variation, breeding, and evolution. The author arrived in the Belgian (now officially named the Democratic Republic of the) Congo in 1909 as an assistant to the American Museum of Natural History Congo Expedition. He stayed for more than five years, collecting over six thousand bird specimens and cataloguing about one-eighth of the known species in the world. Because he worked on his own, the book is written in the first person, giving it an immediacy and readability that many ornithological studies lack. This is a superb set of a scarce and definitive study (only 300 copies of the first volume were printed). For this work the author was awarded the Daniel Giraud Elliot Medal from the National Academy of Sciences in 1932. Chapin (1889-1964) was one of the highest regarded ornithologists of his time. He received a doctorate from Columbia University in 1919, and then began a long career at the American Museum of Natural History. Chapin served as the 17th president of The Explorers Club from 1949 to 1950.

Description
Eight letters, 13 pages, letters are written in Italian, in both ink and pencil, some folding, staining, and dust soiling, else in good readable condition. There are no retained mailing envelopes, so determining where Pasini's family lived in Italy will require further research. Pasini lived in various obscure towns in the far west, many were former mining communities, some are currently ghost towns, or are essentially so. In 1892 Pasini wrote his brother from Markleeville, Alpine County, California. He wrote his nephews circa 190 from Glendale, Montana, currently a ghost town. In 1910 he wrote to his nephews and sister from two locations in Idaho, Black Bear, currently a ghost town, and Wallace, Shoshone County, Idaho. The years 1915-1919 found Pasini, in Nevada, in Luning, Mineral County, a virtual ghost town today, and Yerington, located in Lyon County. Pasini's letters are short and in which he often sends money home.

Collector's Edition Keepsake for volume 3 of the Kingdom of the West series, 'Scoundrel's Tale: The Samuel Brannan Papers.' The Kingdom in the West Series, subtitled 'The Mormons and the American Frontier', is an award-winning series begun in 1997 that explored the story of the Latter-day Saints and their part in the greater history of the Western Frontier. The history of the Mormons in the American West is so sweeping it is easy to ignore episodes that, for one reason or another, found no place in the traditional annals of the region. This series explored the story of the Mormon people and their part in the greater history of the Western Frontier. Primary source documents, many of them previously unpublished, comprise this series' core Will Bagley (1950-2021) wrote and edited more than twenty books on overland emigration, frontier violence, railroads, mining, and the Mormons. He lectured widely and had appeared in more than a dozen films, including the American Experience episode of the 'The Mormons' on PBS. He was one of the finest historians of the postwar period and a legend.
