672 letters, 695 pages, mainly typescript, 5 telegrams, one small quarto notebook, circa 1914, 117 manuscript pages, 19 pages of typescript and manuscript notes, approximately 39 bills, receipts, invoices, and other ephemeral items. There is some damp staining and wear to letters in the earlier years, but the collection is in good legible condition. The collection consists of incoming correspondence and retained carbon copies of outgoing correspondence pertaining to McMahon's writing career during the years 1914-1928. McMahon was a prolific writer for periodicals, particularly those of the Curtis Publishing Company, and others including Country Life. McMahon wrote many articles on gardening, agriculture, and suburban architecture for The Country Gentleman, a magazine published by the Curtis Company. McMahon published a book on the topic in 1917. McMahon was also involved in promoting the work of the National War Garden Commission, during World War 1, which promoted war gardens and food conservation. The letters discuss the articles, including travel arrangements to Europe, Canada, the South, including Texas, Florida, and Louisiana, for research on articles on agriculture and labor in those places. McMahon wrote anti-immigration articles, as well as articles against Jazz Music, Flappers and the "loose morals" of the "Jazz Age", for the Curtis Company. He also wrote articles featuring Thomas A. Edison and Herbert Hoover during this period. There are also letters concerning payment, royalties, and the concerns of his editors. The collection also includes numerous rejection letters for a proposed novel, titled Edward Wayne, and other projects. John R. McMahon, author, of Little Falls, Passaic County, New Jersey, was born September 1, 1875, in British India, his parents, Rev. John Todd McMahon and Sarah (Douglas), were missionaries. McMahon was mostly self-taught, he married Margherita Arlina Hamm (died 1907); the couple had one daughter, Arlina Douglas, known on stage and in radio as Eileen Douglas, she died 1939. He next married Beatrice Lessey, a 1905 Stanford graduate, on June 17, 1913, she died in 1942. McMahon began his career as a reporter and Sunday article writer for New York newspapers from 1894; began writing fiction for magazines in 1910; contributor Saturday Evening Post and other publications. He traveled Europe widely after World War I, the USSR in 1933. McMahon served in the Spanish-American War as a Private, Co. D, 202nd Regiment, New York, for nine months, including three months in Cuba. McMahon was a member of the Authors' League of America. He was the author of: Toilers and Idlers, 1907; The House that Junk Built, 1915; Success in the Suburbs, 1917; Your House, 1927; The Wright Brothers – Fathers of Flight, 1930. Editor and part author of How These Farmers Succeeded, 1919, as well as numerous articles in other publications of the Curtis Publishing Company, including The Ladies Home Journal and The Country Gentleman, amongst those of other publishers.

Often seen as Greene's great post-war work, The Quiet American follows Thomas Fowler's relationship with idealistic American CIA agent Alden Pyle, one which intrudes on both professional and personal ground. The work drew on Greene's experience as a war correspondent in French Indo-China for The Times and Le Figaro from 1951 to 1954, and the work is dedicated to two friends he made while there (one of which is named after the leading female character). It has since been adapted into two films, one in 1958 and another in 2002 starring Michael Caine and Brendan Fraser. Fine in Fine dust jacket.

PRACTICE ALBUM FOR MIDDLE SCHOOL, Volume Seven, Part One. Containing 5 sheets of color woodcut reproducing watercolor sketches from part one of volume seven and one odd sheet from part two is laid in. By Asai Chu^ and meant to serve as a guide for middle school students in their drawing classes. The Japanese Education Ministry, the Monbusho^, had commissioned Asai Chu^, one of the foremost artists and educators of the day to create a series of such handbooks for schools. This brief notice is not the place to expand but it should be noted that this series represents an important milestone in the see-saw cultural battle being waged between artistic traditionalists and "modern" Western-style artists. The fact that the Asai Chu^ strove to familiarize students with the use of Western watercolor rather than the traditional brush is significant in that context. Asai, himself, actually, though an accomplished Western-style oil painter who had studied in France was also a skilled traditional painter and a top-rank graphic designer, as well. It appears he believed in giving students all the tools, all the media, available for their expression. His textbook series are rightly famous though almost never found, being fragile to begin with and meant to be used by students. This volume is in very good condition - the pages are loose. It should also be noted that Yoshikawa Ko^bunkan was a famous house, capable of great skill in woodblock printing projects. Complete in aof itself as a peret of the series and including an extra plate.

Talbot, a speculator and land agent based in Sioux City, Iowa. "Having but recently made a visit to the state, and with the aid of good, reliable men residing in Texas, we can inform you as near as any one can do that which you may expect to find upon a personal investigation...differing from other portions of the South, [Texas] is blessed with healthful, temperate climate, having a population composed in part of enterprising settlers from all portions of the Northern states. Texas, unlike the old Southern states, is progressive, and is rapidly taking her place among the more advanced states of the Union." The verso offers to make advances on veteran homestead claims, paying cash for claims. Talbot was a land speculator who moved to Sioux City in 1870, where he invested heavily in the area and surrounds, though he lost his fortune in the Panic of 1893. With bookplate of Louis H. Roddis to front pastedown and ink ownership inscription to front free endpaper. Folding plate with hand-colored image of foxglove after half title. Shelved in Room G. William Withering (1741-1799), English botanist, chemist, and physician, was the first to conduct systematic experiments on the effects of foxglove (Digitalis) on the human heart. The resulting work, 'An Account of the Foxglove and Some of Its Medical Uses,' is a foundational work of pharmacology. This copy is from the collection of Naval Captain Louis H. Roddis Sr. (1888-1969), a medical doctor who authored several articles, including one on William Withering and the medicinal use of digitalis. 1383322. Special Collections.
