Description
[Paris]: Typ. Schneider, Rue d'Erfurth, 1, 1849. Very good.. Broadside, approximately 18 x 13 inches. Matted and framed. A pair of short closed tears, repaired, at lower edge. Even toning and light creasing. Contemporary manuscript annotation under caption title. A wonderful, illustrated faux news broadside published in Paris as gold fever coursed through Europe in 1849. The headline promises "nouveaux détails" of the gold mines in California, but the text is in fact a humorous description and light-hearted admonishment of the multitudes thoughtlessly giving up their livelihoods for the hardscrabble life of a gold digger in the California wilderness. The first section runs through a litany of types who are abandoning their lives for adventure and advises them not to consider the difficulties of the journey: "En route pour les mines d'or de la Californie! Partez! Partez!" The remainder of the text somewhat sardonically describes life in California, and warns prospective travelers not long for the comforts of home, but rather to concentrate on their sought-after riches: "Par example, ne vous attendez pas à jouir de toutes les douceurs de la vie... Vous n'y trouverez ni biftecks au beurre d'anchois, ni dinde truffées; car les aliments y sont rares... Mais les racines y sont en grande abondance... Vous vivrez un peu à la manière des anachorètes pour un temps... seulement, vous déterrerez de l'or... ce qu'ils ne faisaient pas, que l'on sache..." The illustration, which occupies approximately the top third of the broadside, depicts men and women from all walks of life carrying pickaxes on their shoulders and racing for a ship about to depart. The image carries the printed signature of "B. Netter;" a contemporary manuscript note under the caption identifies the publication date as February 17, 1849. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France estimates that as many as 40,000 French men and women made their way to California between 1848 and 1856. The present broadside is an excellent document of California gold fever in France and the pervasive interest in gold rush news in Europe during the mid-19th century. Rare, we locate just four copies, at Berkeley, UCSD, California Historical Society, and the BNF.

Description
Paris / New York: Goupil & Co., Jean Boussoud, Manzi, Joyant & Co., Successor, 1900. Limited Edition. Leather. Near Fine. Lawrence, Thomas. Number 66 of 200 copies, elephant folio size, 191 pp. Limited edition of 200 copies, this no. 66, specially bound in full leather by Bickers & Son, London. Sir Thomas Lawrence (1769-1830) remains one of the most renowned portrait painters of the Regency period. A child prodigy, at the age of 10 he was supporting his family with his portraits. He received his first royal commission, a portrait of Queen Charlotte, in 1790 (at the age of 21) and remained the most sought-after portrait painter in Britain for the next forty years. In a recent (2010) retrospective exhibit of Lawrence's work, it was said of him that "he [was] one of the great painters of the last 250 years and one of the great stars of portraiture on a European stage". This superb volume presents 65 of Lawrence's portraits done in Aquatint photogravure, with two of them hand-coloured, with a life of the artist and a catalogue of his work. ___DESCRIPTION: Custom bound by Bickers & Son, London in full green morocco, both the front and back boards have a decorative ruled border in gilt, raised bands on the spine, gilt lettering and decorations on the spine, top edge gilt, sewn headbands in cranberry, blue and ivory, inner gilt dentelles, marbled endpapers in shades of olive green, grey and ivory, limitation statement on the verso of the half-title page, this copy no. LXVI of CC, tissue-guarded hand-coloured frontispiece of Emily, Countess of Glengall, title page in brown and black with publisher's device in the center, many initial capital letters set in a decorative square using brown ink, Preface and life of Lawrence by Lord Ronald Sutherland Gower, Trustee of the National Portrait Gallery, photogravures bound in throughout the text with almost all of them being presented both in sepia and grey tones, all with lettered tissue guards, original ribbon marker still present, Table of Contents at the end followed by the List of Illustrations; large folio in size (approximately 15.25" tall), pagination: (i-iii) includes the half-title, limitation and title pages, blank (iv), (i)- iv includes the Preface, 1-97 includes the life of Lawrence, 98 is blank, (99)-176 being the Catalogue, (177)-181 the Table of Contents and List of Illustrations, blank (182), Printer's Statement (183) stating the text and plates were printed near Paris in 1899 - note that pagination excludes the plates. ___CONDITION: Volume is overall in near fine condition, with a strong, square text block, solid hinges, straight corners with a minimum of rubbing, the interior is clean and bright, and it is entirely free of prior owner markings. Due to the book's weight the front joint is just beginning to crack, but the thickness of the boards means it is on the outer surface only and the board is firmly attached, as is the rear board; there is one scrape to the leather on the front board and extremely minor overall edgewear; the spine has sunned to a brownish-green. Internally there is some offset darkening to the free endpapers from the gilt inner dentelles and the book has a very faint musty odor. ___POSTAGE: Please note that due to the size and weight of this work additional postage will apply; we are happy to ship at cost to both domestic and international addresses, please contact us for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
London: John Stagg, 1737. Hardcover. Fair. Full contemporary calf binding with five raised bands on spine, gilt border to boards, title page printed in red & blank ink. Third edition. With the ownership signature of Charles Thomson, who was Secretary of the Continental Congress. Previous owner has written in pencil that it was from his library, and there is an old newspaper clipping about collectible signatures laid in. Old ink price of 8/6 to front endpaper. Spine ends chipped, front hinge tender, ffep detached. Thompson's signature is clear & sharp. Thomson was the only signer other than Hancock for the first printing of the Declaration of Independence. This book was published when he was 8 years old, and the autograph looks fairly adult; it's possible the 8/6 is the price he paid for the book. No markings to text; soil from use.

Description
San Diego, 1966. Good.. 16pp. Oblong quarto. Original pictorial self wrappers, stapled. Printed entirely in blue ink. Some staining and wrinkling to covers, waterstain and minor chipping at bottom of gutter throughout, occasionally affecting a few words. A seemingly unrecorded and ephemeral souvenir program published to coincide with the dedication ceremonies for the Refuge Church of God of the Apostolic Faith in San Diego, California. The work contains a biography of the pastor, Bishop John Harry Cannon, along with portraits of him and his large family, as well as a couple dozen photographs of fellow parishioners and the church itself. The final six pages of the work are comprised of advertisements for local businesses, including gas stations, auto shops, a record store, laundry services, markets, and more. The proposed date for the program comes from an ad for Ed Taylor Chevrolet who offers a 1966 Impala for the low, low price of $2566. We could locate no copies of this informative program from an African-American church in San Diego in OCLC or elsewhere.

1867. CORPORATION OF LONDON. Proceedings in reference to the preservation of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground. Printed by order of the Corporation of London. [4], 88 pp. 8vo, red publisher's binding with gilt insignia and lettering on front outside cover. London: Benjamin Pardon, 1867. This collection of proceedings by the Bunhill Fields Preservation Committee documents the Corporation of London's efforts to ensure the safety of the Bunhill Fields Burial Ground, as the Corporation's lease was nearing its end (Christmas, 1867). Bunhill had been a burying ground of Nonconformists and other denominations since the sixteenth century. With the work of the committee, the Corporation obtained an Act of Parliament in 1867 preserving the burial ground as an open landscaped space with seating, gardens and the restoration of some of it most noteworthy monuments, including John Bunyan, Daniel Defoe and William Blake. The appendix contains a reprint of a rare tract from 1717, "Inscription on the Tombs in the Dissenters' Burial Place, near Bunhill Fields." Some wear to edges of binding, else fine.
