Overall, very good.
Description
[Various locations including Baltimore, Texas, Arizona, Mexico, and Peru, 1980. Overall, very good.. Approximately 5,000 photographs, of which perhaps a third are duplicative. Mostly loose black and white photographs, many 8 x 10 inches or larger. Additionally, thousands of stock certificates for ASARCO companies, several official typescript works and documents, and a handful of ephemera and other manuscript materials. Altogether, approximately 7.5 linear feet. Condition generally strong, with images clean and sharp, though some chipping and wear to scrapbooks and earlier photos. Massive photographic archive documenting mining activities of the American Smelting and Refining Company (ASARCO). Originally organized in 1899, ASARCO consolidated numerous mining and smelting operations at its inception and added to its operations over time. It is still in business today, though the company was acquired by Grupo Mexico in 1999 and declared bankruptcy in 2005. Today it operates only two smelters in the United States and is responsible for over twenty superfund sites. The images present here show operations at numerous plants across both North and South America. These include Baltimore and Tacoma; various locations in Texas, Arizona, California, and New Mexico; smelters in Idaho, Colorado, and Montana; plants in Illinois, Nebraska, Missouri and several other eastern locations; and numerous mines in Peru and Mexico. Images generally depict the exterior and surrounding areas near the smelter and mine, as well as workers preparing ore and various metal products. Often these can be found in sequence, providing a detailed and step-by-step picture of the processes involved. Most appear to be professional and likely promotional photographs commissioned by the company -- some are noted as being for the newsletter, some for specific magazines or other publications. A substantial number of images in the archive have a photographer's stamp on the verso, and these include such notable firms as Manley Commercial Photography of Tucson, Arizona; Cal-Pictures of San Francisco; Fluor Utah, Inc. in San Mateo; and Tom Upper of Tacoma, Washington. The bulk of the images date from the 1950s through the 1970s. A substantial portion of the archive focuses on ASARCO plants in the American West. There are significant caches of photos from Texas (ca. 300), Arizona (ca. 200), Tacoma (ca. 300), and Montana (ca. 200). There are about a hundred photos each from California, Idaho, and Colorado. Images from San Francisco show the operation and later demolition of the smokestack at the Selby smelter; the plant there closed in 1970. The earliest images are from ASARCO operations at the copper refinery and mill in Baltimore, dating to 1916 and continuing through the 1950s. Photographs of Baltimore are the most numerous of any single smelting operation, numbering more than 700, together with other documentation. Interestingly, the early photos include several panoramic views of the plant and operations there, comprised of two or more individual photographs combined. Operations continued in Baltimore until the 1970s. The next largest group of images is from Peru. The Toquepala mine and Ilo smelter were opened by the Southern Peru Copper Corporation in 1960, and the images here depict the establishment of operations at those locations. Many of the photos in Peru depict miners down in the mines, as well as their ASARCO housing villages, humanizing the industrial documentation. Throughout the archive, miners can be seen at various phases of work, across time and cultures. In addition to hundreds if not thousands of stock certificates, other printed and manuscript documentation herein includes a typed history of the Tacoma plant from 1890 to 1980 (38pp.); a typed appraisal of the Federated Metals Division in St. Louis dated 1938 (143pp.); and an ASARCO laboratory manual, dated 1971 -- housed in a very large and official three-ring binder, this item details laboratory safety, analytical methods, and information on thirty-two individual minerals ranging from arsenic to chromium to molybdenum to zinc. There are also numerous pamphlets on safety regulations from individual plants, as well as some union information and other related material. Altogether, this archive represents a significant photographic record of one of America's largest mining conglomerates, spanning the better part of a century. Despite having been produced by a variety of commercial agencies, there is a general consistency to the prints that one does not always see in such archives. Furthermore, many of the images in the collection have a strong artistic quality, as well, such as the abstracted overhead views of the mines, which are quite striking and unusual.  Undeniably useful for students of industrial history, mining history, and photographic documentation. More information regarding the individual breakdown of regional photographs is available upon request.

Description
Edinburgh: W. H. Lizars, [1845-46]. Second Edition. 165 x 108 mm. (6 1/2 x 4 1/4"). 40 volumes.. QUITE ATTRACTIVE CONTEMPORARY HALF MOROCCO, HANDSOMELY GILT, THE VOLUMES BOUND IN FOUR DIFFERENT COLORS TO REFLECT THE VARIOUS MEMBERS OF THE ANIMAL KINGDOM (the 14 volumes on birds bound in red with buckram boards, the 13 volumes on mammals in dark green with watered silk boards, the seven volumes on insects in dark blue with buckram boards, and the six volumes on fish in deep purple with watered silk boards), all the volumes with gilt-decorated raised bands, spines uniformly gilt in compartments with lozenge centerpiece composed of drawer handle stamps and enclosing a small flower, the whole surrounded by triangular scrolling cornerpieces; endpapers not uniform--by design: the mammals, fish, and insects with tartan endpapers, the birds with an unusual maze-like design; all edges marbled. WITH A TOTAL OF 1,360 ZOOLOGICAL PLATES, INCLUDING 1,280 PLATES OF VARIOUS ANIMALS, ALL BUT A FEW HAND COLORED, along with 40 engraved frontispiece portraits of noted zoologists and 40 (mostly uncolored) engraved title pages, all but a very few of the engravings with original tissue guards. (One fish engraving mentioned in the list of plates, but apparently not issued, since no text relating to it appears.) Front pastedowns with armorial bookplate of Edward Salvin Bowlby. Nissen 4708; Wood, pp. 405-06; Zimmer, p. 326. Just the most minor rubbing to leather extremities, slight chafing or soiling here and there to cloth boards, trivial imperfections internally, but AN EXTRAORDINARILY APPEALING SET IN VERY FINE CONDITION, the bindings especially bright, almost without wear, and most pleasing on the shelf, and the text remarkably smooth, clean, and fresh, with virtually no signs of use. This famous collection of writings on natural history and on naturalists, augmented by more than 1,300 (mostly colored) engravings, was issued in individual volumes from 1833-43; the present set is a very early reprint of the completed 40-volume work. The book's general editor, Jardine (1800-74), also wrote about a third of the volumes, mostly on birds and fish. Wood says that it is "a remarkable little library of early nineteenth-century zoology, as well as a brief account of the lives of the chief zoologists of all time." The plates here feature figures of animals that are fully colored against an uncolored background, an arrangement that makes the species under discussion stand out as more clearly delineated. Complete sets with all of the plates, like this one, are not so readily available as in the past. And because the attractive engravings have meant that the work has frequently been the victim of affectionate destruction, sets that are both clean internally and in contemporary bindings in excellent condition are especially rare. This is all the more true in the case of sets bound in attractive leather. The present copy is extraordinary because it still opens stiffly, indicating that it has experienced very little use, and because it is bound so distinctively: we have never seen this work--or any multi-volume work like it, for that matter--bound in such a way as to reflect its various sections of content with varying colors of leather. Our set comes from the library of Victorian gentleman Edward Salvin Bowlby (1830-1902), a barrister who served as High Sheriff of Hertfordshire..

Description
Hartford, Conn: Press of the Case, Lockwood & Brainard Company, 1881 First edition of this rare work by Julia Evelina Smith (1792-1886), a suffragist and the first woman to publish her own complete translation of the Bible. Julia's sister, the suffragist Abby Hadassah Smith (1797-1879), was the original collector of the poems, which were written by their mother Hannah Hadassah Smith (1767–1850). Some of the poems collected here were written by Hannah in Italian and translated by Julia. Publisher's purple cloth lettered in gilt (cover title: Mother's Poems). Some rubbing to spine and a bit of soiling to cloth. Green endpapers. Twelvemo. Front free endpaper coming loose. Contemporary pencil signature on preliminary blank and a second pencil signature on front free endpaper of "Pamela Hale," possibly the Washington State businesswoman and educator Pamela Case Hale (1834-1915). A bit of foxing and some light toning to pages, but overall a very good, clean, and tight copy of a rare book edited by the first woman to completely translate the Bible into English. In 1876, Julia and Abby Smith independently funded the publication of their edition of the Bible, which Julia had translated over the course of eight years with a particular attention toward literalism. The edition was significant in part because it was one of the most easily accessible contemporary Bible translations in English until the publication of the British Revised Version in 1881; it now remains a milestone in women's history.

Description
Advance Reader's Edition; A Near Fine book in wraps. An exceptional copy of this advance edition of the 3rd Harry Potter novel; uncommon in this condition. This advance copy was printed in a reported approximate 3000 copies, without the Mary Grandpre illustrated covers as in the first two advance copies; because of the immense popularity of the first two books, the publisher moved up the publication date by a year and had to settle for the simple diamond shaped pattern for this edition. This edition underscores the mania associated with the Harry Potter books at the time, with the statements about rushing publication and the need to read the book immediately along with the publication info to the back cover. This copy is in near fine condition with clean white pages and a square tight binding, showing some mild spotting to the front cover, light rubbing to the wrapper edges, and faint soiling to the exterior text block; an excellent copy. A welcome addition to any Harry Potter collection! Not remaindered, not ex-library; in a protective Mylar bag will ship carefully wrapped in a sturdy box.

London: William Heinemann, 1913. First trade edition. Collating 43, [1]. Publisher's gray-green cloth, front cover and spine pictorially stamped and lettered in gilt, top edge stained gray. Very slight discoloration on free end-papers from paste-downs. Ink name partially erased from the bookplate design on front paste-down, otherwise a very Fine copy in the original brown paper dust jacket printed in black (with the first issue price of "15/ - Net" on spine). A few small and neat repairs to extremities of dust jacket. Forty-four color plates (including frontispiece) mounted on tan paper, with descriptive tissue guards, and ten drawings in black and white. Rackham's Book of Pictures is a collection of illustrations that fully encapsulates the artist's classic style: From goblins and fairies to mystical atmospheric landscapes, there's an image to suit everyone's tastes in this survey. The introduction by Arthur Quiller-Couch set's out the books contents-not a biography but a celebration of Rackham's artistry. Rackham initially approached J. M. Barrie to write the introduction, but dude to scheduling conflicts Barrie turned down the offer and Arthur Quiller-Couch was found as a replacement. Not only did he admire "Rackham's work; he also thoroughly understood a child's instinctive longing for the imaginative and fanciful. 'To this instant, constant, intellectual need of childhood no one in our day,' he wrote, 'has ministered so bountifully or so whole-heartedly as Mr. Rackham.' And Quiller-Couch was happy, too, in associating the random, impressionistic nature of much of the Book of Pictures with 'the wayward visions that tease every true artist's mind, while he bends over the day's work'" (Hudson). Arthur Rackham (1867-1939) is perhaps the most acclaimed and influential illustrators of the Golden Age of Illustration. A prolific artist even from his youth, Rackham got his start as an illustrator working for the Westminster Budget Newspaper (1892). Over the next few years, he took on more and more commissions for children's books, hitting his career high in the first three decades of the twentieth century. Rackham turned his imaginative pen to every classic-from Shakespeare to Dickens to Poe. Latimore and Haskell 41-42. Riall 118.

A documentary short film made for the U.S. Navy and shown by All-American News, a company producing newsreels and later feature films for the race film market. The film was inspired by the success of the film The Negro Soldier, and was one of only five films documenting the war-time activities of African Americans in a positive light before 1950. Released after the surrender of Japan, the film highlights the service of African American seamen. (Richards 851; Wikipedia) Extremely scarce, in fact the only paper I have ever seen for this film.

Front hinge partly split, but sound
Description
N.p., 1668. Front hinge partly split, but sound. 12mo (130 x 74 mm). Engraved title. [24], 360 pages. Contemporary vellum. FIRST EDITION IN FRENCH of the famous and influential treatise, Browne's 'Relgio medici,' and the only edition in French until the 20th century. "By turns credulous and skeptical, Sir Thomas Browne is one of the most unusual of the great writers of the seventeenth century... The combination of detachment from the world with fascination with its smallest objects, the style, and the mind which both style and contents reveal, has absorbed the interest of readers of all kinds ever since its first appearance" (Printing and the Mind of Man). The work first appeared in two unauthorized editions in English in 1642. The present edition was translated from Dutch of 1665: "sometimes attributed to Nicolas Le Févre. According to Willems [no. 1784] printed by Blaeu in Amsterdam. La Haye has also been suggested as a place of imprint" (Krivatsky 1852). Keynes 71.

Description
New York: Jordan Schnitzer Family Foundation, 2005. First edition. Generally a clean copy; dust jacket with some minor rubbing and wear. 12.25 x 10.25 inches. 432 pages. Profusely illustrated in color. Original cloth; pictortial dust jacket. "In addition to his achievements in abstract painting and sculpture, Frank Stella has also made major contributions to the history of the modern print. An exploration of the artist's innovative use of the medium, Frank Stella: Prints reveals the intimate relationships between Stella's prints and his works in other mediums, demonstrating how Stella blasted a hole in the traditional tools and aesthetics of printmaking with works of compelling complexity and beauty. Frank Stella: Prints registers in chronological sequence more than 300 editioned prints, reproduced in full color, including works in series and portfolios. Related works in other mediums--paintings, metal reliefs, maquettes and sculpture--are also illustrated for comparison. Complete documentation of each print offers a privileged insight into the creative process behind these works of art. An introductory essay, prefaces to each series and comments on individual prints provide background information, analysis and interpretation. Frank Stella: Prints also features an illustrated chronology, a glossary tailored to Stella's practice, a bibliography and an index. Soon after arriving in New York in the late 1950s, Frank Stella (born 1936) came to prominence with his striped Black Paintings and shaped canvases. His early painting project reduced the medium to its most fundamental elements and introduced a key concept of Minimalism at an early date: 'What you see is what you see.' But it was not long before Stella, a restlessly experimental worker, abandoned austerity for brighter colors, irregular shapes, rougher textures and gestural brushstrokes" (the publisher).

Description
London: J. Bailey, 116 Chancery Lane, [1820]. First Edition. Slim Twelvemo. 18cm. Late 19th century half mottled calf over marbled paper covered boards by Bayntun of Bath, with a red title label to the spine titled in gilt, very much in the style of an older binding. 24pp. [with 24pp binder's blanks to rear, to stabilize the binding]. Light scuffing to corners and spine ends, darkening to spine label and a little dulling of the gilt, strong, tight, and handsome; internally clean, all edges gilt, marbled endpapers, later ex libris to front pastedown with traces showing removal of an older one visible beneath, hand colored frontispiece illustration with later tissue guard and a small archival tissue repair to a small tear on the fore-edge, offsetting of the color, and some light soiling to title page (the work would originally have been issued as a chapbook in paper wraps). A very good, attractive copy of an obscure piece of early 19th century pop culture. John Bailey was one of those highly-energetic, and slightly scurrilous printer-publishers of the early 1800's, running alongside Stockdale, Dugdale, Duncombe and the like in a frenetic race to recognise the current zeitgeist and mine it for pamphlets, chapbooks and on occasional multi-volume exposés until the vein ran out and they moved on to the next thing. It could be the sporting Fancy, the murky doings of the Ton, memoirs of ladies of negotiable virtue, the scandalous habits of the French, or the diabolical behavior of home grown rakes; if it could be illustrated with a lurid cut and sold to popular acclaim, but no legal outcry, then it was prime for publication. This is an indicative offering; a tale of a lady maligned, a wandering-handed husband, and some untrustworthy foreign types (Italians in this case, portrayed as being of a nation of bandits), promoting the popular and rather thrilling idea that nobody really knows what the aristocracy gets up to, but slim little volumes like this can give you a fair idea. Unusually studded with relatively competent verse commentary, and enough arch detail for the suggestive reader to wonder whether it is entirely fictional. It isn't, in case you were wondering; it forms part of the Caroline Scandal blizzard of pamphlets and cartoons directed at the indiscretions and marital strife of Caroline of Brunswick, the oft estranged wife of King George IV. George despised his wife, even after the birth of their daughter, and Queen Caroline retired to Italy where her chief advisor and confidante was a gentleman named Bartolomeo Pergami - in short order Caroline and Pergami were rumored to be lovers, accusations of adultery and possible treason flew in all directions, and a legal deadlock began with both parties, George and Caroline (whose middle name was of course, Amelia) denying infidelity whilst pointing the finger at each other. The "Green Ridicule" is a reference to the bags presented at the reading of the bill intended to grant the King a divorce; large green sacks of "evidence" collected by the Milanese authorities, much of which was rather hilarious and involved a lot of innkeepers and coachmen testifying to having seen Pergami in flagrante whilst within 20 feet of the noble lady. The resulting legal wrangling and backstabbing had the opposite effect from the one desired by George, and rendered Caroline something of a public and political heroine, misused by her abusive husband and adopted by reformist political figures seeking to gain ground on an increasingly eccentric and damaging monarchy. The tone of the tale is therefore rather sympathetic to Lady Amelia, in keeping with public sentiment. It is also stated to hopefully be the first part of a series of exposures of the travails of "Lady Amelia", and her somewhat ungallant spouse which suggests it was rushed out mid-trial and may have had subsequent installments as the proceedings continued through 1820. The title itself is possibly a riff on Mary Charlton's work; she published a substantial and popular work with a similar title a few years earlier. Scarce, and a little obscure, with three holdings in US institutions.
