Description
Paris, 1781. FIRST EDITION. 9 folding engraved plates (7 in contemporary hand color). Contemporary mottled calf, spine and label gilt, red edges, green silk marker. An excellent copy. First edition of this astronomical and geographical manual for children. Divided into two parts, the first opens with a mathematical guide for calculating sizes and distances in space, then focuses on universal astronomy, including celestial bodies, planetary movements, phenomena, and their atmospheric effects. It concludes with a discussion of astronomic understanding in different civilizations and cultures. The second part of the book comprises world geography continent by continent, with information about governments, regions, history, people, and laws. The chapter on America describes the 13 original states, Louisiana territory, Mexico, and Canada, accompanied by a map that denotes their boundaries. The author includes narratives of the explorers who “discovered” various lands, such as Ponce de Leon, William Penn, James Cook, John Byron, and others. The first two plates show astronomical distances and calculations, and the rest are maps. Edme Mentelle (1730-1815) was a French geographer and teacher to the royal household. He wrote this book for the education of the royal children, but later published several additional geography textbooks for general use. Cioranescu 44344.

Description
Versailles: Klefer, 1840. Folding engraved plate and 2 folding letterpress plates, letterpress tables in the text. Unopened in original printed blue wrappers. Slight wear to the extremities of the wrappers, otherwise excellent. First edition of this groundbreaking plan for an overhaul of the French penal system. Here Vingtrinier, a prison physician in Rouen, details his ideas for making prisons humane, hygienic, and efficacious in order to produce reformed society members and reduce criminal recidivism. His plans include apprenticeships through patronage for prisoners, a comprehensive healthcare program, and separation of prisoners based on age, health, mental capacity, and severity of crimes. He frequently references prison codes in other cities and countries and their effectiveness and describes how penal systems changed over time. He vehemently opposes agricultural penal colonies in favor of teaching prisoners trade skills. Vingtrinier’s work helped to expose the cruelty and filth of French prisons in the early 19th century, and as a result encouraged the largest reform of a penal system to date. Brunet VI: 4096.

Description
Paris: C. Reinwald, 1903. FIRST EDITION. An amazing copy in the original printed wrappers, uncut, with the author’s presentation inscription on the half-title to the French artist Louis Prat. First edition. “The present work is one of his valuable studies on children's intelligence which played a role in his development of an intelligence test. Binet investigated the mental characteristics of his two daughters by analyzing their solutions to simple problems. He described his observations and experiments which ultimately led him to conclude that it was not possible to use tests of sensory-motor abilities to measure intelligence. The work was an excellent systematic study of the differences between two individuals” (Heirs). Binet (1857-1911), a French psychologist, created the first practical intelligence test for children. It was based on studies and discussions revolving around children with learning disabilities, and whether they should be educated in separate schools or with all other non-disabled children. DSB II 132; Heirs of Hippocrates 2190.
