Description
Hamburg: Gustav W. Seitz, 1859. Near fine.. First edition of this beautiful shape book, detailing the seasonal activities of the Santa Claus-like KING WINTER and his assistant Jack Frost - in notably sharp condition. KING WINTER's job is distinctly Santa Claus-like: he inquires about the behavior of children, trims Christmas trees, and delivers gifts, all while wearing a red and white ensemble. Meanwhile, his unnamed wife and his servant Jack Frost go about the actual duties of winter, dusting the world with snow and creating frozen lakes. Indeed, it is Jack frost with his "stiff as a crutch" white beard who lends his shape to this book - the author was clearly aware of who was truly bringing winter to the land. This edition is nearly identical to Louis Prang's shape book of the same name. Prang made waves in 1863 with his publication of the "first mass-produced book to deviate from a rectilinear format" in the US, but the Library of Congress holds a Seitz copy of KING WINTER that is dated 1859 (PUBLIC DOMAIN REVIEW). It is unclear which publisher was copying which; either way, Seitz editions are scarcer on the market than those by Prang. 6.75'' x 2.75''. Original shaped color pictorial wrappers. Illustrated with chromolithographs. [8] shaped leaves. Wrapper with mild edgewear; spine with thin, careful repair. Leaves with occasional scattered foxing. Sharp and bright.

Description
Boston: John and Thomas Fleet, 1800. FIRST EDITION. Wrappers with title label on front; uncut, interior excellent with an inscription of D. Greenleaf on the half-title. First edition of one of Reverend Thacher’s sermons delivered in Boston. Thacher (1756–1812) was a prominent preacher in Massachusetts, and many of his sermons were printed during his career. This sermon begins with a verse from Luke Ch. 12 and proceeds to discuss the themes of philanthropy and charity. The sermon fits with the mission of the audience. A group of Bostonians established the Humane Society in 1786 in order to find ways to prevent water-related deaths such as shipwrecks and drownings, an unfortunately common occurrence. They are largely responsible for introducing life-saving methods including lifeboats and rescue techniques to Massachusetts Bay. Thacher’s message of helping others would have resonated with the Humane Society in attendance, and offers additional insight into this fascinating group of people. OCLC locates 2 real copies (NY Historical Society, Indiana); Evans, 38620; see.

Description
San Francisco: Arion Press, 2913. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. Number 84 of 400 numbered copies signed by the photographer, Lucy Gray. There were also 26 lettered copies for complimentary distribution. The author of this pivotal work died at the age of 37 along with his wife in a car crash in 1940, a year after this book was published. It took years for the book to become recognized as an American classic and for critics to agree now that it is the best novel ever written about Hollywood. In his introduction, the film critic and historian David Thomson discusses the novel and its relationship to Hollywood and the movies in the Golden Age of the late thirties and its importance to American fiction. The twenty photographs were taken by Lucy Gray, an award winning photographer and film maker. She and David Thomson, writer of the introduction, are married. The book was designed and produced by the Press under the direction of Andrew Hoyem. It is bound in a chartreuse cloth with green titling to the spine, and the word "Locust" on the cover with what appear to be a swarm of locusts. It is letterpress printed in Monotype Bodoni Book type on Italian Mouldmade Magnani Velata paper, lighter for the text and heavier for the photographs that are tipped into die-stamped recesses. The photographs are done in the manner of stills as if taken at night. They were printed in duotone over a metallic silver ground, overlaid with varnish. Housed in a green paper covered slipcase, edged in the chartreuse cloth. Accompanied by two copies of the prospectus, one of which has a slip stating that it is a revised prospectus. The first prospectus has a sample photograph from the book. In fine condition. Measures 7 x 9.75 inches. 180 numbered pages plus twenty unnumbered pages for the photographs.
