Description
New York: Dutton Children's Books, 1997. Hardcover. Near Fine. Hardcover. Stated first edition on copyright page. However, the number line does not start with "1" and the Caldecott medal sticker is affixed to the dust jacket, so this is likely a later printing as the Caldecott medal is awarded at the beginning of the year following the publication of the book. This copy is warmly inscribed by Zelinsky to a reader "who loves romance and fairy tales - with pleasure" followed by his signature. The jacket describes the book as drawing on elements from early French and Italian sources as well as from the Grimms. In this book the esteemed and much awarded illustrator Zelinsky selected a setting drawn from the formal beauty of Italian Renaissance art to create his magnificent illustrations. Bound in glossy illustrated paper boards with a pictorial dust jacket depicting Rapunzel in her tower. The book and dust jacket are in near fine condition. Measures 9.5 x 12.5 inches. Unpaginated [ 32 pages = 3 page afterword by Zelinsky. CHILD/103023.

Very Good in Good+ dj
Description
New York: The Macaulay Company. Very Good in Good+ dj. (c.1934). Later Printing?. Hardcover. [light shelfwear to bottom of book, very slight deterioration of cloth at spine extremities; jacket shows some edgewear, a couple of tiny closed tears, moderate fading to spine, light soiling to rear panel]. Circus novel about "the nonchalant Mario Verona, greatest living king of the flying trapeze, [who] rose from an obscure continental performer to become the spoiled darling of America's big top," and the two women who loved him: "the famous Mavis Merton, tragic Queen of the Air, [and] Mitzi, "another aerialist, young, vivacious, loyal, and gallant." Although the jacket blurb touts the book's realistic depiction of the circus milieu, an unnamed critic for Variety mocked the publisher's claims that the author had actually traveled with a circus, noting that "any story which has a gymnast doing three forward triples and two double backs in the course of a seven minute turn is far from authentic." (Well, yeah!) .
