Description
Gambier, OH: Ellen Sheffield, 2021. Number 9 of 18 copies signed and numbered by the book artist. Ellen writes about her book arts: "As a visual artist, a maker, and a noticer of surfaces, images, words and spaces, one of my affinities is for fossil records such as dictionaries and encyclopedias where words are alphabetized, indexed, and otherwise removed from traditional narrative structures. As noted in a recent feature article on artists' archives, if you look up "abacus," "alligator," or "akimbo" in an old Webster's dictionary, you will see my college faculty advisor's illustrations, "providing a visual definition of those words." Professor Anita Rogoff deepened my text/image obsession. Many of my artist's books are rooted in these early experiences with wordplay and disrupted narrative. They are investigations of letterform perception, of reading comprehension, and of giving tangible form to the poet's quiet voice. By physically dismantling the book structure and recombining its parts (spine, page, table of contents, etc.), meaning is reframed through layered intersections of art, typography, and page design. This new configuration then become the larger field or "page" through which context is revealed or veiled, and our understanding of words and the reading process is altered." In the colophon she describes this intriguing book containing her poem. She writes that the text is a poem inspired by an article on Lost Person Behavior, the science of knowing where to search for someone based on which of 41 profiles applies. Implicit in my poem are hard things, feeling forlorn when contemplating a family history...of mostly unseen manifestations of hopelessness...Pulling apart and fracturing my poem's lines set them adrift amid images of my aerial snow-covered landscapes photographed on a winter flight. The work has two overlapping pamphlets on Unryu & Strathmore tracing paper with a Haijiro In a tri-fold black Khadi paper box enclosure, with inkjet prints of the artist's ariel photos, and letterpress printed text of the artist's poem. In fine condition. Measures 8.5 x 5.75 inches. ARTB/042726.

Description
Louisville: Southern Conference Educational Fund, Inc, 1976. Very Good. Sixty-six separate 4-page issues of this monthly newsletter/newspaper. 42 cm. Issues for 1965-1968 printed on well preserved white paper have a few chips and are not browned. Issues for 1968-1976 were printed on newsprint and are browned to varying but not extreme degrees and have become slightly brittle. Later horizontal fold, probably for mailing or storage. A couple of early issues have a mailing label for the SDS-MSU Chapter in East Lansing. Most other issues have labels or mailing imprints for various individuals in Michigan. Several issues have no label or mailing imprint. The Southern Conference Educational Fund, regarded by many as Far Left, was dedicated to ending racism, poverty and other injustices in the South and to opposing war as an instrument of national policy. The organization was very supportive of SNCC and other Civil Right efforts. Rev. Fred L. Shuttlesworth was actively involved with this organization for at least part of the period covered by these issue, as were Carl and Anne Braden. The Southern Patriot was generally published monthly 10 times a year excluding August and July -- although the 6th number in both 1973 and 1974 was identified as June-July. No issues were published for October or November of 1974. No more issues were published after December, 1976.

Description
New York: Grosset & Dunlap. Very Good+. [1931] (c.1929). Reprint (stated 6th printing). Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of the first edition jacket; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [a nice-looking copy with only light shelfwear, faint age-toning to edges of text block, one-time owner's name plus date & place of purchase and brief comment written in ink on front endpaper]. The first mystery novel by "Queen," which also marked the debut of the authorial team's eponymous protagonist, a writer and bibliophile, who was forever being enlisted to assist his father, Inspector Richard Queen, in the solving of some baffling crime -- in this instance, the murder of a sleazy lawyer in the audience during a theatrical performance. Barzun and Taylor, in "A Catalogue of Crime," pronounce this book "a landmark rather than a cornerstone, perhaps," and are somewhat disdainful of the father-son duo's "immense thoroughness and almost fatiguing pertinacity" as well as their "egregious bonhomie," while still allowing as how "the neatness of the plot involving a missing hat in a theater murder cannot be denied." Per the jacket blurb, the book had been "chosen from more than 100 selected manuscripts to represent the [original publisher's] contribution to the mysterio-detective literature of 1929," and by any measure it was an auspicious debut -- and for once justified an enthusiastic jacket-blurb writer's declaration that "Ellery Queen bids fair to join that immortal group to which Sherlock Holmes, Lupin and few others belong." Indeed Ellery Queen did become a household name -- even if it was not so much due to the quality of the authors' prodigious output as for the ubiquity of the EQ imprimatur throughout the mid-20th century: Ellery Queen's Mystery Magazine, innumerable mystery fiction anthologies under their editorship, "Queen's Quorum," the Queen's Awards, etc.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE of the first edition dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. A further NOTE about the dating of this book: although Grosset & Dunlap printing statements (e.g. "Sixth printing, September 16, 1930" in this book) are not always to be taken as accurate -- often their editions were reprinted from the original publisher's plates, and whatever printing information appeared there was simply carried over -- in this case I believe the printing of this book quite likely was very close from early 1931. This is based primarily on the fact that of the many books advertised in the nine pages of ads at the back of the volume, I didn't see any title that was published any later than 1929, and also because this title was advertised in a book distributor's catalogue as newly-available in a "Popular Copyright" edition (this one, basically) for the 1931-1932 season. At any rate, it's a very nice copy and will not disgrace your shelves while you're saving up your pennies to buy a true first in jacket. .
