Description
New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1923. First edition. Fine/Near Fine. A Fine copy in a Very Good+ dust jacket. A tight, square copy with bright gilt to spine. Dust jacket with minor rubbing and wear at the spine ends and one small chip from the lower spine fold. Front flap fold splitting at the lower edge (about 2.5"), but generally an attractive example, and unrestored. Fitzgerald's only play, a satire on the American Presidency. "A resounding theatrical flop [that was] published by Scribeners on 27 April, 1923 in a print run of 7,650 copies retailing at $1.50, it opened for a week's trial on 19 November 1923 at Nixon's Apollo Theatre in Atlantic City...The first night was a debacle, with, as Zelda Fitzgerald put it in a letter, 'people so obviously bored' and some audience members walking out during the second act" (Tredell, Bruccoli). There is now conjecture that The Vegetable's problems stemmed from Fitzgerald's desire to focus on another project at hand: the development of The Great Gatsby. "He had begun to plan the novel in June, 1923, saying to Maxwell Perkins 'I want to write something new - something extraordinary and beautiful'...But that summer and fall was devoted to the production of The Vegetable" (Mizener). Rare on the market due to its limited print run, The Vegetable is a testament to the diversity of Fitzgerald's literary career; and though his only attempt on the stage was not the soaring success he'd hoped for, Fitzgerald would ultimately find fame in Hollywood with his works capturing the imagination of Golden Age directors and actors. Fine in Near Fine dust jacket.

New York: Henry Holt and Company, 1928 Illustrated with four woodcuts by J. J. Lankes, including a frontispiece. First edition, first state, lacking first edition statement to copyright page. Publisher's paper-covered boards over green cloth, with gilt illustration to front board, and spine lettered in gilt; lacking dust jacket. Very good book, with spine ends and corners rubbed to boards, and light toning to spine. Overall, a clean copy of Frost's enduring collection of poetry. Crane A10. West-Running Brook is a collection of 39 poems, including "Spring Pools," "A Peck of Gold," "Once the Pacific," "Acquainted with the Night," "Canis Major," "A Passing Glimpse," "The Peaceful Shepherd," "The Flower," and "On Looking Up by Chance at the Constellations," among others. The poems are thematically divided into six sections: "I: Spring Pools," "II: Fiat Nox," "III: West-Running Brook," "IV: Sand Dunes," "V: Over Back," and "VI: My Native Simile." Throughout the text, Frost uses nature as allegory for human interactions and political themes. For example, the titular "West-Running Brook" involves a husband and wife conversing about a brook that runs west instead of east, which Frost uses as a symbol for the importance of contrast to achieve harmony in personal relationships. The text is illustrated with woodcuts by Lankes, and their rough beauty is perfectly paired with Frost's verse.. First Edition. Hard Cover. Very Good.

Weston, VT: The Countryman Press, 1938. First Edition. Very good. First edition; 7 1/2 x 5; pp. [1], 2-16; stapled, orange, pictorial wraps, printed in black; illustrated with a small vignette at the end of the text; a bit of spotting along margins of wraps; light wear to edges and tips of spine; overall in very good condition. Robert Carlton Brown (1886 - 1959) was a world traveler, author, editor, bookseller, and publisher. In the early 1900s, he contributed poetry and prose to various periodicals in New York and published two novels. After, he traveled extensively through South America, Europe, and Asia with his wife Rose Brown, also an author, and lived in Rio de Janeiro, where he published a magazine, and in Paris, in the 1930s, where he issued several poetry collections. The family also toured the Soviet Union. On their return to the US, the two wrote various international cookbooks. He ran a bookstore, called Bob Brown's Books, in Greenwich Village in the 1950s. His current book contained various recipes for wines, beers, and cocktails, which in his own words were "high spots in homemade hilarity - the kind that made Great Aunt Agatha dance on the table and kick the lamp over - about the time of the Chicago fire."
