WorldCat (4 copies, none in the U.S., all with a Peters imprint, successor to ; Peter of Kühnel, from 1813). Hirsch III, 490. "[French] violinist and composer... Rode had a short but brilliant career. As one of the great virtuosos of his time he... was celebrated in all European capitals (except London)... Rode's compositions are almost exclusively devoted to his instrument... As Rode was closely attached to the string quartets of Haydn and Mozart as a... performer, he also practiced the genre as a composer and wrote attractive works, which, however, are clearly in the French tradition of the Quatuor brillant, as the first violin dominates and the other strings only accompany." Description
Oxford: Slatter and Rose, 1861. Book. 8vo, orig. cloth gilt. Pp. 46. Some wear to cloth at spine, a bit shaken. A very good copy. Sole edition; a presentation copy, inscribed, lilkely in Tyerman's hand, "To James Morrell Esq. with John Pratt's respectful duty." With Morrell's engraved bookplate. A fascinating account of a long-lived itinerant herbalist, who collected plants for local druggists and the Society of Apothecaries, by which he supported a wife and seventeen children. "He was never happy unless he was breaking new ground, planning expeditions, or making discoveries; and when he received a commission, neither distance nor labour were any object to him. He has often walked fifty, and sometimes sixty miles a day. In this manner he travelled into every county in England, and even found his way ino Scotland and Wales." There are accounts of gypsies, including one of Pratt's escape from the spell of a gypsy sorceress. The memoir closes with a description of Pratt in advanced age, with closely observed geriatric details. Even at 106, Pratt continued to gather herbs. A 5 pp. list of plants sought by him is appended. OCLC locates five copies..
