Description
Los Angeles: Twentieth Century-Fox, 1971. Revised Draft script for the 1971 film. Produced for use on location in New York City in March and April 1971, when shooting for the film commenced there. William Friedkin made his name with this gritty adaptation of Robin Moore's 1969 nonfiction account of east coast drug trafficking and its impact on New York City undercover police officers. Perhaps the greatest of the many 1970s crime films that were shot on location in New York City, with glorious period detail in nearly every frame. The screenplay was written by author Ernest Tidyman, one year after the publication of his seminal Harlem-based crime novel, "Shaft." Winner of five Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Screenplay, and Best Actor (Hackman), along with three additional nominations. Tan titled wrappers, noted as FRIEDKIN DRAFT and REVISED on the front wrapper in manuscript pencil, dated 3/23/71 and 4/26/71 in manuscript pencil. Title page not present. Last leaf of text unnumbered. Xerographic duplication, with photocopied punch holes, and a few revision pages throughout, dated variously between 4/26/71 and 3/23/71. Pages and wrapper about Near Fine, bound with three gold brads. National Film Registry. Grant US. Penzler 101. Spicer US Neo-Noir.

Description
St Petersburg: Typographia Academiae, 1734. First Edition. Contemporary stiff vellum with a blind stamped central medallion and borders.. Very good; spot on spine from gum label; no accessioning; front joint partially cracked; a bit dusty.. 4to, [22], [1] - 362, [10 - index] pp. + 7 engraved plates; head and tailpieces. Text is in Latin with Arab, Greek, and Syriac fonts. Founded during the Seleucid Empire the city of Edessa was the precursor to modern Urfa (Turkish: Sanliurfa) established after the Parthian Wars that was to become the center of the Arabic Abgarid dynasty and the kingdom of Osroene. It was eventually to be the seat of the most important bishopric in Syria. The book offered here is a study of the coinage and history of the city and kingdom centered about it. Bayer was a among a small group of pioneering German "orientalists" in the early 18th century. It is not by chance that he emigrated to St Petersburg to take up his post as professor of Greek and Roman antiquities. His move coincided with the first of the great exploratory expeditions mounted by the St Petersburg Academy in 1725 that marked the beginning of an era of renewed interest in the history and antiquity of the Russian empire. Cicognara #2756; see Marchand, German Orientalism ....

Description
London: Bradbury & Evans, 1857 London: Bradbury and Evans, 1857-1859. In the original 24 serial parts. First edition, first issue, p. 207 with "actresses" for "ancestresses", and part 12 with chapters XVII-XVIII misnumbered as XVIII-XIX. Publisher's yellow paper wrappers, advertisements present. A very good set with some toning and soiling to wrappers, some wear to edges, particularly to volumes I, X, XV, XVI, XVIII-XX, and XIV, the others being only lightly worn, a few light pencil and ink marks from previous owners, volume IV with small bookseller's sticker to front wrapper, volume I with spine split and several pages disbound but present. Overall, a lovely set that presents well. The Virginians, written as a sequel to Thackeray's earlier work Henry Esmond (1852), picks up where the first novel left off, telling the story of Henry Esmond's two grandsons, George and Henry Warrington. A historical novel, the book takes place at the start of the American Revolution, and the two protagonists must navigate the obstacles of standing on opposing sides during the war. Unlike most of Thackeray's work, The Virginians is set in North America.. First Edition. Soft Cover. Very Good.

Description
Hartford, Connecticut: The Connecticut Mutual Life Insurance Company, 1963. Near-fine.. A guide for young adults (i.e. young men) embarking on their own in college, offering advice for navigating the new life changes they are facing. Includes quirky illustrations to accompany a range of hypothetical situations such as finding one's social niche, avoiding shyness, and finding one's "masculinity". The last of these situations is a thinly veiled reference to questioning and discovering LGBTQIA+ identity, and makes clear that the hypothetical "George" needs to stifle these questions and stick to heteronormativity: "George is very unhappy, [and] needs help to cope with his festering needs. Otherwise he may settle for a dim life, arrested by a succession of psychosomatic illnesses". Single vol. (5" by 8"), pp. 20, illus., stapled in original illus. wrps. Note that the term "young adults" in this booklet does not extend to women: "Right here let me offer an apology to the girls. We know you have your own special worries. They will be the subject of a booklet we hope will come along soon" (p.1). It is unclear what "special worries" girls have, but we can only assume this involves some kind of preoccupation with getting married and becoming a homemaker, given the date of publication (1963).

Paperback. New. $150. * Reprint of the final reissue of Lewis's edition, first published in 1897. It contains the text of the 1778 Oxford edition, the last edited by Blacktone, but omits the appendices to Books 3 and 4. "The material used in the preparation of this edition may be divided into four classes. First, [modern research] into the history of our law, such as the works of Maine, of Pollock and Maitland, and of Vinogradoff. Second, the statutes in England and the United States which modify the statements in the text. Third, the notes of my predecessors. Fourth, the cases decided and the text-books published since Blackstone's day which have referred to him as an authority. (...) The fourth class of material is, in my judgment, by far the most important. All reports and text-books published since Blackstone's day were carefully searched for references to his work.": Preface iii. This reissue not in Eller.

Black paper over boards with spine lettered in gilt. Pages are clean and unmarked. Binding is sound. ABOUT THIS BOOK: This book is a major and wide-ranging study of the great epidemic scourges of humanity-plague, leprosy, smallpox, syphilis, cholera, and yellow fever/malaria-over the last six centuries. It is also much more. Sheldon Watts applies a wholly original perspective to the study of global disease, exploring the connections between the movement of epidemics and the manifestations of imperial power in the Americas, Asia, Africa, and in European homelands. He argues that not only did Western medicine fail to cure the diseases that its own expansion engendered, but that imperial medicine was in fact an agent and tool of empire. Watts examines the relationship between the pre-modern and modern medical profession and such epidemic disasters as the plague in western Europe and the Middle East; leprosy in the medieval West and in the nineteenth-century tropical world; the spread of smallpox to the New World in the age of exploration; syphilis and nonsexual diseases in Europe's connection with Asia; cholera in India during British rule; and malaria in the Atlantic Basin during the eras of slavery and Social Darwinism.(Publisher).
