Description
Paris: Allouard et Kaeppelin, [1852]. First Edition. Contemporary half calf with marbled boards.. Very Good; some wear to the binding; frontispiece reinforced at gutter.. 8vo, [2], vi, [7] - 372 pp. + frontispiece. AN ADDITIONAL 44 pp. MANUSCRIPT WITH MOUNTED ILLUSTRATIONS OF GAMES APPENDED TO THE TEXT BY ALFRED JUMELLE. A superb association copy with an important narrative regarding chess and the social and artistic life at the Café de la Regence. The manuscript annotations and 'appendage' are by an habitué of the Café de la Regence - the chess players and social rendezvous during the 18th and 19th century at the Place du Palais-Royal and then, after 1852, at 161 rue Saint-Honoré - Alfred Jumelle, the Parisian aesthete and accomplished chess player. He was a member of numerous societies (e.g., Soc. de Géographie, Union centrale des Beaux-Arts appliqués à l'Industrie) and a frequent contributor to the journal La Stratégie and the Parisian press. The Café de la Regence played host to the greats of the game and society (Marx and Engels played there). Diderot makes note of it in his Neveu de Rameau; it was frequently cited by Philodor and Jean Jacques Rousseau. The decade of the fifties and sixties were its high point. It saw such notables as the great Paul Morphy - recorded here (alas, NOT the great "Opera" game that Morphy played on Oct. 21, 1858 at the Salle Le Peletier during the performance of Norma). The 42 page manuscript appended to the text commences with a commentary of chess techniques and strategies in the game, chess problems offered in contemporary literature of the subject, interspersed with comments on the Café de la Regence and bickering skirmishes among its patrons (there is a list of the regular players at the Café between 1854 - 1858 including Alfred de Musset, Pierre Saint-Amant, future president Jules Grevy, Daniel Harrwitz the great German player, etc.). There is a substantial entry dated Sept. 27, 1858 recording the appearance and games of the American phenom Paul Morphy - who undertook 8 games. He records a game between Harrwitz and Morphy; another between Maczuski and Duclos (1869). An important, detailed, unknown commentary.

Description
Amsterdam: Janssonio-Waesbergios, 1709. Small octavo (19 x 11 cm.), [xxxiv], 277, [44] pages. Illustrated frontispiece designed and engraved by J. Goeree. The image depicts a Roman kitchen with a staff of five preparing a meal. EDITION. LARGE PAPER COPY? The early cookbook compiled by Apicius, known as a gourmet at the time of the Emperor Tiberius. The work is a compilation from the 4th or 5th century, incorporating parts of his original work, parts of a similar work by Apuleius, and several Greek books on the subject. It combines recipes for the average middle-class household with some for the more luxurious table, and also contains interesting dietetic prescriptions and imaginative sauces. Lister's comments appear on one side of the two-column portions under each of the main Apicius sections; the second column is the commentary of Gabriel Humelberg (or Hummelberger) who edited a 1542 edition of which his commentary represented two thirds of the text. Humelberg (1487-1544) was a German humanist, doctor and botanist who particularly studied medicinal plants and ancient botanical writings. ~ Eighteenth century speckled calf, covers ruled in blind, expertly re-backed. Spine with five raised bands ruled in gilt, red morocco label lettered in gilt, edges sprinkled red, armorial bookplate on front paste-down. Neat ink signature of front free-endpaper, some minimal foxing, corners of binding worn, otherwise an excellent copy. [Bitting, page 13; Brunet, vol. 1, col. 343; Catalogue of the Library of Thomas Jefferson 1192; Pennell, page 112; Vicaire].

Description
New York: Printed [by the De Vinne Press] for the Grolier Club, 1887. ONE OF 250 COPIES on Holland paper and two on vellum. 180 x 110 mm. (7 1/8 x 4 1/2"). Two volumes.. GRACEFUL BROWN CRUSHED MOROCCO, GILT, BY SANGORSKI & SUTCLIFFE (stamp-signed on rear turn-in), upper cover framed by multiple gilt fillets interlaced at corners, center panel with gilt lettering at head and foot, and a six-petalled gilt ornament with inlaid green morocco dot at center, raised bands, gilt-ruled spine compartments and titling, gilt-ruled turn-ins, top edges gilt, other edges untrimmed. Each volume WITH AN ORIGINAL WATERCOLOR PORTRAIT of a main character from the novel by Alfred Brennan, dated 1907. ◆Small stain at head edge of free endpaper and flyleaf in volume I, otherwise AN ESPECIALLY FINE SET with no signs of use inside or out. With an original watercolor by a noted American illustrator and a binding by one of Edwardian England's top workshops, this is surely the ultimate copy of the Grolier Club's limited edition of Reade's first novel, printed for its distinguished bibliophile members. First published in 1852, "Peg Woffington" features the 18th century Irish actress Margaret Woffington (1720-60) as its central character and focuses on her brilliant career in the London theater and her liaison with the great David Garrick. The original watercolors are by Alfred Laurens Brennan (1853-1921), a painter and successful illustrator for national publications and for children's books who was admired for his technical virtuosity. Binders Francis Sangorski and George Sutcliffe met as boys attending Douglas Cockerell's bookbinding classes at the L. C. C. Central School. Cockerell was so impressed by their skill that he hired Sutcliffe as a finisher and Sangorski as a forwarder. In 1901, Francis and George went into business for themselves, and before long, they had become two of the most renowned English binders of the 20th century. The taste and technique displayed in our binding attests to their talents. According to the American Printing History Association, "No one has earned a place in the annals of American printing history more solidly than Theodore Low De Vinne (1828-1914). His encyclopedic understanding of the craft, his advancement of its technology and design, his appreciation of its history, his business leadership, and his many writings earned him, among his contemporaries, the designation 'Dean of American Printers.'" A co-founder of the Grolier Club, De Vinne designed and printed most of its publications issued during his lifetime. This set has everything a bibliophile could ask for: fine printing, original illustration, elegant binding, and outstanding condition..

Description
Dick & Fitzgerald, 1869. Hardcover. Very Good. Jessel 663 describes this work as an abridgment of Green's Exposure of the Arts and Miseries of Gambling and Gambling Exposed 'without the moral and religious element. The work is the first I have met with to describe "eucre" (sic) and poker. The author states that poker was played as far back as 1829'. Although Green is, as in his other works, identified on the title page as 'The Reformed Gambler', the tone in this work is less moralistic, offering instructions on how to perform card tricks as well as how to spot cheats. The copyright page seems to list 1869, but the considerably worn type (particularly on this page and visible in the page numbers) suggests a later printing, as does the price of 50 cents on the cover. Further investigation of the appended advertisements could identify a likely date. Half cloth and pictorial paper boards. List of 'Good Books' available from Dick & Fitzgerald on the back cover. Significant wear to boards, especially corners. 5 pages of ads, 114 pages, 27 pages of ads, ads double as endpapers. 12 x 17.5 cm.

Description
Two parts in one volume, 8vo (160x106 mm). [20], 438, [2]; [16], 575, [1] pp. Collation: †8 ††2 A-DD8 EE4; *8 A-NN8. Printer's device on title pages. Early 20th-century half vellum, double lettering piece on spine. Some marginal staining, small loss to the outer margin of a few leaves without loss. A very nice copy, uncut with deckle edges. FIRST COLLECTED EDITION. Atanagi's Delle lettere facete was first published in Venice in 1561. Atanagi had planned a second book, but his work on it was interrupted with his death in 1573. The material was gathered together and published by Francesco Turchi on behalf of Aldo Manuzio two years later in 1575. Both volumes were printed together for the first time in Venice by Altobello Salicato in 1601. Both books were put in the Parma Index of 1580, but not in those published in Rome in 1590 and 1593 (cf. J.M. Bujanda, R. Davignon, E. Stanek, M. Richter, eds., Index de Rome: 1590, 1593, 1596, avec étude des index de Parme 1580 et Munich 1582, Sherbrooke, 1994, p. 151, no. 354). The first volume contains 183 letters grouped by authors and arranged in chronological order. Most of the letters are dated between 1507 and 1558. The volume also contains the only sixteenth century printing of a satirical text on the Rome of Paul III by Jacopo Bonfadio (ca. 1508-1550), here entitled Al Furfante Re della della Furfantissima Furfanteria (pp. 323-336). The volume ends with two long letters addressed by Girolamo Muzio to Vittoria Farnese Della Rovere, Duchess of Urbino, in which the author, "in persona del Verno contra la State", paradoxically praises the winter against summer (cf. M.C. Volume two gathers 159 letters and 6 satirical texts, including the second edition of the celebrated Formaggiata, the first book on cheese ever published. A.F. Catalogo unico, IT\ICCU\RMLE\012784 and IT\ICCU\BA1E\001767.

Caneyville, Kentucky: Self-published, 1891. Cloth. Near Fine. A sharp, well-preserved copy of the uncommon 1891 1st edition. Tight and Near Fine in its deep-red cloth, with bright gilt-titling (and decorative bordering) along the front panel and spine. 12mo, includes chapters such as "Woman in the Garden", "Christian and Pagan Womanhood", "By What Authority", "My Call to the Ministry", etc. A brave, late 19th century, self-published call (from rural Kentucky, no less) for the promotion of women in the ministry and an increasinlgly visible role for women as preachers. A nice example of challenging late 19th century Southern religious doctrine....and, in a broader sense, a nice piece of late 19th century Americana.

Los Angeles: FoxVideo, 1993. VHS. Near Fine. SIGNED. Three VHS cassettes in individual cardboard sleeves. All within publisher's leatherette slipcase, with bright green stamped titles and paper labels illustrated with a cracking Facehugger Egg. Mild bumping and rubbing to extremities of sleeves and slipcase. Though they have no apparent physical flaws, the VHS tapes have not been tested. Signed in silver ink by 10 notable names associated with the Alien franchise, including Bill Paxton, Paul Reiser, Lance Henrickson and Harry Dean Stanton. Probable signatures include Tom Skerritt, Mark Rolston and Charles S. Dutton. The multi-award winning "Alien" was released in 1979, at a time when many film critics were dismissive of the genre. Though initial reviews were mixed, the impact of the trilogy was re-examined over the following decades, and it is now considered one of the greatest and most influential science fiction films of all time.

Description
Gainsborough: Printed by H. Mozley, 1809 Second edition. Both the first edition and the present edition are very scarce. OCLC lists only two copies of the first edition (one at the British Library and one at the Morgan Library) and two copies of the present edition (one at UCLA and one at the Huntington Library). . Original drab boards. Eighteenmo. With engraved frontispiece and two text illustrations, which Thomas Hugo attributes to John Bewick in the 1866 descriptive catalogue The Bewick Collector (3799). Backstrip worn. Some dampstaining on lower board and some rubbing to extremities. Twentieth century bookplate on front pastedown. Some toning throughout and some light foxing, but overall a very good, clean copy of a scarce book. The present book is a collection of three salutary and cautionary tales. "The Happy Shepherd" uses the figure of a kind, humble shepherd to illustrate the virtues of a simple life lived free from "the follies of a licentious age," (p. 39). In the second tale, "The History of a Coxcomical Fellow," a young man named Tommy Changeling falls into a pattern of skipping school and disregarding his schoolwork, which eventually leads him down a path of alcoholism and crime; the tale ends when Tommy is caught and sent to Africa to be sold into slavery (p. 55). "The Disappointed Lovers" tells of Damon and Floretta, a young couple who are ultimately punished with smallpox and confinement in a convent, respectively, for their greed and hedonism.

Description
Albany: Steam-Press of C. Van Benthuysen, 1839-40. Quarto (34cm). Contemporary half-calf over paper-covered boards; [3],208pp; inserted portrait frontispiece (of Buel); text illustrations. Binding scuffed, leather on spine somewhat dry, but structurally sound and internally quite clean but for some mild to moderate foxing, most pronounced on title page and first page of text; Very Good. Bound volume of twelve issues from March to December, 1839; monthly except for August and November, for which months two numbers were issued. Buell (1778-1839) began his career as a printer and publisher; he was the proprietor of two partisan Democratic newspapers in the teens and twenties (the Ulster Plebeian and the Albany Argus). But his most important accomplishments were in the area of agricultural reform, beginning with the establishment of his own experimental farm near Albany in the early 1820s. By the end of that decade he had become a leading spokesman for "scientific methods" in agriculture; in addition to establishing a number of agricultural associations (including the New York State Agricultural Society in 1832), "...his most important accomplishment was to establish a career as an influential agricultural writer. He set the Albany Cultivator on a firm footing as one of the leading journals of its day...he included many original contributions in its pages, enlisting the knowledge of hundreds of agents and correspondents..." [ANB]. The Cultivator ran from 1834 to 1865; following Buel's death in 1839 it merged with Luther Tucker's The Gennesseean.

Description
London: Cassell and Company, 1894. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. Volume one only of a five volume series. This volume contains 36 black and white portraits accompanied by a brief, adulatory biographical piece. Subjects are drawn from many spheres of British society and culture, with an emphasis on royalty, the aristocracy, the stage, and the arts. Among those included are the Duke and Duchess of Fife, Sarah Bernhardt, Archbishop of Canterbury, Price of Wales, Frederic Leighton, and Mrs. Humphrey Ward. This is an ex-library volume with the bookplate of the City of York Public Library affixed to the front pastedown. In what was probably an effort to discourage readers from taking photographs, the library applied an unobtrusive but visible embossed stamp to the margins of the photos, not affecting the portrait itself. Despite these factors the photographs are still interesting and attractive. Bound in brown cloth with floral borders to front boards and titles in gilt to front and to spines. Some bumping and rubbing, remains of small white stickers at foot of spine, but otherwise in quite good condition. Save for the small embossed stamps, the photographs are in very good condition. 96 pages plus photographs. PHOTO/081017.
