Description
4to (194x146 mm). [44] leaves. Collation: A-L4. The final leaf is a blank. Woodcut ornament on the title page. Woodcut decorative initials, head- and tail-pieces. Roman, Greek, and Hebrew types. Modern cloth-backed boards. Occasional reading signs and marginal notes in a 17th-century hand. Slightly uniformly browned. A good copy. Rare original edition of the funeral speech for Dorothea Ursula von Baden-Durlach (1559-1583) by the Tübingen professor Dietrich Schnepff, followed by verses in Latin, Greek, and Hebrew by several scholars, including Valentin Cless (1561-1634), Leonhard Engelhart (1526-1602), Paulus Schede Melissus (1539-1602), Johann Scholtz (1558-1618), Simon Studion (1543-1605), and Paul Weniger (1552-1619). Princess Dorothea Ursula von Baden was born in Pforzheim on 20 June 1559, the daughter of Karl II von Baden-Durlach (1529-1577) and Anna von Pfalz-Veldenz. She married Duke Ludwig III von Württemberg (1554-1594) on 7 November 1575 at age of 16 and died in Nuremberg on 19 May 1583 at the age of 23. Schnepff here describes her as "donum Dei" ('a gift from God'), celebrates the noble origins of the young woman and in particular her parents for the education they gave her, dwells on her studies, especially religious ones, describes her both physically and morally, praises her piety, recalling how she read the Bible and Luther's commentaries with avidity and passion, highlights the charity she did for the poor, so much so that she established a 'pharmacopolion' at the court of Tübingen, i.e. a pharmacy that distributes free medicines to those in need. He discusses her marriage to Ludwig and the infertility issues that troubled her. Finally, he describes her death in Nuremberg from a brain condition, and the funeral procession upon the return of her body. This was attended not only by prominent figures from the duchy, but also by 1,200 students and many people from the countryside. In the oration, Schnepf quotes Homer, St. Augustine, Socrates, Cicero, Luther, St. Basil, John Chrysostom, Gregory of Nazianzus, and the prophet Isaiah. The verses include lines in Greek composed by Martin Crusius (1526-1607), Tübingen professor of Greek and Latin, known as the 'champion of philhellenism in Europe', and a Hebrew poem by the preacher and philologist Konrad Kircher (fl. 2nd half of the 16th cent.), given in Hebrew, in transliteration, and in Latin translation. Dietrich (or Theodor) Schnepf (Snepffius) was born in Wimpfen in 1525, the son of the theologian Erhard Schnepf (1495-1558). Schnepf attended Latin schools in Marburg and Stuttgart and enrolled at the University of Tübingen in 1539. In 1544, he received his master's degree alongside Jakob Dachtler the Younger (1525-1598), Georg Liebler (1524-1600), and David Chyträus (1530-1600). He then became teacher of Greek in Tübingen. In 1550, together with Jacob Heerbrand (1521-1600), Jakob Andreae (1528-1590), and Jakob Dachtler, he studied Hebrew privately with Erasmus Oswald Schreckenfuchs (1511-1579). In 1553, Schnepf became a pastor in Derendingen. In 1554, he received his doctorate in theology in Tübingen with a dissertation on the doctrine of original sin. From 1555, he was special superintendent and city pastor in Nürtingen. In 1557, he succeeded Martin Frecht (1494-1556) as professor of theology in Tübingen. In the same year, he took part in the Worms Religious Colloquy and in 1561 in the Colloquy in Erfurt. Schnepf was rector of the university six times betwee 1561 and 1584. In April 1564, he participated in the Maulbronn Religious Colloquy. In 1568, he delivered the funeral oration for Duke Eberhard (1545-1568), in 1569 for Duke Christoph of Württemberg (1515-1568) and in 1583 for Dorothea Ursula of Baden-Durlach. In 1569, Schnepf, together with professor of law Kilian Vogler (1516-1585), was sent as an envoy of the university to the new Duke Ludwig the Pious (1554-1593) to confirm its privileges. Around 1570, Schnepf preached in Tübingen against the prevalent belief in witchcraft at the time. During the plague epidemic of 1571/72, when around 950 people died in Tübingen and the university was relocated to Esslingen, Schnepf remained in Tübingen to care for his congregation. In his academic work, Dietrich Schnepf drew up disputation theses for numerous theology students. In 1552, he married Barbara Brenz (1532-1572), a daughter of the Württemberg reformer Johannes Brenz (1499-1570) and his first wife Margarethe Gräter (1501-1548). In 1573, Schnepf married Juliana (Julia) Engelhardt (1533-1589), a daughter of the imperial chamber court lawyer Simon Engelhard and the widow of the court lawyer Abraham Spengler. Schnepf died in Tübingen in 1586 (cf. B. Wagner-Peterson, Schnepf(f)/Snepf(ius), Dietrich/Theodoricus, in: "Biographisch-Bibliographisches Kirchenlexikon", vol. 19, Bautz, 2001, cols. 1251-1257). The annotations show a careful reading of Schnepff's funeral speech and appreciation for the Latin verse of the theologian and teacher Johann Scholtz. A note below the Hebrew poem reads "legi d. 14 Feb. 1652". USTC, 680444; VD16, S-3306 (4 copies).

Description
Several locations in Japan. Near fine. 13" x 11". Commercial photo album, decorated cloth over boards, post-bound with tassels. 38 stiff card pages with 130 B&W photographs adhered and the last 10 pages are blank. Photos range from 2" x 3" to 5 " x 7¾" and nearly all are captioned. Near fine: album corners bumped; dedication page lightly toned; the rare faint spot, typically avoiding images. This is a lovingly crafted album of photographic memories gifted by Japanese students to Richard (R.G.) Heggie, an international relations professional and much-admired leader of Asian associations in California. Richard Gordon Heggie was born in Oakland in 1923 and graduated from the University of California, Berkeley. After serving as an officer in the Navy, he returned to UCB, earning a Master's in International Relations. During his 19-year career with the Asia Foundation Heggie was posted to Japan, the Philippines, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and India, and was then Executive Director of the World Affairs Council of Northern California for over 12 years, retiring in 1983. At Cal he served as Regent and Trustee, President of the Alumni Association and on the Board of the International House. His contributions to international affairs are countless; he was President of the Japan Society of Northern California and the Society for Asian Art; Chair of the San Francisco Committee on Foreign Relations; Vice Chair of the Chinese Culture Foundation; on the Board of the American Red Cross Bay Area and the West Coast Chapter of the Institute of International Education. He was also the first mayor of the City of Orinda. Heggie was awarded the Japan Society Lifetime Achievement Award and a California Alumni Citation. He died in 2012. We're not sure who compiled this album, but it was dedicated "To our Mr. R.G. Heggie / With our compliments / October 21st, 1955." It began with three pages of inscriptions in both English and Japanese calligraphy such as "I promise you to try to do my best / Takashi Hirosawa" and "May your love and kindness be given for all as ever!" Nearly all of the photos have detailed captions (and we've kept spelling and grammar as is), revealing conferences and meetings of Asian student groups, as well as social events. Our compiler identified attendees of the "Farewell party in honour of Mr. R.G. Heggie at Josui Kaikan" in 1955 and the "I.S.A. Conference of 1953," along with several lecturers and students on the street, "On way to committee meeting of every Saturday." One shot reveals a just-established chapter of the Kansai "Gakusei" (student) group, noting "It's fortune of the chapter to be able to have girl staff member, even if the number was one" and one shows the "General Assembly at National YMCA . . . Broadcasting Section's recording, with Minami Announcer's excellent narration. 'What is the role of Japanese students?'" Other images display a "Press club meeting," "Drama seminar in Sendai," students in front of the "Green Hotel, Karuizawa," being seen off at Haneda airport or interviewed by the media: "'What is your ambition?'" A few show "Konishi family members and UNESCO people," "secretariat office members," the "I.S.A. Band" and members of an "I.S.A. Handsome trio." We see a "foreign students discussion meeting" with "Indonesian, Indian and Thai students" in 1954, a "Picnic to Hayama," students broadcasting "Today's wheather ... No! Just telling the student affairs on the air," and the inspection and "celebration of the completion of Student Sanatorium." One lovely shot reveals "Matsui-San's smile of million yen - Happy boy surround by Japanese and Philippino students" and another a conference's "International Night" - "What a nice dancing for any people, young or old." A charming album showing international student associations and the efforts of their California leader.

London: Printed by R.H. and J.N. for Richard Whitaker, 1640. LATER, REVISED EDITION. Two separate title pages. Woodcut frontispiece, decorated initials, head- and tailpieces. Contemporary full calf with blind-tooled borders, spine label; corners and joints repaired, hinges reinforced, staining to first five and last eight leaves, tear to lower corner of Mm5 (p. 305), otherwise a very good copy with multiple ownership signatures, marks, and inscriptions. Revised edition. The books of homilies (two books first issued in 1547 and 1563, respectively) form a central part of the original official doctrine of the Church of England. The two books, developed during the rule of Edward VI and Elizabeth I, are composed of thirty-three sermons that were intended to communicate the central tenants of the nascent Church to the masses and to ease the separation of the Church with Rome following Henry VIII’s abjuration. This edition was printed on the eve of the First English Civil War, when religious and political tensions were at their peak and the Crown was eager to reaffirm the norms of the Church of England. While the final sermon, “Homily against disobedience, and willful rebellion” was originally written in response to Elizabeth I’s excommunication in 1570, it may have felt especially significant in the wake of the Scottish rebellion of 1639-40.
