Very good plus.
Description
[New York]: n.p., 1962. Very good plus.. Studio photographs of a single male model, by renowned physique photographer Lon of New York. Album of color photographs from three separate photo sessions with the same male model, taken in May-June of 1962. The subject - the "most handsome, gorgeous, magnificent V.B." of the handwritten title page dedication - appears in various attitudes and poses, nude or semi-nude in the style of the era's men's physique magazines, standing or reclining in elegant armchairs or against stately Greek columns. Hanagan, known professionally as Lon of New York, differed from many of his contemporaries in his focus on photographing men of color, particularly African American and Latino models, often from working-class backgrounds. While his early work in the '30s and '40s was for bodybuilding magazines, in later decades he selected models with a disarmingly average build, and photographed them with all the visual idealization typically reserved for men fitting the chiseled magazine ideal. In a late interview just before his death, the otherwise complimentary Village Voice offered a disdainful disclaimer before its praise: "Even if some of these lugs look out of their element perched on a fluted column in a posing strap," wrote Vince Aletti, before acknowledging that "Lon's best photos have the warmth of portraits and and a feeling for the soul". But Hanagan was aware, if the Village Voice was not, that no one is more or less 'in his element' when posing on a fluted column: that the 20th century visual language of erotic symbolism is a constructed one, an artificial world gesturing at an imagined classical past, and thus as open and inclusive and free of bias and snobbery as a given photographer allows it to be. Hanagan remembered: "I'd say, 'Now Sal, or Raul, or whoever, you're up there for one reason. You're there because you're an object of beauty. And you're supposed to think, I must be beautiful or I wouldn't be standing here." Photo album. Brown leatherette boards with metal comb binding. Approximately 215 color photographs, most 5'' x 2'', mounted to plastic sleeves recto and verso. Pen inscription to first page: "The most handsome, gorgeous, magnificent V.B. / - 1962 - / May 27 / June 5 / June 20". Front cover of album detached. Interior photographs fine.

Description
London: Richard Bentley & Son, 1881. FIRST EDITION. 230 x 132 mm. (8 x 5 1/4"). QUITE HANDSOME CONTEMPORARY FLECKED CALF, covers with a double gilt fillet frame with rosette cornerpieces, raised bands, spines gilt in compartments with a central urn framed by scrolling foliage, red and green morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges gilt. EXTRA-ILLUSTRATED WITH 90 PLATES, most protected by tissue guards. Spines just slightly sunned, occasional light offsetting from plates, a handful of plates with mild foxing, but a fine copy, extremely fresh and quite clean, in an unworn, extremely lustrous binding. Extra-illustrated and attractively bound, this is an appealing copy of John Doran's vignettes of 19th century London life and the theatre. A prolific writer of Irish origin, Doran (1807-78) worked as a private tutor, then became a full-time author and journalist, editing the "Church and State Gazette" and the "Atheneum." He produced many works, usually historical biographies, but also wrote extensively about the theatre, a lifelong passion. He had tried his hand at playwriting as a young man, and writes about the subject here with all the enthusiasm of a confirmed playgoer. The present volume is made up of essays nearly all originally published in the "Temple Bar Magazine," to which Doran regularly contributed. This periodical, which ran from 1860 to 1906, was a leading literary magazine of the day, publishing works by Wilkie Collins, Arthur Conan Doyle, Anthony Trollope, and Robert Louis Stevenson, among others. In our two handsome volumes here, the editors have collected Doran's pieces about the theatre (as the title suggests), but also historical vignettes, biographical sketches, and commentaries on modern life and his own experiences, told, as the introduction puts it, "with a sprightly wit." The present copy is enriched with a large number of attractive plates, primarily portraits depicting figures discussed, from actors to nobility, together with occasional illustrations of unusual scenes and events, such as Lord Nelson's funeral carriage..

Description
Chicago: Fleming H. Revell Co., 1904. First edition. Presentation copy, inscribed and signed by the author: “For Clara E. Laughlin, to whom / the ‘Light of Asia’s’ heart went out / from the first time he met her / till the end of his life; with / the admiring love of // Mary Eleanor Barrows / Christmas 1904.” Clara E. Laughlin (1873-1941) was the author of more than 35 books, headed a Travel Service with offices in Chicago, Los Angeles, New York, and Paris, and published a monthly magazine with a circulation of more than 80,000. The subject of the biography, John Henry Barrows, was the senior pastor at First Presbyterian Church, Chicago, at the time of the Exposition of 1893. Because of his proximity to the organizers of the Fair, he was asked to organize and chair a concurrent religious event. In preparation for what became known as the World Parliament of REligions, Barrows and his committee sent out some ten thousand personal letters (not to mention forty thousand documents) to the far corners of the world. “We affectionately invite the representatives of all faiths,” the letter said, “to aid us in presenting to the world, at the Exposition of 1893, the religious harmonies and unities of humanity, and also in showing forth the moral and spiritual agencies which are the root of human progress.” Beginning Spetember 11th, 1893, and for the following seventeen days, more than 4,000 representatives of the world’s religions -- Protestantism, Hinduism, Jainism, Islam, Judaism, Catholicism, Greek and Russian ORthodoxy, Confucianism, Taoism, Shintoism, Ethical Culture, and others -- met to “bring forth the truths the various religions teach in common,” and to “promote the brotherhood among religious men of diverse faith.” The Parliament was a landmark event bringing, for the first time in history, so diverse an audience. Octavo, bound by Sickles in purple levant & marbled boards, with the gilt-stamped monogram of Charles Edward Ballard (hotelier and circus owner) on the upper panel of the front cover, gilt-decorated spine, top edge gilt, uncut, [x], [11]-480 pp. Frontis. portrait. Near-Fine; spine somewhat faded, mostly unopened.

Description
[Augusta, ME?]: [publisher not identified], 1880. Staplebound. 30, [2]pp., wraps. 8.5 x 6 in. A summary report on the Greenback Controversy, in which voter fraud was alleged in the contested Maine state election of 1879. Alonzo Garcelon, a former Republican and opponent of “radical Republicanism”-turned-Democrat, contested the results of the September 1879 election, in which Democrats lost the governor’s office and seats in the state legislature to the Republican Party. Garcelon alleged that Democrat votes were suppressed and Republicans installed in the state legislature by means of bribery. Republicans led by Republican state senator James Blaine descended on the state capital to protest and Garcelon left office in January 1880. The Hale Committee was formed in February of 1880 to investigate the events, and it is this committee’s work which is criticized in the present tract, commissioned by Garcelon and his political allies in the Democratic Party.
