The specially bound 1964 Christmas Gift of A President's Country: A Guide to the Hill Country of Texas, inscribed by President Lyndon Johnson to National Security Advisor, McGeorge Bundy.. Twelvemo, 80pp. Full red calf, title stamped in gilt, saddle design on the front cover, gilt dentelles. Stated "First Edition 1964" on copyright page. Illustrated endpapers, appears unread. This work was edited by Jack Maguire with drawings by Mac Tatchell. Light wear at heel of the spine. Inscribed on the title page: "To Mary and Mack Bundy - with appreciation - Lyndon B. Johnson." Exceptionally rare. One of a small number of specially bound copies presented as Christmas gifts by President Johnson to his colleagues and close friends for Christmas 1964. McGeorge Bundy (1919-1996) served as Special Assistant to the President for National Security Affairs under Presidents John F. Kennedy and Lyndon B. Johnson. During Johnson's administration, Bundy remained one of the president's chief foreign policy advisers from 1963 until early 1966, helping shape U.S. policy on Vietnam at a time of deepening American involvement in the war. Before his White House service, Bundy had worked in government during World War II and later became a leading academic as dean of the Faculty of Arts and Sciences at Harvard.

Description: viii, 63 pp. 8vo, attractive antique calf-backed paste-paper boards, spine gilt, red morocco lettering piece on spine. Paris: Dubois, 1832. A rare sale catalogue of a varied and rich collection formed by one of Napoleon’s trusted advisors. Hauterive (1754-1830), statesman and archivist, fled from the Revolution to the United States, where he served as French consul in New York. He was recalled to France by Talleyrand to a high post in the office of foreign affairs in 1798. The two collaborated on De L’État de la France à la fin de l’an VIII (1800), which justified Napoleon’s coup d’état to the world. D’Hauterive entered Napoleon’s inner circle and significantly shaped the foreign policy of Napoleonic France. He was essential in the drafting of the Concordat of 1801 and his influence shines through in the final document. A disagreement with Talleyrand led to d’Hauterive’s reassignment to the archives of the foreign ministry, where he distinguished himself and was elected a member of the Académie des inscriptions et belles-lettres in 1820. 627 lots. At the beginning of the catalogue, the experts of this sale, Duchesne and Dubois, highlight some of the finer pieces in the collection, such as prints by Dürer, Schongauer, Lucas van Leyden, Rembrandt, Hollar, Poussin, Rubens, etc.; the famous books of Piranesi (no. 167), Buffon (no. 348), and Le Vaillant (no. 350); and artifacts from Greece, Italy, Egypt, as well as Hawaii, California, and Alaska. One section lists “Objets fabriqués par des peuples sauvages.” D’Hauterive also possessed an impressive library of illustrated books which is described herein, including books on architecture, natural history, costumes, emblems, voyages, and a handful of manuscripts. Nice copy, we find none in North America. As in most cases, the present copy lacks the supplement of 13 pages. ❧ Lugt 12936. N.B.G., Vol. 23, cols. 587-92.

Description: Rochester, N.Y.: Rochester Daily Advertiser Print, 1850. Broadside (21.9 x 25.4 cm.). An advertisement for F.M. Edson's Railroad Mill in Le Roy, Genesee County, New York. Flour manufactured from local wheat and "equal to any manufactured in the world!" It notes that new machinery ensures clean wheat and thus pure flour. Freeman Edson was one of the founding Directors of the Western Union Telegraph Company. Printed on plain cream-colored paper (we've handled them printed on salmon-colored paper as well). One hard crease to a corner (not effecting image), and some foxing to right edge, otherwise very good. Scarce.
