Description
Wittenberg: Georg Rhau, 1542, 1556. Hardcover. Fine. Bound in contemporary alum-tawed pigskin over wooden boards, one clasp defective, binding soiled and mildly worn and with small defects. The boards are ruled and tooled in blind, signed and dated “IPN 1556”. The contents are in excellent, crisp condition (one leaf working loose, marginal tear in margin of leaf E5, no loss). With a historiated woodcut title border to the “Apologia”. Woodcut coat-of-arms to verso of final leaf of the “Confessio”, and fine woodcut initials in the Saxon Confession. Text of second work in Latin and German. With 16th c. notes on the f.f.e.p. This is the authorized text of the Augsburg Confession (1st ed. 1531), approved by Luther, edited by and with the "Apologia" of Philip Melanchthon. It was printed by Georg Rhau, who also printed the first editions (both in Latin and German) of the “Confessio” and “Apologia”. The “Apologia” of this 1556 edition is dated 1542 (see VD 16, ZV 31340). This edition was printed in the wake of the agreement reached in 1555 between the Lutheran princes and Charles V, known as the Peace of Augsburg, which granted Lutheranism legal status within the Holy Roman Empire. Bound into this copy is the 1553 Leipzig edition of the Saxon Confession, which was drawn up by Melanchthon and intended for presentation at the Council of Trent; it presented the doctrinal status of the Lutheran Church of Germany as of 1552 and was the basis for the signing of the Peace of Augsburg. The Augsburg Confession: "On January 21, 1530, the Emperor Charles V issued letters from Bologna, inviting the German diet to meet in Augsburg on April 8, for the purpose of discussing and deciding various important questions. The far-seeing Landgrave of Hesse hesitated to attend the diet but the Elector John of Saxony, who received the writ March 11, directed Luther, Jonas, Bugenhagen, and Melanchthon to meet in Torgau, and present a summary of the Protestant faith, to be laid before the Emperor at the diet. This summary has received the name of the "Torgau articles". On April 3, the Elector and the reformers started from Torgau and reached Coburg on April 23. There Luther was left behind. The rest reached Augsburg May 2. On the journey Melanchthon worked on an "Apology" using the Torgau articles, and sent his draft to Luther at Coburg, who approved it. "The Emperor had ordered the confession to be presented to him on June 24. The evangelical princes, however, declared that they would not part with the confession until its reading should be allowed. The 25th was then fixed for the day of its presentation. In order to exclude the people, the little chapel of the Episcopal palace was appointed in place of the spacious city hall. The two Saxon chancellors Bruck and Beyer, the one with the Latin copy, the other with the German, stepped into the middle of the assembly, and against the wish of the Emperor, the German text was read. "Although the emperor prohibited the printing of the evangelical confession without his special permission, during the diet six German editions and one in Latin were published. Their inaccuracy and incorrectness induced Melanchthon to prepare an edition to which he added the Apology. Thus originated the so-called 'editio princeps' of the Augustana and the Apology, which was published in the spring of 1531." (Schaff-Herzog) "Melanchthon drafted the ‘Confession’ in both German and Latin using the Torgau, Schwabach, and Marburg Articles. The intention of the German Protestants was to present a single creed. Since they could not all agree on one, several versions were presented to the Diet meeting at Augsburg. Of these, it is the ‘Augsburg Confession’ that is remembered today; the others have long been forgotten. The presentation of the ‘Augsburg Confession’ was probably Melanchthon’s finest hour as a theologian. He had written a theological document that presented a reasonable compromise in the ongoing religious disputes in Germany. Luther himself said that he could never have ‘trod so lightly’ in treating such matters. The ‘Confession’ has come to be the standard Lutheran statement of faith, and was included in the ‘Book of Concord’ of 1580."(Kessler).

Description
1866. Topographies Médicales. Collection of 45 medical theses on medical topography; contact us for complete listing. 3 volumes. 1803-66. 19th-century quarter morocco, marbled boards, slight edgewear. Minor foxing and toning but very good. Manuscript tables of contents in a 19th-century hand in each volume. Interesting and unusual collection of medical theses highlighting an important aspect of early and mid-nineteenth century public health. Incorporating studies of 45 distinct and varied places, this collection could be the basis of significant research projects on comparative medical geography and topography. The practice of medical topography-the study of the association between a region's specific geographical characteristics and the health outcomes of its inhabitants-goes back to Hippocrates's treatise On Airs, Waters and Places (ca. 400 BCE). Prior to the advent of the germ theory of disease in the late 1800s, medical topography formed a significant part of public health investigation, as can be seen in this collection of theses surveying the medico-geographical features of various parts of France and Europe. Medical topography can be seen as an ancestor of the modern disciplines of health geography and medical geography. The theses in the first volume describe the medical topography of Iceland, St. Petersburg (Russia), Belgium, Badajoz (Spain), Pamplona (Spain), Gibraltar, Rome, Patras (Greece), Naples and Corsica; the remaining two volumes contain theses on the medical topography of various parts of France. The earliest dates from 1803, during the time of the Napoleonic Wars; the latest dates from 1866, during the reign of Napoleon III. Several theses discuss the topic of intermittent fever, which is commonly caused by malaria. .

New York, 1961. Very good.. Broadside, 8.5 x 5.5 inches. Remnants of old tape at top and bottom edges, minor soiling and wear. Handbill advertising a "bus brigade" to Washington for the opening of Congress in 1961 in support of Congressman Adam Clayton Powell. Powell would be seated as chairman of the House Committee on Education and Labor starting in 1961, after fifteen years as a Congressman. This flyer continues, "Don't let them unseat Adam! Join the bus brigade leaving Tuesday, January 10th, - 3:00 A.M. (for Opening of Congress) from Alfred E. Isaac Dem. Club 2495 7th Avenue, $8.00 round trip (return same day)". It advertises three locations one can purchase tickets and the event is sponsored by the Committee to Seat Powell. Powell was an important but controversial figure in the Civil Rights movement, helping to desegregate schools and pass other key legislation. He was later accused of misconduct and misuse of funds. We find no record of this handbill in OCLC, though copies may be hiding in various collections of ephemera. Rare and ephemeral.

New York: Youth Committee for Peace and Democracy in the Middle East, 1970. Very good.. [4]pp., on a single folded sheet. Minor discoloration to inner two pages, otherwise very nice. A very rare, if not unrecorded, offprint of an interesting article by notable African-American social activist Bayard Rustin, focused on support for Israel within the Black community. The article was here reprinted from the November 1970 issue of Keeping Posted by the Youth Committee for Peace and Democracy in the Middle East. Rustin's text states that the Black community supports the existence of Israel because, among other rasons stated here, they agree with "the progressive ideals and values which a nation like Israel represents." Rustin also calls upon the youth of America to educate themselves on the "Middle East crisis." Rustin was, at the time he published the present article, executive director of the A. Philip Randolph Institute. No copies of this offprint edition reported in OCLC.

Description
Salford: City Fun Publications, 1981. First edition. Very good plus.. Early issue (January 23, 1981) of this hugely influential Manchester-centric post-punk zine, under the editorial tenure of Carroll and Naylor. John Peel called CITY FUN the most important zine of the period. It is an indispensable reference for the Manchester scene and the bands and labels that grew around it: Joy Division and New Order, The Smiths and The Fall, Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub, etc. Founded by Andy Zero and Martin X in 1978, CITY FUN increasingly expanded its reach beyond the local music scene alone after its takeover by "classic feminist children of punk" (Fletcher) Naylor and Carroll, to cover a wider cultural landscape of film, arts, politics, and sexuality. Among the contributors to this issue are Brian Mills, Steve Wilkinson, Ray Lowry, Janet MacEvoy, Chris Brierly, Neil Hargreaves, and Catherine S. Miles. Includes reviews of a bootleg recording of Joy Division's "Warsaw" followed by an account of a New Order live show: "New Order remain compassionate. New Order remain depressive [...] It was sad, but immensely enjoyable." 12'' x 8.5''. Original pictorial self-wrappers. Offset in black-and-white throughout. 15, [1] pages. Mild edgewear, creasing.

Description
[Kent, Washington]: Edwin Briscoe Memorial Training School, 1920. Very good to near-fine. Sunned.. A remarkable, albeit distressing, survival: a printed badge cut into the shape of a shamrock, with the message "Wear a Shamrock for the Orphans" above an image of the Edwin Briscoe Memorial Training School, a Catholic boarding school for boys. Flags representing the U.S. and Ireland flank the image. Based in Kent, Washington, the School was in operation from 1909 until 1970. Measures approx. 2.75" by 3.25", with small pinhole at head for pinning the badge to clothing. Sadly, it left behind a disturbing legacy; the Catholic orphanage was the site of extensive physical and sexual abuse for the boys, several of whom have filed lawsuits and raised awareness about the horrific since.

Minimal wear to corners, otherwise an excellent copy. Binding tight and square, pages clean, bright, and unmarked. 2022 Hard Cover. 432 pp. Color plates, maps, and drawings throughout text, two folding maps included, decorated fore edge with lettering in Elvish. For the first time ever, a very special edition of the forerunner to The Lord of the Rings, illustrated throughout in color by J.R.R. Tolkien himself and with the complete text printed in two colors. The Silmarillion fills in the background which lies behind the more popular work, and gives the earlier history of Middle-earth, introducing some of the key characters. The Silmarilli were three perfect jewels, fashioned by Feanor, most gifted of the Elves, and within them was imprisoned the last Light of the Two Trees of Valinor. But the first Dark Lord, Morgoth, stole the jewels and set them within his iron crown, guarded in the impenetrable fortress of Angband in the north of Middle-earth. The Silmarillion is the history of the rebellion of Feanor and his kindred against the gods, their exile from Valinor and return to Middle-earth, and their war, hopeless despite all the heroism, against the great Enemy. It is the ancient drama to which the characters in The Lord of the Rings look back, and in whose events some of them such as Elrond and Galadriel took part. The book also includes several shorter works: the Ainulindale, a myth of the Creation, and the Valaquenta, in which the nature and powers of each of the gods is described. The Akallabeth recounts the downfall of the great island kingdom of Numenor at the end of the Second Age, and Of the Rings of Power tells of the great events at the end of the Third Age, as narrated in The Lord of the Rings. Tolkien could not publish The Silmarillion in his lifetime, as it grew with him, so he would leave it to his son, Christopher Tolkien, to edit the work from many manuscripts and bring his father's great vision to publishable form, so completing the literary achievement of a lifetime. This special edition presents anew this seminal first step towards mapping out the posthumous publishing of Middle-earth, and the beginning of an illustrious forty years and more than twenty books celebrating his father's legacy. This definitive new edition includes, by way of an introduction, a letter written by Tolkien in 1951 which provides a brilliant exposition of the earlier Ages, and for the first time in its history is presented with Tolkien's own paintings and drawings, which reveal the breathtaking grandeur and beauty of his vision of the First Age of Middle-earth.

Description
The University Press of Kentucky, (1971). First Edition. Octavo, cloth (hardcover), brown spine label, gilt letters, 354 pp. Fine in a Near-Fine, price-clipped dust jacket. From dust jacket: Critics and historians of French literature have for years accepted Francois de Malherbe as the fountainhead of French classical poetry, believing that he directly or indirectly influenced the production of most of the French poets of the seventeenth century. Those who opposed him blamed him for imposing restrictions on the century, while Boileau’s exultant proclamation of Malherbe as the savior of French poetry has been accepted as the ultimate verdict of the great classicist’s followers. Yet to admire a poet is not necessarily to imitate him, and to oppose him is not necessarily to deny his influence. Until the present study, the extent of Malherbe’s influence has never been fully documented. Mr. Abraham, by examining the prosody of most of the seventeenth-century poets, proves that seldom were Malherbe’s precepts actually followed in practice. In choice of poetic forms, rhymes, rhyme schemes, and language, few even attempted to attain Malherbe’s “classical ideal.” He shows, too, that Malherbe neither initiated the reaction to the sixteenth century poetic nor succeeded in establishing a “school.”
