Description
1944. GOLDFINGER, Erno and Ursula BLACKWELL. Planning your Neighbourhood for Home, for Work, for Play. 20 colored pictorial boards. Folio, 490 x 355 mm., loose, in a new cloth folding box. [London: Air Ministry Directorate of Educational Services, 1944.] A spectacular set of designs by the Hungarian-born architect Erno Goldfinger and his wife Ursula Blackwell, assisted by Martin Cobbett, with cartoons by Sheila Hawkins and landscaping by Peter Shepheard. They were prepared for exhibitions put on by the Army Bureau of Current Affairs and depict plans for the rebuilding of the East End of London after the war. The set is made up as follows: the first plate is the title-page, 2 and 3 contrast village and town life, 4-10 describe what planning means: "Shops, Schools, Work and Recreation within east reach of our home." 9 and 10 are about different types of homes (houses, flats or maisonettes) and the space needed to supply accommodation for different sized families. 11-20 show the site in Shoreditch on which the plans were to be based and how the new changes would impact the site. With pin holes for display in corners. A little rubbing and dusting, one board with small loss to right hand edge, otherwise a very good copy of this rare set.

"Josephine Baker" is printed on front, minor corner crease at top left, otherwise fine. Legendary image from Josephine Baker's sitting with a tiger rug. The unbridled dancer proved to be too risqué even for Jazz Age flapper-dominated America. In Paris she became the talk of the town and socialized with the dignitaries of Europe.

Gay liberation made a noticeable mark on gay life in New York by this time, and two men (at least in the West Village) could feel entirely comfortable walking shirtless and with their arms around each other.

Various. No binding. Near Fine. New York, Los Angeles: Various, [ca. 1940-1952]. Archive of nine, mostly 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) vintage original black-and-white single and double weight silver gelatin photos. Several photos have clippings, ink date stamps and publicity blurbs on the verso. Used for publication. Near fine. Boxer-turned-actor Canada Lee got his big break with the 1936 Federal Theatre Project production of Macbeth as interpreted and directed by Orson Welles. He also became the lead for Welles' 1941 Broadway production of Native Son. He was sought for strong roles in films but his civil rights activism, which started with his association with the Federal Theatre, led to his being blacklisted in the industry. The lack of work and health issues led to his early death at 45. One photo shows Lee with Lionel Hampton and June Richmond at a performance ca. early-1940s. The rest consists of portraits for film and theatre roles for Lifeboat (1944), Body and Soul (1947) and Cry, the Beloved Country (1952). One portrait, date stamped Dec. 1943 and with a newspaper blurb attached, attributes Lee to a play at the Cort Theatre titled South Pacific (this was not the 1949 musical, but a three-act drama with choral music written by Howard Rigsby and Dorothy Heyward and staged by Lee Strasberg).

Various. No binding. Very Good. Np: Various, [1901-1928]. Set of 3 vintage original black-and-white photos: one 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) studio portrait on board; one 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) glossy silver gelatin photo; and one 6 1/2 x 8 1/2 (15 x 20 cm) glossy silver gelatin photo. Overall very good. - Studio style theatrical portrait depicts Duse in her famous role as Francesca da Rimini in Gabriele d'Annunzio's original Italian production of 1901, written just for Elenora by her lover. Information in Italian written on verso. Chipped at left bottom corner and overall soil. - Portrait for her portrayal in GHOSTS and THE LADY FROM THE SEA for New York City performances during Oct. and Nov. 1923. Heavily used for newspaper publication with several clippings adhered to verso. From her finale tour. - Portrait with stamp on verso announcing her final tour, there is a written date of 1928 and is specifically for the Broadway performance of ASHES. As she died in 1924, this photo is most likely from 1923. Minor soiling and rippling at bottom margin. Eleonora Giulia Amalia Duse (1858-1924), often known simply as Duse, was an Italian actress rated by many as the greatest of her time. She performed in many countries, notably in the plays of Gabriele D'Annunzio and Henrik Ibsen. Duse achieved a unique power of conviction and verity on the stage through intense absorption in the character, "eliminating the self" as she put it, and letting the qualities emerge from within, not imposed through artifice. Duse performed her final tour in the United States between 1923 and 1924, which included performances on Broadway and other major American cities. While CENERE [ASHES] is a 1916 film she starred in, her 1923–1924 American tour--her final, as she died in Pittsburgh in April 1924--included roles in THE CLOSED DOOR, GHOSTS and THY WILL BE DONE. [San Francisco]: Adrian Wilson, 1947. First edition. Cover title; 9 sheets ; 31 x 23 cm. Issued within two printed covers. Full title page is on inner cover. The first book by poet James Broughton, and the first book printed by Adrian Wilson. Broughton, who had written some plays that the Wilsons' theatre goup, The Interplayers, had produced, wanted the work printed. The typographer Jack Stauffacher lent Wilson the cuts for the book, which was set by Mackenzie and Harris in Centaur and Arrighi type. Broughton and Wilson worked out the design, along with Pauline Kael, the film critic, who was Broughton's girl friend at the time. The pages were all printed on different colored construction papers. Although the poems are not meant to be read by or to children, Joyce Wilson, then beginning her life-long career at the Laurel Hill Nursery School, engaged her pupils in doing paintings for the covers. In this copy, inscribed by Broughton to his Stanford friend (later president of San Francisco State College) Frank Fenton, "from his oldest living child" the cover painting is finely executed in colored inks and is surely an adult's work - probably Broughton's - not a child's. Small breaks in the spine fold; some mild edge fading. Although WorldCat locates twenty copies of an edition thought to be no more than fifty, most of those derive from a remainder of uncolored copies discovered among Broughton's papers when his archive was sold in the 1970s, and being thus unfinished cannot be considered "complete, as issued

1912. [Women's Rights] F.W. Pethick Lawrence. "Is the English Law Unjust to Women?" The Women's Social and Political Union. No. 55. No date, c. 1912. 2 pages (1 sheet). 10 x 7.5 inches. "The following statement with regard to the position of women under the law provides a complete answer to the assertion frequently made b Anti-Suffragists that 'women have no grievances.'" The essay lists the many ways in which women and girls are mistreated throughout their lives: socially, educationally, economically, and legally. "Finally, women, though fulfilling all the duties of citizenship, are debarred from the parliamentary franchise solely on the ground of sex." Frederick Pethick-Lawrence and his wife Emmeline were members of the WSPU from 1907 until 1912. The WSPU was the most radical suffrage activist group in the UK and was known for its militant (and sometimes violent) tactics. Light creases from handling. 1/4" closed tear along top right edge; 1/2" closed tear along center left edge. At the time that this description is being written, no copies are recorded in American institutions. OCLC search results are at best an estimate and can vary over time. Description
1940. [African American] [Literature] Wright, Richard. Native Son. First Edition. New York: Harper & Brothers Publishers, 1940. 359 pages. Measures 5.75" x 8.25". Bound in full gray cloth, stamped in navy and gold in matching, no dust jacket. This is the true first edition text, but in the later state gray binding. Native Son tells the story of this young black man caught in a downward spiral after he kills a young white woman in a brief moment of panic. Set in Chicago in the 1930s, Richard Wright's powerful novel is an unsparing reflection on the poverty and feelings of hopelessness experienced by people in inner cities across the country and of what it means to be black in America. "Native Son" by Richard Wright has been banned in some places due to its portrayal of racism and violence, as well as its explicit language. Some critics argue that the book's content is not suitable for certain audiences, such as students in schools. However, others argue that the book's depiction of the harsh realities of racism and its impact on individuals is an important part of understanding history and society. The book is tight and clean, with the author's neat name, place on the front end paper: "B.W. Cummings" dated 1940. Some minor foxing to rear end paper. Overall, in very good condition.

Orinda, California: Donna Day Westerman, N.D.. Limited Edition. Stiff wraps. fine. Westerman, Donna Day. Number 16 of 20, tall, thin quarto size, five folded leaves, signed by the artist. Limited edition, number 16 of 20. Donna Day Westerman is a printmaker and painter in the Bay Area of California. [She is] "interested in traditional and historical media — particularly, woodcuts, wood-engravings and egg tempera — used in a contemporary manner. Working from close observation, and occasionally referring to [her] own photographs, [she] conceptually reduce[s] realistic nature to calligraphic or glyph-like notations. A kind of erasure takes place as the visual abundance... is distilled into the essence of the place. Other senses, such as sound and touch often inform the visual... A challenge... has been to capture the powerful ephemeral forms of fog and water in the hard-edged medium of wood... the medium itself determines much of the outcome." (N.B., "Artist's Statement" from web site of the Artist.) The present volume is themed around a "weather story" with abstracted diagrams showing the interconnectedness of the earth; as the Artist says in the colophon, "A large high pressure system settles over the great plain of China bordered by the Himalayas. This high sets up a series of highs and lows that oscillate over the northern Pacific determining the wind direction at the West Coast." ***DESCRIPTION: Original handmade blue-gray paper covered boards, pictorial title strip laid onto upper board, backstrip opens so the accordion style format can be displayed in a connected elongated format, single-panel wood engraving with silk screen overlays, in six colors 4" x 20", Arches 88 paper, 12" x 4" when closed, five folded leaves including title-page and colophon, limited edition, number 16 of 20, signed by Donna Day Westerman. ***CONDITION: A fine copy, no flaws to the paper covers, leaves are bright, rich impression, a fine copy signed and numbered by Donna Day Westerman; acquired by us new directly from the Artist. ***POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ***Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind book we sell. "During the first half of the 20th Century, Joseph Barcroft, KBE, FRS of Cambridge University became a world leader in respiratory physiology. He determined the role of neural stimulation in the oxygen consumption of several organs, established many of the factors that regulate the binding of oxygen to haemoglobin, explored the determinants of a human's acclimatization to high altitude and developed the field of fetal cardiovascular physiology. Chair of the Cambridge Department of Physiology from 1925 to 1937, he served as a consultant and member of many UK governmental committees. During World War I, he led a British research unit exploring the effects of poisonous gases on pulmonary function and related problems. In addition to his almost 300 publications, several of his monographs are considered as classics." – Longo. See: Lawrence D. Description
Paris:: Carrere, 1980., 1980. Vol. III only. 8vo. 631, (1) pp. Illus., index. Printed wrappers. Fine. "Baillaud is a French astronomer born in Toulouse (1885–1977). He invented the "paraboloïde" a precursor of the radar. This instrument made it possible to establish the position of planes without having to see them, using only the sound they produced. The precision of the instrument was such, that it was used during the first World War by the French military, to repel night attacks from German bombers by pointing searchlights at them. This furthermore represented a rare technological superiority for the French. After this remarkable start in the fields of acoustics, he nonetheless decided to abandon this field. The reason being that his professor's own instrument didn't get chosen by the French military, and Rene feared he would have no academic future in this field. He then turned chronometry. He initially worked at the observatories of Nice (1910–1924) and Marseille (1924–1930), while already teaching at the "Ecole d'Ingenieurs de Marseille", before taking a chair as professor at the University of Besancon and becoming director of the Besancon observatory until 1957. During this time he oversees the installation of special clock, in a specially built room 5 meter underneath the observatories' library to maintain constant temperature, allowing the observatory to Join the establishment of a global time network. He is a founding member of the French society of chronometry, and its first chief of staff, creating in 1931 the journal "Annales Francaises de Chronometrie". In order to join the global mapping project "Carte du Ciel" (directed by his brother), he oversees the installation of a specific instrument: "astrographe triple" dedicated to this purpose." – Wikip.
