Description
15/07/1864. A real rarity, the first Lincoln appointment to the Signal Corps for an officer active in Sherman’s Georgia Campaign we have seenOn March 29, 1860, the United States House of Representatives approved the Army appropriations bill for fiscal year 1861, which included the following amendment: ""For the manufacture or purchase of apparatus and equipment for field signals, $2000; and that there be added to the staff of the Army one signal officer, with the rank, pay, and allowance of a major of cavalry, who shall have charge, under the direction of the Secretary of War, of all signal duty, and all books, papers, and apparatus connected therewith."" The United States Senate eventually approved the appropriations bill, over the objections of Jefferson Davis, now Senator from Mississippi, and President James Buchanan signed it into law on June 21, 1860, the date now celebrated as the birthday of the modern U.S. Army Signal Corps. Now armies on the go could report back to their civilian leadership in real time, and those leaders could make decisions without waiting for a messenger on horse. This changed the face of warfare. President Lincoln himself spent significant time in the telegraph office sending and receiving war correspondence. He often walked alone from the White House to the office, and chatted with the operators. As Bates later wrote, “During the Civil War the President spent more of his waking hours in the War Department telegraph office than in any other place, except the White House. While in the Telegraph Office he was comparatively free from official cares, and therefore more apt to disclose his natural traits and disposition than elsewhere under other conditions.”John Quincy Adams first enlisted in 1862 with the 38th Ohio Volunteers. On October 15 of that year he was a quartermaster sergeant with the 10th Ohio Cavalry. After a stint as acting lieutenant, on July 15, 1864, he was appointed by the President Second Lieutenant, to date from March 3, 1863. Adams was actively involved in the Georgia campaign conducted by Gen. William T. Sherman. He was with left wing of the 16th Army Corps on the march to Chattanooga, Tenn. In the Atlanta Campaign he participated in the battles of Resaca, Dallas, Kenesaw Mountain. and Jonesboro. He manned signal corps stations at Kenesaw Mt., and Allatoona.Adams was in the engagements at Port McAllister and Rice Mill station, in the campaign from Savannah through the Carolinas, including battles at Columbia, Bentonville, and Raleigh; and at the surrender of Confederate Gen. Joseph E. Johnston to Sherman on April 26, 1865. Adams was breveted 1st lieutenant for gallant and meritorious service in the Signal Corps at the battle of Allatoona; he was breveted captain for gallant and meritorious services in the Signal Corps at the capture of Fort McAllister and Savannah, and throughout the war. Adams was mustered out August 22, 1865. After the war, he was in the 1st U. S. Cavalry and was in the Indian wars, and finished his career as captain and aide to Gen. O.O. Howard in October 1884. He is listed on the roster of the U.S. Signal Corps in the Civil War.Adams is also a protagonist in one of the most famous telegraph exchanges of the war during the battle near Allatoona. During this battle, legend goes that Sherman signaled to General Corse and his men to ""hold the fort"", a phrase that inspired the later popular religious hymn entitled Hold the Fort by Chicago evangelist Philip P. Bliss, which featured the chorus, 'Hold the fort, for I am coming,’ which then became a common expression. We still use ""hold down the fort"" today. Adams was the signal officer who received that message, or rather a variant, as Sherman did not use that exact phrase, though captured the sentiment. This is President Lincoln’s appointment of Adams as Second Lieutenant. Document signed, Washington, July 15, 1864, naming Adams ""Second Lieutenant in the Signal Corps,"" dating from the third of March, 1863.This document is a real rarity, as we have never before seen a Lincoln appointment to the Signal Corps for an officer active in Sherman’s March to the Sea. Moreover, Lincoln Signal Corps appointments are themselves uncommon, this being our first. It was acquired from the Adams descendants and has never been offered for sale before.

Document signed, Washington, January 8, 1870, naming Adams “First Lieutenant in the First Regiment of Cavalry”, to rank as such from the fourteenth of September, 1869. The document is countersigned by William Belknap as Secretary of War.In 1866, the 1st Cavalry Division was sent west to California and other western states, and it served during the Indian Wars in the west. In June 1884, while Adams was still serving with the regiment, it was transferred to the Department of Dakota. In their new assignment, the troops were assigned to various forts which had been established during the Indian wars to subjugate the Sioux, Cheyenne Crow, and other Native Americans.

His treatise reflects the 18th-century interest in understanding the nature of foods, their effects on the body, and the principles guiding their selection and consumption. It aligns with the broader tradition of literature that explored the relationship between diet and health during this period. Minor marginal worm track affecting last two leaves of text. Eighteenth century calf, covers ruled in gilt. Rebacked; spine with five raised bands, ruled in gilt, red morocco label lettered in gilt. Corners a little rubbed. [N.p., likely Harlem, 1970. Good.. Illustrated broadside, 11 x 8.5 inches. Old folds, minor chipping and several old tape repairs to edges, moderate toning, light soiling. An undated but certainly early flyer advertising a "Solemn March" in celebration of Malcolm X Commemoration Day in Harlem in the late-1960s. The work includes a hand-drawn portrait of Malcolm X at lower left, with a long list of over twenty sponsors for the march printed at right. Malcolm is identified in two locations by his Muslim name, El Haji Malik El Shabazz, and honored as "The Prince of Our Black Captive Non-Self Governing People." The sponsors include the NAACP, Yoruba Temple, CORE, Organization of Afro-American Unity, Urban League, SNCC, Negro Labor Committee, Harlem Defense Council, United African Nationalists Movements, the World Federation of African People, Inc., and more. The flyer was designed by Art Scott and prepared by Awareness Advertising. The march was scheduled on February 20, to begin at the corner of 110th Street and Lenox Avenue in Harlem. A highly-ephemeral handbill celebrating the memory of Malcolm X; we could find no other examples of this attractive flyer anywhere.

Description
[New York Superior Court of New York, 1833.] First edition. Printed paper self-wrappers. . 5 x 8 in. . Toning to first and last leaf at spine. Splitting at spine. Contemporary ink ownership signature to top margin of first page. Some foxing and dustsoiling. A good copy of a fragile and uncommon item. Mary Carew and her sister Nancy van Haun were employed as servants in the home of Silas E. Burrows, "an eminent and wealthy merchant." Van Haun was the plaintiff in the case, but it was Carew whose "illicit amours" with Burrows in the summer of 1833 resulted in her pregnancy. During the trial, it was revealed that Burrows had refused to financially support Carew during her pregnancy, and that he had previously broken off an engagement to Carew's younger sister Henrietta. The case was sensational, and, on the day of the trial, the courtroom was packed with onlookers: "Perhaps on no similar occasion in this country has such an immense number of persons assembled, as were gathered together on this occasion…[T]here were not less than three thousand persons in court," (p. 20). Though throngs of people were also present to hear the verdict the day after the trial concluded, the court could not reach a conclusion and a re-trial was scheduled.

She knew French, Italian, Spanish, German, Arabic, Persian, Greek, Latin, Hebrew, some Syriac, and Erse, and was studied in music, mathematics, and astronomy. Henrietta Maria Bowdler, her great friend, introduced her to Elizabeth Hamilton, who greatly admired her. Hannah More praised her in Coelebs in Search of a Wife (1804). In her short life, she completed a translation of Job, and translated F. G. Klopstock's memoirs for publication. This posthumous work proved very popular, going through sixteen editions before 1815.

Description
Philadelphia: Published by the Author, 1817. 30pp. Disbound, title and last leaf moderately foxed. Contemporary ink number '5' touches a few letters in the title. Good to Good+. Several printings issued in this year-- American Imprints lists this January 30, 1817, printing with 28 pages, suggesting some bibliographical confusion. Bemoaning "the morbid state of manufactures, trade, commerce, and industry," Carey criticizes the Banks, which could, in his view, "in one week restore credit and confidence-- rescue numbers from impending ruin." Carey's pamphlet-- addressed to the mass of the American people who, in their hearts, are "a nation of politicians" with little knowledge of Banking-- denounces Banks for their "single eye directed to large dividends" instead of acting in the public interest; for their "immoderate and abrupt loans," their "abrupt and precipitate curtailments of discounts" followed by "immoderate extensions;" and for a variety of other mismanagements which he describes in detail. 111 Eberstadt 504. Verdier claims that his certificates of registered debt, owed by the United States to him, "were erroneously paid to Robert Morris." Verdier was awarded the certificates for services rendered in the Revolution as a Captain in Colonel Armand's legion. The Committee, examining the supporting documentation printed here, concludes that Verdier is correct and that Morris ought not to have converted the certificates. Moreover, "the United States should seek their remedy upon the bond executed for their indemnity by the said Robert Morris." Morris vigorously proclaims his lack of culpability. Evans 38842. Very good plus.
Description
Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1973. First printing. Very good plus.. First Limited Paperback Edition of Vickery's study of Frazer, owned and signed by novelist David Markson, subsequently from the library of Tom Verlaine. Following Markson's death in 2010, the bulk of his private library found its way to The Strand, and from there to myriad buyers much like the author himself - an avid buyer but not keeper of books, who had in life already sold off "as many as 400 at a time throughout the years." Verlaine, once a Strand employee and eulogized as the bookstore's best customer, was a master at finding "little gems for a dollar" on the book carts - likely including this study of a study of myth and ritual. A scarce record of the intersection between two cult icons and great book buyers of the twentieth century. 9'' x 6''. Original green wrappers. 435, [1] pages. Signature of David Markson on front free endpaper; a few marginal check-marks scattered throughout. Though no additional provenance markings, this copy subsequently from the library of Tom Verlaine. Light edgewear, sunning to spine and a bit to top edge.

Description
Berkeley/Oakland: TOCSIN Inc. / Charles Fox, 1964. Newsletter. Singleton issue of the weekly, no photos this number. As with other numbers presswork is on semi-glazed alkaline paperstock, folded twice for mailing, slight edgewear, a hint of toning. Good clean copy unmarked except for the mailing address. Subjects touched on are Koreanization of Vietnam, Carlton Goodlett's magnificent press statement, a variety of the local CPUSA are getting federal jobs and benign press attention, and more, including a child in a US Army hospital needing get-well cards. The Goodlett material quotes 175 words of his public statement ("We're Forging a Technique") and cites a dozen or so of his left credentials. The newsletter was begun in June 1961 to expose the Red conspiracy behind the burgeoning student movement and the greater New Left, particularly in the San Francisco Bay Area and at UC Berkeley, from Free Speech Movement to anti-Vietnam War activism and Black Power struggles of later years. Tocsin delved into its mission passionately, illustrating many issues with B&W surveillance photos taken on the site of rallies or teach-ins, naming names and tracing real or imagined Communist lineages, family connections, factional shifts, etc. Despite its blatant slant, no comparably systemic chronicle of local activists and their associations is available in Left publications from the period.
