Very good plus.
Description
(Paris): (Contact Editions / Three Mountains Press), 1925. First printing. Very good plus.. First edition, in the rare original wrappers, of Stein's magnum opus, an influential Modernist epic. A metafictional account of the Hersland and Dehning families, Stein's AMERICANS was originally written (as the cover notes) in the first decade of the twentieth century. Told in Stein's characteristically repetitive style, the book was too radical for readers at the time, and wasn't published in any form until almost twenty years later when Ford Madox Ford brought portions out in TRANSATLANTIC REVIEW in 1924. The following year Robert McAlmon's legendary modernist press published this edition which, like most Contact productions, is notoriously fragile. Surviving copies are almost ubiquitously found rebound, and copies in the original wrappers, as here, are quite rare. A lovely copy of one of the founding texts of Modernism, which Stein herself rightly compared to Joyce's ULYSSES and Proust's À la recherche du temps perdu. 9.5'' x 7.5''. Original orange printed wrappers. One of 400 copies (with another 100 copies reserved for the US market). [4], 926, [2] pages. First and last gatherings professionally resewn/repaired. Some toning to pages. Wrappers with some mild soil, edgwear.

Description
[Various locations in and around Chicago, Il: likely early November, 1960. Very good plus.. Title leaf, plus [25] leaves, illustrated with forty-seven silver gelatin photographs, pasted one per leaf or page, all about 5.5 x 7.5 inches, plus five loose images (two duplicates and three other images not pasted in). Square quarto. Contemporary tan cloth custom photograph album, metal-hinged spine, front cover printed with title reading, "ELECTION 1960." Minor wear and soiling to album. Light occasional thumb-soiling to album leaves, ownership signature reading, "G. Robert Hillman" on title leaf. Photographs in excellent condition. An utterly charming vernacular photograph album assembled during the seminal Presidential Election of 1960, one of the closest presidential elections in United States history, which pitted Vice President Richard Nixon against the junior Senator from Massachusetts, John F. Kennedy. The album features about fifty original photographs on the campaign trail in Illinois, beginning with about a dozen-and-a-half images of Richard Nixon and his local supporters. The photographs capture various angles of Nixon during his stump speech, a young boy waving an "I'm for Nixon" handmade sign, another young boy with a Nixon button on his coat, crowd scenes, a large campaign sign for Nixon-Lodge outside a local store, and more. One image featuring a mixed crowd of Nixon and Kennedy supporters transitions into the next section of photographs, which concentrates on JFK's campaign. The first image in this section is a closeup of a "Kennedy for President" hat, followed by four images of JFK's campaign manager Robert Kennedy making a speech, three images of Eleanor Roosevelt stumping for Kennedy, five images of Lyndon Johnson and his airplane, numerous shots of Kennedy supporters, and crowd shots outside Chicago Blackhawks stadium. The photographs then feature the inside of Chicago Auditorium, where the first three images depict John F. Kennedy - the first shaking hands with Chicago's longtime Mayor Richard Daley and two during his speech (likely his speech of November 4, 1960 - just four days before Election Day). The final three images show supporters of both candidates. The 1960 United States Presidential Election was a watershed moment for the campaign politics of the country. Senator Kennedy won the election with a clear Electoral College margin of 303 to 219. However, Vice President Nixon won three more states than Kennedy, and lost the popular vote only by about 110,000 votes out of more than 68 million votes cast. The election set the course for most of the remainder of the 1960s, but left Nixon soured and suspicious that the election had been stolen from him - a feeling he never let go, and one with ominous echoes today. As indicated in the present album, the 1960 presidential election was passionate on both sides, with each candidate drawing large, enthusiastic crowds for their appearances. The signature on the title leaf of the present album likely identifies the compiler. G. Robert Hillman is a Senior Editor for Politico. Hillman was born in Peoria and grew up on a farm near Flanagan, Illinois, about a hundred miles from Chicago. He went to college at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and began his career at Chicago Today and the Chicago Sun-Times. Hillman would have been in middle school during the 1960 election campaign, not too precocious for a young man obsessed with politics, especially during one of the most heated and media-intensive campaigns of the 20th century.

Description
Oroville, Ca, 1900. Very good.. Three letters, [13]pp. total on seven lined sheets. Previously folded. Minor wear and toning. An engaging group of three letters from a mining engineer named Jack in Oroville, California, to his partner and perhaps brother Eric that discuss the development of their investments in an area that saw a rapid growth in dredge mining around the turn of the 20th century. Our correspondent was working out a new mechanical process for gold mining on a promising site. However, his partner and addressee had given power of attorney to an investor named Wyckoff who is described as "a snoty little devil" who "knows no more about a mine or my affairs than a jack rabbit," but was starving the operation of cash while delivering a steady stream of insults. At one point Wyckoff, "Left me without cash for ten days when we had nothing but potatoes to feed in the camp." The dastardly money man is also suspected of trying to steal the proprietary process, which had already yielded fruit in Mexico. If that weren't bad enough, the author was in poor health -- passing blood, suffering from continuous headaches, and feeling faint. And yet, as with any mining venture, a fortune was just around the corner: "I will make you money in the mine and prove the process, so we can get bigger mines. Everybody is gold-crazy over here." Good content concerning a region of California that saw significant commercial mining development during the late-19th and early 20th centuries.

Description
1890. [Women Employment] Original vintage photograph of a large group of women seamstresses and tailors at their sewing machines in a factory setting. circa 1890. Sepia. Approximately 5" x 8" with back photographer mat. Rows and rows of women sitting in front of sewing machines gaze into the camera. While single women faced barriers to employment, wives and mothers confronted prejudice that put their jobs at risk after marriage and childbirth. As women took advantage of expanded access to jobs with the advent of factory lines, a new push was made for job security and upward mobility. The women's employment movement first picked up traction in the industrial revolution, as women fought to secure fair hours and wages for female factory workers; In the late 1870s and 80s, women's organizations lobbied for safe conditions and job protection for married women and mothers; and through the 20th century expansion of skilled female labor including civil service, publishing, and medicine. Some of the most radical labor organizing in the West happened thanks to women in the textiles industry, as women fought to secure prosperity and safety under new work conditions. A beautiful photograph of the spirited women, young and old, at the front lines of the changing workplace. Ref:Baxandall, "America's Working Women" p. 94-96, 158. Self-published history of the much beloved, and now defunct, Manti Mormon Miracle Pageant, colloquially known as the 'Manti Pageant'. At its height, 15,000 people a night (over two weeks - usually in June) would watch the lavish production. I attended once and it was really bonkers.
