A MEDIEVAL ILLUMINATED VELLUM MANUSCRIPT LEAF WITH A BREATHTAKING MINIATURE OF THE CRUCIFIXION, FROM A BOOK OF HOURS IN FRENCH
Seller
Phillip J. Pirages Fine Books and Medieval Manuscripts (United States)
Description
Metz, ca. 1440. Leaf: 162 x 124 mm. (6 3/8 x 4 7/8"). Frame: 308 x 258 mm. (12 1/8 x 10 1/8"). Single column, three lines of text under the miniature (obverse with 18 ruled lines, five of which contain text), in a gothic book hand. Attractively matted and framed. Recto with one three-line initial in gold on pink and blue ground, WITH A LARGE MINIATURE OF THE CRUCIFIXION WASHED IN BLUE, Christ on a painted gold cross, flanked by two thieves on painted gold crosses, surrounded by throngs of people including the Virgin, St. John, Mary Magdalene, and numerous soldiers, all in an arched gold frame inside a three-sided painted and gilt baguette and a FULL BORDER of colorful vine sprays and flowers inhabited by a peacock. See: "The Jeanne Miles Blacburn Collection of Manuscript Illuminations" nos. 29-38; Avril & Reynaud, pp. 182 & 190. Minor soiling/browning right at inner edge (away from border and image), otherwise IN VERY FINE CONDITION, THE MINIATURE REMARKABLY WELL PRESERVED, WITHOUT ANY LOSS OF PAINT. This stunning miniature with its memorable nocturnal scene comes from a very fine Book of Hours probably executed by Henri d'Orquevaulz (or d'Orquevaulx) or a member of his workshop. D'Oquevaulz was active during the second quarter of the 15th century in Metz, the cultural and commercial capital of Lorraine during the period, and the center of a growing book trade. According to the catalogue of the Jeanne Miles Blackburn Collection in the Cleveland Museum of Art, which owns 10 leaves from the original manuscript, the parent Book of Hours can be localized based on the Lorraine dialect found in the French text on some of the leaves (including the present example), and because the calendar singled out two bishop-saints of Metz (Clement and Arnoul). Although little is known about d'Orquevaulz, his dated signature in the colophon of a Livy manuscript that he illuminated for an alderman of Metz indicates that he was active in that city in 1440. Artistic affinities with northern European styles make it possible that d'Orquevaulz had emigrated from the Netherlands or Germany to Lorraine; another possibility, one that Avril and Renaud suggest, is that the master himself was from Metz, but that he had German associates, perhaps from the Rhineland area. According to these two scholars, the painter's use of large flat areas of colors is more typical of the Rhineland, the Netherlands, or Bohemia than of France; in any case, they praise his "exquisite color harmonies." The artist has outdone himself in the present miniature, rising to the height of pathos and making it one of the most extraordinary leaves we have ever offered for sale. In contrast to the bright colors used in Books of Hours even to depict the most serious scenes, the present leaf presents a remarkable visual nocturne, with the figures and buildings painted in the same shades of blue as the sky, suggesting that heaven itself is darkening at the death of Christ. Mary Magdalen kneels at the foot of the cross, while St. John supports the devastated Virgin as a soldier pierces the Savior's side with a lance. The miniature is crowded with figures (we see well-defined faces of no fewer than 18 persons and two horses), but the artist has not lost his dramatic focus, as Christ on his cross of brushed gold dominates the scene. In choosing to make this a darkened composition, the artist has risked obscuring detail, but his skill has been equal to his concept here, as he has used a diluted blue paint that allows for a very successful delineation in various shades, almost like grisaille (this technique, not incidentally, has prevented the cracking and erosion so commonly seen with the normal thick applications of typical cobalt blue). The result of the decision to show the world in eclipse at Christ's death is to heighten and universalize the drama here to such an extent that the scene leaves a powerful and lasting impression. The text on this leaf is entirely in French in rhyming verse. Roughly it translates as: "Jesus on the cross did hang, / And took upon himself our sins, / Gave to humankind redemption, / Rendered up his soul to God. / The sunshine lost its glowing light, / The earth did tremble and did crack, / Grieving for the bitter death / Suffered by the son of God." Although the original Book of Hours was dismembered some time in the 20th century, extant leaves suggest that its visual program was much bigger than usual, and probably the result of an important commission by a wealthy patron--something likely to be painted by one of the chief artists in the workshop. Illuminated manuscripts from Metz--let alone examples of this quality--are uncommonly seen on the market..

Description
Bingii ad Rhenum: G. C. Voigt, 1791. First quarto edition. Editio omnium novissima, notis et animadversionibus, quoad historiam et dissertationem [sic] Novi Testamenti, aucta ad castigationem et illustrationem opinionum quorumdam [sic] auctoris, opera et studio Constantini Roncaglia ... Quibus accedunt, praeter animadversiones a P. Joanne Dominico Mansi ... in 2. Lucensi editione inserta [sic], aliae insuper ejusdem auctoris noviter elucubratae. Full mottle calf, raised bands, gilt decorated compartments, morocco labels, marbled endpapers, all edges red. Spines and boards rubbed and scuffed, worn at extremities, heads and heels of a few volumes chipped, calf occasionally darkened or brittle mainly on spines, library call numbers to lower compartments mostly removed, seminary book plate to front pastedowns, occasional bookseller's ticket, bindings tight, some scattered foxing otherwise leaves clean and unmarked. A valuable set.. Sm. 4to.(25 cm). Noel Alexandre, or Alexander Natalis (1639-1724), was a French historian and theologian, of the Order of St. Dominic who studied philosophy and theology in the convent of Saint Jacques, Paris, where he taught for twelve years, obtained the licentiate from the Sorbonne, and in 1675, the doctorate, and was urged to write a complete history of the church, the first volume appearing in 1677. “His directness and conciseness, his critical acumen, and his manner of viewing history and dividing it into special studies (then quite original, although now common enough) won for him the approbation of the learned. The first volumes of the history brought him letters of commendation and praise from Pope Innocent XI and many cardinals, but later volumes gave offense at Rome because of the author's Gallicism, and Innocent XI finally forbade the faithful to read ...it," Cath.Ency. Alexandre corrected the work in the third edition. Constantino Roncaglia brought out a sixth edition, unaltered, but with the addition of paragraphs and dissertations correcting the most offensive statements. The work was thus removed from the Index by Pope Benedict XIII. The edition offered here is the best and most complete, edited by Giovan Domenico Mansi who added many explanatory notes. An anonymous writer in two supplementary volumes (also included here) carried the history into the eighteenth century, and added various dissertations from other historians. The work thus completed appeared at Venice in 1778, in eleven folio volumes, and at Bingen, 1785-91, in twenty volumes. Brunet I, 169.

Description
New York: John C. Riker, 1860. Front cover detached. The back strip to the album is damage, and mostly missing, as a result the binding is also damaged. There leather covers are damaged, mostly due to rubbing. Front cover mostly detached. Interior pages are toned and soiled due to age.. A friendship album of Addie A. Allen who most likely lived in Connecticut as many of the entries note Connecticut towns in the closing. The album itself dates from 1858-1864, with the bulk of the entries dated between 1858-1860. The majority of the material from 1862-1864 are after the fact notes added to the journal, presumably by Addie, when one of her classmates died. There are entries from 40 different individuals, predominantly female. While many of then entries under a page, several are lengthy entries, almost taking the forms of letters as the author's reminisce over their friendship with Addie and wish her well in her future endeavors. Along side the entries are three dried and pressed plants specimens, which are labeled: moss and a flower from California, and a fern from India. Additionally there is a piece of red silk sewn into the journal and is labeled as a piece of the battle flag of the 2nd Connecticut Artillery. The last item of note within the album is a lock of hair from Joseph R. Toy who volunteered for the Union Army during the Civil War, but died of typhoid and malaria at a hospital near New Orleans, LA in 1861. He wrote what appears to be an original poem in the album. An excerpt of that poem as well as several other entries is provided below. "So here where love and friendship, place The offering which the heart holds dear, I turn; my humble name to trace, And pay my willing tribute here.- Henceforth let fortune frown, or smile, Let skies be clear or clouds attend, My soul shall not rest unmoved the while Content that thou has called me friend." - Joseph R. Toy, Simsbury, CT, June 9th, 1860 "Addie dear, if in after years we should be forced to speak the parting word, let us not forget the days that have flown and if not permitted to meet again on this earth may we meet in Heaven when there is no more parting." - Ellen Kimball, Avon CT May 20, 1858 "What shall I wish you more than has been wished, for should all the good wishes herein expelled ever be realized, your years would out number the sand upon the sea-shore. Friends would ever be around you, your life would be one of undisturbed joy- no sorrow could ever come near. But Addie this cannot always be. Death will come. Friends may desert, then have your heats affection so fired upon heavenly things, that when the hour of trail comes as come it must, you shall not falter. And when you stand upon the bank of that river, which all must one day cross, may you fearlessly plunge beneath its dark waves, knowing you have a friend in Heaven." - Fannie Albert, her teacher, Avon, CT, February 28, 1859 Finally there is a single unattached manuscript page titled "in my own Album" a verse copied from "Rosamund Gray by Charles Lamb, 1798. Brown stamped leather covers. The decorative stamping on the covers forms a border. The stamped image on both the front and back covers is gilded, and is the same image of bird with foliage in the background. The front cover has the words 'The Token Album', which are gilded as well. The pages are gilt edge, and while the majority of the interior pages are white, there are a few colored pages. Additionally there are 6 black and white engravings placed throughout the notebook. The album is mostly filled out. Measures 7 3/4" x 6" This album was written predominantly before the Civil War, however the war crept in, in the form of her notes on the deaths of three (3) men while serving in the war Toy 1861 - New Orleans Henry 1863 - Alexandria Hospital Eugene V. Description
Oxford: for the author, 1876. FIRST EDITION, FIRST ISSUE. Text printed within double borders on E. Towgood’s cream-laid large post fine paper, as watermarked. Issued without wrappers; other than some minor stain on the inner edge of the fourth (blank) page, an excellent copy. First edition, first issue, with “Dear Child” on the second page and “gray-headed” and “Righteousness shall arise” on the third page. Williams at one time called this is “the rarest of the Carroll items with the exception perhaps of the first issue of the first edition of Alice in Wonderland. He was apparently referring to this first printing of Easter greeting. Copies were intended to be included with Hunting of the Snark and other books but Carroll decided to both distribute them to friends as well as sell them separately. This short pamphlet is a delightful and personal letter to his young fans reminding them that each day is new and worth looking forward while leaving behind the dreams of the past night.
