Description
1842. GRANDVILLE, J.J. Scènes de la vie privée et publique des animaux. Two volumes. [8], 386, [6]; [4], 390, [6] pp., with 201 engraved plates and 120 vignettes illustrating the text. Large 8vo, 261 x 180 mm., uniformly bound in contemporary black half morocco. Paris: Hetzel et Paulin: 1842-1844. A splendid copy of a Grandville masterpiece, accompanied by two original watercolours by Grandville and a long autograph letter from the publisher, Hetzel. A fantastic example of anthropomorphic illustration and an important precursor of surrealism. These illustrations represent some of Grandville's most memorable creations. Many of the plates are of single figures, but there are also satirical scenes of everyday life, monsters, animals looking at politicians caged at the zoo, etc. The texts contained herein were written by such notable authors as Balzac, Charles Nodier, George Sand, Louis Viardot and even J. Hetzel, the publisher (under the pseudonym of P.J. Stahl). Hetzel was the motivating force behind this work, which he undertook in order to "give words to Grandville's marvellous animals, and to join our pen with his pencil, thereby coming to his assistance in criticizing the aberrations of our epoch, and by preference among these aberrations, those which are of every period and every country." Gordon N. Ray writes: "Through Grandville's animals, Hetzel and his colleagues offered a witty and telling commentary on contemporary politics and personalities." Some slight edge wear, one of the drawings with spotting, else fine. PROVENANCE: Jacques Crepineau, with his bookplate. Ray 194. Carteret III, 552-59. Rebeyrat, Catalogue bibliographique et bibliophilique in: J.J. Grandville (1985), pp. 289-90.

Description
London: Hutchinson, 1971. First edition. Fine. A Fine presentation copy, inscribed by the author on the verso of the half-title "To/Sir Dudley/with warmest regards/Freddie Forsyth/15.11.71." Octavo (8 3/8 x 5 3/16 inches; 213 x 132 mm.). [vi], 358 pp. Pictorially bound likely by Sangorski & Sutcliffe (unsigned), ca. 1980 in full red, blue, black and white oasis morocco, front cover with black morocco onlays and silver rule depicting a marksman and crosshairs, smooth spine lettered in silver, all edges silver, red, blue and white head- and tail bands, patterned red and black end-papers, original dust-jacket preserved at end. Although the binding is unsigned it was specially commissioned by a collector who always used S & S. Housed in the original full black morocco slipcase. The Day of the Jackal is a griping political thriller based on the far-right paramilitary group OAS's (Organisation armée secrete) assassination attempt against French president Charles de Gaulle in response to his granting Algerian independence. Journalist Frederick Forsyth's 1962 reporting from the scene inspired the novel, which follows the codenamed assassin "Jackal" as he attempts to take de Gaulle's life. Contemporary reviews praised its grittiness as making "The Manchurian Candidate and The Spy Who Came in From the Cold seem like Hardy Boy mysteries" (New York Times). Forsyth wrote with fervor, completing the book within 35 days (BBC). It would be adapted into a 1973 film by Fred Zinneman with Edward Fox in the lead. Yaakov; Greenfieldt, 231. Fine.

Description
New York: Cosmopolitan, 1931. First edition. One of 250 signed copies. Finely bound by Sangorski and Sutcliffe. Half morocco with gilt on spine and boards. Marbled endpapers. In all, a lovely copy of this important post-WWI novel. A prolific novelist and short story writer, Hurst's work was highly popular in the years after World War I. "Back Street is one of her two best remembered novels. The story of a woman who devoted her life to being the mistress of a married man, it was twice adapted into film, first in 1941 and then again in 1961" (St. Claire-Jackson). Ideas about the social expectations placed on women in a modern world -- and how women's race and religion affected their social standing -- shaped all of Hurst's works. "She wrote of immigrants and shop girls, love, drama, and trauma" (Kroeger).

Description
New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1981. First printing. Fine in very good plus jacket.. Inscribed first edition of this fourth novel by the Nobel prize-winning author, inscribed by Morrison in the year of publication to "dear friend" and fellow Random House editor Bertha Krantz. An interesting association of this multi-national love story, inscribed to Bertha "Bert" Krantz, copy-editor at Random House where Morrison famously worked from 1967-1983 (and broke barriers by becoming the first Black fiction editor for the company). During her time as an editor, Morrison would acquire and cultivate talented Black writers amidst an overwhelmingly white literary landscape. Said Morrison: "I didn't go to anything. I didn't join anything. But I could make sure there was a published record of those who did march and put themselves on the line." Krantz herself spent 34 years at Random House, where she worked on several of Cormac McCarthy's novels ("Thank you for your corrections" - the author would write in a warm letter to Krantz - "I hope you understand that they are always welcome.") and, perhaps most notably, copyedited Ayn Rand's 1957 behemoth, ATLAS SHRUGGED. Substantive Morrison associations are decidedly scarce in the market - a desirable copy. 8.25'' x 5.75''. Original cream cloth boards, stamped in gilt to front board and spine. In original unclipped ($11.95) color pictorial jacket designed by R.D. Scudellari. Mackine deckle fore-edge. Dark blue topstain. [10], 306 pages. Inscribed by Morrison in brown on front fly-leaf: "To Bert / Dear friend and colleague / Toni / 3.18.81." Jacket with light edgewear and rubbing, faintest toning. Crisp, clean.

Description
U.S. General. Head of all US Forces during the Vietnam War. Great content. Headed: "Gen. William Westmoreland - Commander of U.S. forces in Vietnam - CNN Interview." In part: "We had in fact replaced the French in that regard -- and we had advisers down to battalion level within the Vietnamese military structure. The problem at that time was not an invasion of the area by the North Vietnamese, but it was the erosion of the effectiveness of government brought about by the so-called "VC" -- the Viet Cong. It was not open warfare ... At the outset, the President made the statement that he would not geographically broaden the war, and that meant that military actions were confined to the territory of South Vietnam. The enemy was not operating under such restraints,...That gave the enemy a sanctuary... We were winning on the battlefield, but whether we were winning strategically is another matter..." Signed in black ink " W. Westmoreland". Great content and in excellent condition.
