Description
London: [Printed by] George Bishop, Ralph Newberie and Robert Barker, 1599-1600. Second Edition, Second State (title page with "yeres" instead of "years" and no mention of the Cadiz victory) of first two volumes; FIRST EDITION of third volume. 282 x 190 mm. (11 1/8 x 7 1/2"). Vol. I with the suppressed section on the 1596 Voyage to Cadiz present as a reprint issued ca. 1720 (per ESTC), pages numbered 607-20. Three volumes.. Excellent blind-tooled diced russia, ca. 1800, expertly and attractively rebacked with matching calf, raised bands, spine panels gilt with central patera, gilt lettering, with author's name spelled "Hacklyt, marbled endpapers, leather hinges, edges speckled. Without the map in volume III, as usual. Church 322; Hill Collection, p. 131-32; Pforzheimer 443; PMM 105 (for the first edition of 1589); Sabin 29595; STC 12626; ESTC S106744. Extremities with very minor rubbing, hinge exposed after **2 (but everything tight), text washed and pressed (with title pages rather limp and gray), first quire of volume I and first two leaves of second quire tipped onto front flyleaf, titles and other early leaves with well-executed repair at gutter (no loss of text), intermittent browning due to paper quality, more pronounced on a dozen or so quires, occasional ink stains or small paper repairs, (repair to final leaf of second volume affecting parts of perhaps a half dozen words of text on each side), a score of openings with chalk-like residue. The text not without issues, but a voluminous work that has still held up well under use, and the sturdy restored binding making an attractive appearance on the shelf. This is the "definitive edition," in Hill's words, of "the most complete collection of voyages and discoveries, by land as well as by sea, and of the nautical achievements of the Elizabethans." First printed in 1789, and expanded here to more than 1,700,000 words, "Principal Navigations" records some of the most significant voyages of the age--including Drake's circumnavigation of the world--and encourages further adventures, especially in service of the expansion of British maritime enterprise and the establishment of colonies in the New World. It was admired by Hakluyt's contemporaries and remains relevant today: according to Britannica, "its scholarship and comprehensiveness transcended all geographical literature to date," and DNB notes that it "continues to be an invaluable source for narratives not otherwise preserved." Sabin says simply that "it is difficult to overrate the importance and value of this extraordinary collection of voyages." Fascinated by geography and mariners from childhood, Hakluyt (1552? - 1616) began while a student at Oxford to collect and read all the extant accounts of voyages he could find. He translated many reports into English himself, sought out the acquaintance of explorers like Francis Drake and Walter Raleigh, and corresponded with Continental geographers Abraham Ortelius and Gerardus Mercator. "Principal Navigations" is notable for Hakluyt's obsession with accuracy, his insistence on first-hand accounts, and his careful and logical organization of the contents into three parts by geographical region. The work begins with English travels to India, the Levant, and Southeast Asia, then turns to Africa, including Egypt and the Cape of Good Hope. The second section looks to the areas north and northeast of Britain: Lapland, Russia, the Caspian Sea region, and Tartary. The third and final part is concerned with Hakluyt's great enthusiasm: "the English valiant attempts in searching almost all the corners of the vaste and new world of America." An addition to our second edition is an account of the English navy's victory, led by the Earl of Essex, over the Spanish Armada at Cadiz. This portion of 14 pages in vol. I was removed in 1599, when Essex fell out of favor with Elizabeth, and is not infrequently missing (even in copies selling for very substantial sums). As is infrequently the case, this censored text has been restored to our copy in the form of a reprint issued ca. 1720. As usual, the Molyneux-Wright world map is lacking from our set. According to Pforzheimer, "it is generally allowed that the map which belongs in that third volume, only occasionally found, was not issued with all copies." Auction records indicate that this map is indeed scarce: we could find only one set with it present, that copy selling in 2021 for £448,950. Hakluyt's great work is not a rare book, but to be able to obtain the present copy--attractively and uniformly bound, entirely complete, and in appealing condition--for the price asked represents an uncommon opportunity..

Description
[London:] 2015 One of seventeen numbered copies. . Green and yellow-gold morocco illustrated with a yellow-dotted vine pattern and an engraved copper leaf inlay that has been oxydised to give it a dark coloring. The artist notes that each binding in this edition is slightly different. However, two constant themes connect them all - a predominance of green, and leaves that have been cut out of copper, engraved, then oxydised to make them dark; pages are joined together and, for strength, the book is sewn on linen tapes laced into multi-layer boards; the endbands are of pierced leather in colors that reflect those used on the boards. The book comes in a green cloth box with a black-lettered paper label. Large, thick quarto. Illustrated with prints and photographic reproductions; there is frequent use of lino cut with etching in the prints, and they painted with watercolor, gouache, acrylic or colored ink. The paper is mould-made Velin Arches. Other papers are colored Bugra Butten, blue and green rag paper, Karuki grass, Corn hair, and Khadi papers. Awagami Mingeishi with a printed image is used for some endpapers. The principal typefaces are Caslon, Roman Compressed, Verona, and Bembo, set by hand and printed letterpress in black colors. A fine copy. This book is a book of garden moments. It is neither a history, nor a story of specific gardens; not a gardening manual, or account of plants, designers, gardeners...it contains elements of all these, laying out a perspective of shapes, influences and preferences occurring when nature is organised and the companionship of the earth is considered. Under six titles a collection of garden are presented: Gardens of Ancient Egypt; Early Persian Gardens; Illusion and Reality in Roman Gardens; Giardino Giusti; Mughal gardens, Lost and Found; Jardin Majorelle. Although divided by time and location, they are not so far apart that the influences of conquerors, trade and migration may be identified in their characters...As a garden, or a progression through the prospect of the garden, the book is planted with shapes, colours, walkways, light, and shade" (from the prospectus).

Description
Finely engraved coat-of-arms on title. Title printed in red & black. 4 p.l., xliii, dxix (i.e. dxvii), [1], cccxlviii (i.e. ccclii), [3] pp. Thick large 4to, orig. publisher’s vellum over boards, fleuron in gilt in center of covers with gilt fleurons in each corner, double gilt fillet round sides, spine gilt, brown morocco lettering piece on spine, a.e.g. Venice: Typis J.B. Pasquali, 1755. Third edition and the first complete edition of the catalogue of Smith’s magnificent collection of incunabula and a few early manuscripts. Smith (1682-1770), was British Consul at Venice and, in 1765, sold his superb library to George III for 10,000 pounds. It thus became the nucleus of the “King’s Library” and of the British Museum (now Library). This copy has the 352-page Appendix which reprints in full some 200 prefaces, dedications, and epilogues contained in incunabula — a unique anthology. Smith’s library was rich in incunabula, early printed books, Italian literature, history, art, architecture, and antiquities. Horace Walpole sneered at Smith as “the merchant of Venice” who knew nothing of his books save their title-pages, but the censure is quite undeserved. Fine copy in the original publisher’s binding. ❧ Gustave Brunet, Dictionnaire de Bibliologie Catholique, col. 625. De Ricci, pp. 54-55. Taylor, Book Catalogues, pp. 261-62.

This collection of meditations by then park ranger Abbey in what was Arches National Monument of the 1950s was quietly published in the raucous sixties in a first edition of 5,000 copies and has now gone on to take its rightful place alongside Aldo Leopold's A Sand County Almanac and Rachel Carson's Silent Spring, as an environmental and wilderness classic. The late author's reflections transcend the mere genre of the environmental essay; the individual pieces form part of a fully realized whole that defined a whole new style of environmental and wilderness writing, inspiring new generations of writers (Barry Lopez and Terry Tempest Williams come to mind) while becoming the author's best known and best loved work in the process, and yes, becoming what Abbey always feared, "a classic

First edition, first printing. 8vo; xiv, 404pp; dark green pictorial cloth over board, gilt stamped lettering, an illustration of a pagoda in red and blue with gilt accents, gilt lettering on spine with vignette; top edge gilt, untrimmed fore edge; color pictorial eps; gift inscription on recto fp dated Dec. 1918; color fp with tissue guard; color map inserted after pg xiv; 53 additional photographic illustrated plates, 5 in color with titled tissue guard; light rubbing to corners, light age toning of paper, a few spots; near fine. A wonderful look at China and her people in the early 20th century. The interesting Forward from the author tackles, in a round about way, the cost of a trip to the "Celestial Republic," and states that "One should not go to China expecting to remain less than three months, and the fascinating novelty of the Orient might begin to fade after a six months' tour. Between the two extremes is the length of time recommended by one who believes that a quarter year holiday in this ancient land of the pagoda is one of the most enjoyable jaunts afield now available to the Western tripper.".

THIS PARTICULAR COPY IS PRESERVED IN FINE CONDITION AND IS LARGELY UNOPENED. "Includes eyewitness information on encounters with Comanches and Kiowas in Western Oklahoma and surrounding areas during the 1820s." (Tate, Indians of Texas 2217). "Fowler was 57 years old and had already survived a long career, dating back to 1782, as a scout, hunter, frontier trader, and surveyor, when, in 1821, he embarked on this trading and trapping expedition to the headwaters of the Arkansas River. His journal of that trip, published here for the first time, describes a trek from Fort Smith, Arkansas, to the present site of Pueblo, Colorado, a season of trapping in and around New Mexico, and a return to St. Louis in 1822. Fowler and his party were the first Americans, after Zebulon Pike, to see much of the country they crossed." (Dorothy Sloan Auction 9, quoting Pingenot). "Hardly another chronicle of the West is so Defoe-like in homemade realism, whether on Indians and Indian horses or Negro Paul's experience with the Mexican 'Lady' at San Fernando de Taos." The introduction, the only portion of the book simultaneously translated into English and German, states, "This monograph is intended to make the Germans more closely acquainted with William Morris the man and with his longing and striving for the truth of art...at the same time appreciating his eminent part in the recent German art of the book since the turn of the century and pointing to the important suggestions Morris in turn received from the works of our German mediaeval printers." Text printed in double columns with red chapter headings and shoulder notes in the style of Morris's perhaps most renowned publication, the Works of Geoffrey Chaucer. Title page printed in red and black. Woodcut portrait frontispiece of Morris tipped-in. Section of black and white plates at back with red captions in English represent the range of Morris's artistic talents, illustrating his paintings, stained glass window designs, wall-paper and tapestry patterns as well as a number of facsimiles of his book designs.

Koln: H. Siebenhar, 1900. Perhaps from the turn of the century, a Rheinpanorama, printed in blue with black and white, postcard-like photographic images of sites along the course of the Rhine. The Rhine Valley was a tourist mecca, and the river made for leisurely touring. The map is 6 1/2” wide and over 4’ long, folded accordion style and bound up on in book form. There is a small chip at the end of one fold; otherwise intact with no repairs. In red pebbled cloth stamped in black.
