Also his classic work: THE HISTORY OF JAPAN, 1827 & 1828 was his most stunning contribution to information on Japan at the time, their flora, especially the tea camellia, acupuncture, hand paper-making, and medical studies relating to acupuncture and the use of moxibustion as a cauterizing & therapeutic agent. He also addresses herbs, pharmacopeias such as ginseng, moxa, ginger and other medicinal plants, most of which were unknown to the western world at this time. . *** In 1683 he joined the Swedish embassy to visit the Shah of Persia. The embassy traveled from Moscow, via Kazan, Astrakhan, across the Caspian Sea to Isfahan, the capital of Persia. Kaempfer ventured out along the way, exploring other areas by the Baku on the Caspian Sea. He was an avid student and mastered the Persian language, which enabled him to then focus on that country's flora, fauna and geography. The results of these studies are found in this text, with especial focus on the flora. . Upon return to Sweden, Kaempfer joined the Dutch East India Company, where he was appointed chief surgeon in the Persian Gulf. He explored Arabia, the west coast of India and finally ended up in Batavia, where he focused on Javanese natural history. While there, he met several people who had been stationed in Deshima, Japan, and some Japanese. At his request, he was appointed chief surgeon to Deshima where he studied all aspects of the Japanese. He also taught Dutch and European medicine to a select few Japanese then who called themselves "Rangakusha" or Dutch students/scholars. . His resulting early and important "HISTORY OF JAPAN," London 1727 introduced many new things to the western world. His essays and illustrations on Japanese acupuncture, moxa, paper-making, natural history, use of cannabis, opium, tobacco and amber shed new light on medical practice in Japan. In many ways the current work resembles the "HISTORY OF JAPAN" in that it outlines similar subjects and in depth essays and extensive illustrations of flora [fruits, vegetables], and fauna found in Persia. He also discusses local customs, musical instruments, costume, fruits and a variety of unusual plants found in the desert and oasis of that area. . In the present work Kaempfer devotes 502 pages to Persia, with 42 stunning copper etched plates, some fold outs. including acupuncture, a long chapter on the Persian date palm, and a variety of cultural, fauna and flora essays. He also attaches an extensive catalogue of Japanese plants with their names and Kanji characters in the text. He adds 47 botanical and other copper etched plates with a map to the last part of this work. . *** THE ENGRAVED PLATES: The plates found in this text are either large fold-outs, single full page, or one half or one third text illustrations. The fold-outs and full single page plates are copper etched, while the text illustrations may be wood cuts or possibly copper etched. The distinguishing "plate mark" is difficult to find on the text plates, while on the others this is very clear. . The list of plates cited on the website of Shinku Nichibun [cited below] has a list of all 91 engravings, including the frontispiece. There are 16 foldouts, the balance are full page or half pages or text plates [1/2 or 1/3 page]. . The book measures 18 x 23 cm., therefore folding plates are double or triple that size, single page are 18 x 23 cm., and one half-page plates are ca. 18 x 12 cm. . *** A fascinating and early primary resource. Written Latin by an astute and scholarly, trained medical physician and keen observer. He writes with careful analysis of where he went, what he saw, who he met, where he traveled and above all recorded a great number of hitherto unknown plants of Asia, many of which are named in Kanji [Japanese & Chinese characters], with the native name as well as Latin names, and descriptions, illustrating a grand number. . *** RARITY: This book is quite rare, and seldom found complete. Our copy contains all plates & text, with some toning to the pages, some corner wear. By and large, an excellent early resource on the plants medicinal plants of Asia, with Chinese characters in the index and also an index to plant names. He illustrates and discusses such important plants as ginseng, the tea camellia, persimmons, and other fruits and vegetables unknown in the western world. . *** CONDITION: . Copy 1: This is nicely rebound in half-leather, with a red leather label and 2 lines of gilt lettering. The text and plates are bright, a very clean copy, with white paper and excellent text and engraving impression. There are a few minor and unimportant small tears, folds, and the like which do not greatly detract from the overall condition. The top edge is black, the front and lower edges are green. Two old library stamps on the title page, else no other marks. There some old small closed tears, folds, a few tiny hole & other issues most of which have be expertly restored using Japanese handmade Washi paper. The work is sound and solid. . There are 2 ex-library stamps on title page & one more discreet stamp on p.67. . The text is bright and clean. green edges. . "A pastoral letter, in which the Bishop of Michoacan reproves his flock for having joined the insurgents under Hidalgo" -- Sabin. The author, Manuel Abad y Queipo, was an interesting figure in the history of Mexico's struggle for independence. He first came to Guatemala, where he was officially ordained, in the 1770s, and went to Morelia (then, Valladolid) in 1784, where he was made a judge of canon law, and was eventually named bishop there in 1810. His strong support of social causes and the indigenous population, as well as his prior friendship with many of the insurgent priests, including Hidalgo himself, made him suspicious to authorities. Even though he excommunicated Hidalgo and other clergy who participated in the uprising and issued the present letter six days later, he was denounced to the Inquisition and had to return to Spain in 1815 to plead his case with the King. Much of this work is a vehement denunciation of Father Hidalgo and the violence of the rebellion combined with an appeal to the proposition that the status quo, with its attendant drawbacks and injustices, is preferable to imminent anarchy: "El cura Hidalgo no puede tampoco alterar ni la fuerza, ni la santidad de las leyes de nuestro Criador y Redentor. El será un seductor como Mahoma, que sin negar la ley escrita, ni la ley de gracia, engañ à la mitad del mundo....Así pues, este nuevo seductor, conduciendos à la la violacion de las leyes Divinas por la rebelion, por el robo y latrocinio, por la opresion de los innocentes, por el desamparo y ruina de sus mugeres, de sus hijos de sus familias, y por la infraccion de la immunidad personal del clero, tratando de persuadiros que con estos crimenes sosteneis la religion y honrais à nuestramadre santisima de Guadalupe...." Abad y Queipo continues much in a similar vein until the coda, in which he pleads with the clergy to use their voice and power to coax the people back to the true church and the crown. The whole is a vivid composition and a fascinating document of the alarmed reaction to the outbreak of violence in colonial Mexico led in good part by erstwhile clergymen. Thirteen volumes (complete), octavo size, approx. 4150 pp. Called "the gay nineties" in America and "the naughty nineties" in Britain, the decade of the 1890s was, in many respects, one in which the Victorian morals and societal codes were loosening with many who, on both sides of the pond, "embraced more freedom, fun, and social permissiveness" (n.b., quote from Wiki). Within the worlds of literature and art, Oscar Wilde (1854-1900) and Aubrey Beardsley (1872-1898) were extremely influential, both with a talent for bringing eroticism into their art and making it - almost - socially acceptable. In addition to their joint collaboration on "Salome" (first published in 1892), they launched this periodical, "The Yellow Book", with its first issue being April, 1894. Beardsley was the first art editor, and while Wilde was not a contributor, his influence can be felt. Ultimately it lasted for only thirteen issues, its demise coming about for almost the same reasons as its success. The public initially saw "The Yellow Book" as "something queer and rather alarming...and thus it almost immediately regarded it as symbolic of new movements..." However, after the trial and conviction of Oscar Wilde the publishers, who were from the outset less inclined towards these new ideals than the artists, combined with a reaction, now negative, from the public ("the [publisher's] premises were set upon by a mob who vandalised the building") its final issue was April, 1897 (n.b., quotes from Wiki). ___DESCRIPTION: All volumes bound in full bright yellow cloth, black illustrations and lettering on the fronts, black lettering and decorations on the spines, the table of contents reproduced on the back covers except the final issue which duplicated the design of the front, replete with reproductions of artwork (all in black and white, with a single exception); bindings octavo size (8 1/8" by 6 1/2"), pagination varies between 256 and 406; note that this set does not have the advertisements bound in at the rear. ___CONDITION: Overall near fine, the boards mostly clean (a few volumes with light spots), the corners mostly straight (a few slightly bumped), most without rubbing and a few with minimal rubbing, strong, square text blocks with solid hinges (we noted a few gutters just beginning to crack), the interiors clean and bright, and the set entirely free of prior owner markings; some light rubbing to the black ink on the bindings on most volumes, light toning to some of the endpapers, a few volumes with the boards very slightly bowed, and some of the spines lightly sunned (note that the spine of Vol. VI is significantly lighter in colour). ___POSTAGE: Please note that this set will require additional postage, please inquire for details. Light toning to text, faint dampstaining and light foxing to some leaves. Later owner stamp to front free endpaper of each volume, interiors otherwise clean. A handsome copy of a rare edition. $1,500. * First Italian edition. This seminal work on penal reform and legislation established Bentham's reputation. The first of his works edited by Dumont, it consists partly of papers by Bentham, some originally written in French, and partly of a digest by Dumont of Bentham's ideas, including an essay on the Panopticon. Dumont, a Swiss writer and journalist, met Bentham at the house of Lord Shelburne in 1788. This meeting resulted in an enduring relationship. Devoted to Bentham's ideas, Dumont translated and edited many of his works and served as his informal literary agent. The first edition of The Theory of Legislation was published in Paris in 1802 as Traites de Legislation Civile et Penale. Our Italian edition came next, followed by an edition in Spanish in 1821-1822 and one in German, with an abridged text, in 1830. The first edition in English was published in Boston in 1840. Single issue of this uncommonly seen German underground journal, inspired by the "Agit 883" periodical published in Berlin from 1969 to 1972. It was intended as a broad forum for a left opposition in Germany, and evolved from an initial interest in Marxism into an anarchist-inspired publication. After the journal published the first public pro-RAF statement in 1970, it was indexed and the publishers were subject to prosecution and police searches, which ultimately led to the end of the project in 1972. The present periodical began with a page in the original Agit 883 dedicated to Bremen, and began to appear as an independent journal two months after the last issue of Agit 883 appeared. An editorial proclaims "Long live the myth of 883, which has risen again!" Like its namesake, the journal sought to "bolster the self-organization of workers, pupils, and students fighting against the state, the wage system, and bureaucracy." Topics covered include the struggle for the Georg von Rauch Haus, anarcho-syndicalism, authoritarian and anti-authoritarian pedagogy, as well as a free youth center in Bremen. The latter, in this issue, include: Red Skelton ("he rode a non-stop carousel of babes and bourbon"); Marlon Brando (about his purported romance with Rita Moreno); Marilyn Monroe (an article about "the hidden secrets behind [her] tragic bust-ups!"); and Loretta Young (her "uncensored" story, "a story you won't see any Sunday night!"). There's also a bit of "hard news," you might say, in the form of an article entitled "Rape of the Congo: The Story the United Nations Hushed," pitched as "A Preliminary Report on the atrocities committed by the Congolese Army against the white population of the Republic of the Congo before the intervention of the Belgian Forces." Perhaps most interesting, however -- especially from our 21st-century perspective -- is an article entitled "The Mixed-up Love Life of 'The Minx of the Riviera'," which is a shamelessly sensationalistic piece about the French transgender entertainer Coccinelle (born Jacques Charles Dufresnoy) (1931-2006), who had been performing as a "showgirl" since 1953 and had undergone vaginoplasty surgery in 1958. By the early 1960s she was a headliner at Le Carrousel and the Olympia in Paris, and also made occasional film appearances. Also (per Wikipedia) she "worked extensively as an activist on behalf of transgender people [and] also helped establish the Center for Aid, Research, and Information for Transsexuality and Gender Identity. In addition, her first marriage was the first union to be officially acknowledged by the government of France, establishing transgender persons' legal right to marry." (But of course "Uncensored" gave her story the sleaziest spin possible: "She's the Darling of the Riviera -- But She's a 'He!'") .
