Description
1818. First Edition. (OBOOKIAH, Henry, a.k.a. OPUKAHAIA, Heneri). [DWIGHT, Edwin Welles, editor]. Memoirs of Henry Obookiah, a Native of Owhyhee, and a Member of the Foreign Mission School… [WITH] BEECHER, Lyman. A Sermon Delivered at the Funeral of Henry Obookiah… [AND] HARVEY, Joseph. The Banner of Christ Set Up. A Sermon. Delivered at the Inauguration of the Rev. Herman Daggett. [AND] DAGGETT, Herman. An Inauguration Address. New-Haven: Religious Intelligencer, 1818. 12mo, original blue-gray paper boards respined, uncut. $2200.Scarce true first edition of the first biography of the Native Hawaiian and Christian convert whose story inspired the earliest American mission to Hawaii, 1818, with engraved frontispiece portrait—the only known likeness of Opukahaia—in original boards. One of the first Hawaiians to convert to Christianity, Henry 'Opukaha'ia (or Opukahaia) fled the violence of the Unification Wars as a teenager and landed in New Haven where, as the story has it, Edwin Welles Dwight found him sitting on the steps of a Yale building, weeping because ""No one will give me learning."" Dwight and members of his family—including Timothy Dwight, president of Yale College—tutored Opukahaia, who became the first student at the Foreign Mission School, ""a special school to prepare natives of heathen countries for missionary service"" (Appletons' Cyclopædia of American Biography) and then the first known Pacific Islander to study at Andover Theological Seminary. Opukahaia was dedicated to the goal of bringing Christianity to Hawaii; he translated the Book of Genesis into Hawaiian and began work on an English-Hawaiian dictionary for missionary use, but contracted typhus and died in 1818 before being able to complete the project. E.W. Dwight edited and published his letters and diaries, and the widely-circulated work quickly became a motivating force for the first American mission to Hawaii. Accompanying the Memoirs here (as issued) are Lyman Beecher's sermon delivered at Opukahaia's funeral, Joseph Harvey's sermon at the inauguration of Herman Daggett as the first principal of the Foreign Mission School, and Daggett's address at the school opening. This 1818 first edition was printed as a fundraiser for the Foreign Mission School shortly after Opukahaia's death and is now uncommon. Shaw & Shoemaker 43896. See Sabin 56429 (listing 1819 editions only). Early inked owner's name.Contents with minor toning and spotting, one leaf with lower outer corner torn away (not touching text), some offsetting from frontispiece. Boards lightly worn, spine refurbished. A lovely copy of this uncommon work, desirable in original boards.

Description
London: Printed for A. Strahan; T. Cadell; and W. Creech, 1787. Third Edition; First London Edition, First State (with "stinking" instead of "skinking" in "To a Haggis"). 212 x 126 mm. (8 1/2 x 5"). xlviii, [13]-372 pp. With half title and the subscriber list [to the Edinburgh edition]. Pleasing contemporary tree calf, smooth spine rebacked preserving most of original backstrip (small restoration at head), this divided into panels with gilt floral centerpiece by gilt chain roll, red morocco label (corners neatly restored). In a fine modern brown buckram chemise and matching mottled calf-backed slipcase. Engraved frontispiece portrait of Burns. Front pastedown with engraved armorial bookplate of Edward Goulburn. Gibson, p. 6; Egerer 2. ◆Mild offsetting from turn-ins' glue, occasional minor foxing or trivial marginal stains, but an excellent copy, clean and fresh internally, the expertly restored binding unworn. This is the first London printing (following an Edinburgh edition the same year and the extremely rare Kilmarnock first edition of 1786) of one of the most famous poetic publications in history. Burns issued the poems at the age of 27 in order to raise passage money for a voyage to Jamaica, where he had been offered an agricultural post on a plantation. At a time when his contemporaries were searching for the "natural bard" and, in the process, had unearthed poetical threshers, poetical milk maidens, and poetical cobblers, the charming plowman Burns delivered his simple and beautiful lyrics with most propitious timing. He found himself famous almost at once, and his fame has not faltered over time, even though, after the appearance of the present work, he did little during the rest of his life except write songs and drink..

Description
New York: Robbins Music Corporation, 1938. First edition. Sheet music, 30x23cm, 5pp. Inscribed by Rodgers on front cover. Illustrated wrappers in two colors with design by Sorokin. Some wear at corners else clean and very good. Tremendous association on this title song from Rodgers and Hart's 1938 musical comedy, I Married an Angel.  This copy comes from the estate of Vera Zorina, (Born Eva Brigitta Hartwig, 1917-2003), who played the lead of "Angel" in the production opposite Dennis King as "Willi," who sings the song.  The music is warmly inscribed by Rodgers "For Angel's sweet mama, in friendship," on the front cover.   The production opened at the Shubert Theatre and ran for 338 performances between 1938 and 1939.  It served as one of her early, major stage roles, her stardom being fueled over the next decade by appearances in several films choreographed by her then-husband, George Balanchine.  A wonderful piece of Broadway Musical memorabilia.  .

Description
New York: White, Stokes, & Allen, 1885. First Edition. Hardcover. Very good +. First separate printing of "Poems" only, sixteenmo size, 142 pp. The writer Charles Dickens (1812-1870) is often considered the greatest of the Victorian era novelists, blending drama and comedy into compelling stories. However, in various forms and on rare occasions, he turned his hand to poetry and, per the writer of the book's Preface, in the writing of such "his hand did not altogether forget its cunning" (n.b., p. 10). In addition to poems in the form usually to be expected (from poetry of that time), this little book also presents the "Prologues" Dickens wrote for the work of other authors, some song verses, "Humourous and Political Verses", and "Examiner Squibs". A delightful and rather uncommon Dickens work, published separately from the more easily found "Plays and Poems of Charles Dickens"; as of this writing, this copy the only one offered (out of the handful currently online) in the original decorated cloth boards. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in full light brown cloth over boards, the front board with a decorative design and lettering in gilt, the spine with title in gilt, gilt top-edge, patterned endpapers, title page all in red with vignette of a pile of books, a ten-page Preface (well worth reading) with no authorial attibution; sixmo size (6 1/4" by 4 1/4"), pagination: [1-5] 6 [7-9] 10-142. ___CONDITION: Somewhat better than very good, the boards clean, gently bumped corners with minimal rubbing, the gilt on the top edge bright, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; minor bumping and light rubbing to the head and tail of the spine, a few signatures a bit roughly opened, and light foxing to the fore- and bottom edges of the text block. ___CITATIONS: Podeschi, no. D110; Carr, no. B298(1). ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
1 page of a bifolium. Octavo. N.d. In ink. On stationery with a place name, monogram, and Paris address embossed at upper left corner. In French (with translation). Stoltz does not dare ask the director to listen to [Rossini's] Guillaume [?Tell]. In spite of her indiscretion, she asks for "only" two tickets for two friends of [?Célestine Galli] Marié. Slightly soiled, foxed and stained; considerably creased. In 1837, Stoltz made her Paris Opéra debut as Rachel in Halévy's La Juive. She remained there for ten years, and created a number of roles, including Ascanio in Berlioz's Benvenuto Cellini (1838) and Léonor in Donizetti's La Favorite (1840). Scandal forced her to resign in 1847, but she returned in 1854. She was especially praised for the intensity of her acting, and her vocal color and broad palette of timbres.
