Description
1537. Rokeby, John (d. 1573). Autograph letter signed to "my cozen Tunstall," most likely Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall (1474-1559). 1 - 1/2pp. N.p., n.d. 223 x 184 mm. Fine apart from light soiling. From ecclesiastical lawyer John Rokeby, who acted as one of Henry VIII's counsel in his divorce from Katharine of Aragon and later served as a member of the Council of the North, a regional administrative body originally established by Richard III and later reinstated by Henry VIII in 1530 as a means of exerting control over England's pro-Catholic northern counties. His correspondent was most likely Bishop Cuthbert Tunstall, who served as president of the Council in 1530 and 1537; Tunstall is best known today as the author of De arte supputandi libri quattuor (1522), the first book published in England devoted exclusively to mathematics. In his letter Rokeby asks Tunstall for a "contribution to enable me to go through with my presant Undertaking . . . I began this Method last yeare but was check'd by ill health & want of the proper Instrument Lond. being too expensive for me & some necessary Cloaths awanting however am now determin'd to goe by sea as soon as possablely I can . . ." Rokeby and Tunstall may have been related, as they were both from the same part of England and Rokeby addressed Tunstall as "cozen." .

1910-1926. First editions. THE BIRTH OF AMERICAN ACADEMIC PEDIATRICS ARCHIVED IN 160 OFFPRINTS FROM THE MGH, 1910-1926. Three hardcover volumes, 10 inches tall, gray buckram binding, gilt title to spines, each containing offprints (with original wraps as issued) published by Dr. Fritz B. Talbot and colleagues at the Children's Medical Clinic of Massachusetts General Hospital from 1910 to 1926. Vol. 1, titled "1910-1920," bookplate to front paste-down of "Treadwell Library, Massachusetts General Hospital, The Gift of Dr. F. B. Talbot," 44 offprints by Fritz B. Talbot on general pediatric topics, including metabolic studies; Vol. 2, titled, "1910-1920," bookplate of Treadwell Library, 56 offprints by William R. P. Emerson, Richard S. Eustis, Warren R. Sisson, Richard M. Smith, James H. Young. Topics include nutrition, pediatric infectious disease, cardiology, nephrology, gastroenterology; Vol. 3, titled, "1921-1926." bookplate of Treadwell Library, 60 offprints by Fritz B. Talbot, William R. P. Emerson, Joseph Garland, Gerald N. Hoeffel, Ralph T. Ogden, Edward S. O'Keefe, Eli C. Romberg, Edward B. Shaw, Warren R. Sisson, Katherine Thacher. Most of the Talbot papers comprise metabolic studies, those of other authors include growth, nutrition, pediatric cardiology, endocrinology, nephrology, and allergy. Covers clean, fragile front flyleaf loose in Vol. 3 and lacking in Vols. 1 & 2, browning to endpapers and page edges, handstamp of MGH library to covers of some offprints, bindings tight, very good in custom archival mylar covers. HISTORY: The first child admitted to Mass General was an 11 year-old girl in 1821. No separate pediatric service existed until 1910, when Dr. Fritz B. Talbot founded the Children's Medical Clinic. FRITZ BRADLEY TALBOT (1878-1964 ) received his MD from Harvard in 1905 and 5 years later became Chief of the Children's Medical Service serving from 1910 to 1931. He was a visionary who persevered through war and the Great Depression to develop a complete pediatric medical department to serve the children of Boston at Mass General. He was a pioneer in describing the underlying causes and consequences of "failure to thrive" in infancy and early childhood, quantifying the energy requirements of growing children (BMR) by measuring the expired carbon dioxide (measurements/reference standards that are quite close to those in use today). A landmark paper co-authored with the physiologist Francis Gano Benedict (Studies in the Respiratory Exchange in Infants, American Journal of Diseases of Children, 1914) is offprint No. 21 in Vol. 1 offered here. Talbot also established the importance of vitamin D in childhood nutrition, the concept of food allergy and many other highly novel and significant advances during that time. Vol. 3 contains 30 of Talbot's publications in the years 1921-1926, with many more metabolic studies. The authors included in Vol. 2 and 3 comprise the work of physician faculty and house staff under the leadership of Fritz Talbot at the Children's Medical Clinic in the early 20th century. Drs. Eustis and Sisson were MGH house officers in 1912 and Dr. Edward Byer Shaw became Chair of Pediatrics at the University of California, San Francisco (1934-1942) and President of the American Academy of Pediatrics (1949-1950). Following retirement, Talbot studied art at the Scott Harbee School and at Harvard; his paintings hang in the Museum of Fine Arts and the Fogg Museum.

Venizia: Presso Antonio Savioli, 1775. 8vo.  200 x 140 mm., [7 ¾ x 5 ¼ inches].  107 [1] pp.  Contemporary paste-paper boards; binding soiled, title in ink on spine, text block lightly foxed throughout. First edition, followed by a Verona edition, with addition, printed in 1798.  A select bibliography, listing over 300 titles, by authors, editors, and commentators who were represented in the Vocabulario Della Crusca and were recognized for their contributions to the standardization of the Italian language.   The best editions of both classical and contemporary authors are described by Bravetti, who annotates his list with notes on previous edition and comments on the quality of the language used by the original authors and their editors.  This is one of the earliest bibliographical studies of Italian literature and follows the work of Giuseppe Baretti and Alessandro Pompeo Berti and Domenico Giorgi and their catalogue of the Capponi collection published in 1747. Bravetti's work was based on the collection of Giuseppe Gradenigo, to whom the book is dedicated. The Gradenigo collection was subsequently sold enbloc to the bookseller Adolfo Cesare. Description
London: Samuel French Limited [printed by the St Dominic's Press, Ditchling Common, Hassocks], 1932. Hardcover. Near fine. Revised variant edition, duodecimo size, 116 pp. Mimes, the author states, are similar to early liturgical plays and this work includes mimes titled, "The Stations of the Cross", "The Rosary", "St. George and the Turkish Knight", 'Harlequinade" and "Sir Galahad"; illustrated with drawings of masks designed and made by Dunstan Pruden. The Saint Dominic's Press, founded by Harry (Hilary) Douglas Clarke Pepler, flourished at Ditchling, Sussex, from 1916 to 1936. The first home of the Press was "a disused stable", with a hundred-year-old Stanhope hand-press which supposedly had belonged to William Morris. Pepler endeavored to do everything possible by hand, believing that such would both produce the best results and also be a "more individual or 'humane'...product". He therefore "preferred the handpress to the machine, handmade to machine-made paper, and handset founder's type to the products of typesetting machines." Pepler met Edward Johnston and Eric Gill while living in Hammersmith; Pepler and his family would eventually move to Ditchling to join Gill, who was one of the most important artists to provide illustrations for the St. Dominic's Press. Other artists who provided illustrations included David Jones, Desmond Chute, Philip Hagreen, and Mary Dudley Short, among others. ___DESCRIPTION: Printed tan paper wrappers with yapped edges, black lettering and a small illustration on the front wrap and title page; duodecimo size (7 1/2" x 5"), pagination: [i-iv] 1-110 [111] [1, colophon]. . ___CONDITION: Near fine, the wraps clean, a strong, square text block, the interior is clean and entirely free of prior owner markings; dustiness to the yapped edges, a lightly stamped price ("Price 75¢") at the bottom margin of the front wrap, small creases on front cover and slight foxing to endpapers. ___CITATIONS: Taylor and Sewell, no. A218; note that the quotes and much of the introductory information from "Three Private Presses" by Brocard Sewell. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Description
Washington DC: Printed by Gales & Seaton, 1831. First Edition. Very good. First edition; 8 1/4 x 5 1/4; pp. [1], 4-53, [1]; self-wraps, stitched, as issued; deckled fore-edge; some creasing and a few small nicks to edges and corners; some spotting and foxing, not affecting readability; overall in very good condition. Tristam Burges (1770 - 1853) was a US Congressman from Rhode Island, served as Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of the state, and lectured as a professor at Brown University. John Randolph (1773 - 1833) was a US Senator from Virginia, who was also Minister to Russia under Andrew Jackson in 1830. Allegedly, after serving only a few months, Randolph resigned for health reasons and spent almost a year in England, before returning to the US in October of 1831. The current speech, delivered prior to his return, addressed several issues, among which were his "deserting his post" and the Secretary of State's advising the President to appoint Randolph to the position, despite knowing his health problems, thus rendering the diplomatic appointment and the appropriation bill for his salary illegal.
