Description
1950. First Edition. Signed. CHAGALL, Marc. Verve. Contes de Boccace. Paris: Éditions de la Revue Verve, 1950. Folio, original lithographic dust jacket over boards. $5800.First edition of this exceptional volume of 26 Chagall heliogravures, accompanied by 26 tipped-in color prints from a medieval miniaturist, boldly signed by Chagall on the half title. From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and friend of Chagall. The art critic Stratis Eleftheriades, under the nom de plume Tériade, published the art journal Verve in Paris from 1937 to 1960. He commissioned famous artists of the day, from Matisse to Picasso and Chagall, to provide works for the journal, with numerous lithographs appearing for the first time in his publications. This volume is particularly notable for the unusual medium (for Chagall) used: ""New washed drawings in India ink, which are quite unrelated to anything he had done before. Using black diluted in every possible degree from onyx to the palest shade of gray, he produced sheets that give an intensely colorful effect… These drawings… were a response to what he saw in his new environment and stemmed from the urge to render in a spontaneous fashion the overwhelming impact of the profusion and light. They also reveal, paradoxically, the increased importance of color as a medium of expression. In these drawings, 'light' does not signify a diminution of the colorfulness, but an advance into the zone from which it springs. One might say that the heart of the color is light and from this light Chagall created the colorfulness of his sheets. What this means is visibly demonstrated by the drawings he did at Tériade's suggestion for the number of Verve dedicated to Boccaccio's Decameron. What Chagall produced was a present-day counterpart to colored reproductions of the miniatures in a fifteenth-century manuscript of Boccaccio's work. For each of his drawings he drew inspiration from the miniature of the same scene and the old and new illustrations are reproduced side by side in the pages of Verve. In Chagall, however, everything attains a new meaning. A new logic links the objects of the anecdotic 'tale,' and the plot of the love story gives rise to ardent desire and serene joy. What is more, in Chagall's large black-and-white plates the light radiates in a far richer modulation of color than the full coloring of the miniaturist's precise magic-lantern pictures"" (Meyer, 499). From the collection of Joseph Liverant, a fellow Russian Jewish emigré and close friend of Chagall. Liverant and Chagall both fled Europe in World War II, Liverant to Canada and Chagall to the United States. After the war, both acquired residences in Provence, where shared social circles, similar ages, and a mutual love of Yiddish combined to forge a lasting bond of friendship between the two.About-fine condition.

Description
London: Raphael Tuck & Sons, 1914. Original quarter brown cloth over beveled brown boards. Front cover pictorially stamped and lettered in black and white with laid-on color plate. Spine lettered in black. Collating 136, [4, ads]. Twelve color plates (including frontispiece) and numerous black and white text illustrations. Corners and spine ends a little rubbed, inner front hinge expertly strengthened, some minor marginal soiling to some leaves. Still a Very Good copy. One of the rarest of all Wain-illustrated books, the cat-master's delightful take on a tinker, tailor, soldier, sailor, gentleman, apothecary, ploughboy, thief. At the end of the last century, Louis Wain (1860-1939), the Edwardian cat artist, became a household name as an illustrator of cats, whom he depicted in all sorts of activities, from skating and playing cricket to driving motor cars, attending dances, and playing musical instruments. "He invented a cat style, a cat society, a whole cat world. English cats that do not look like Louis Wain cats are ashamed of themselves" (H.G. Wells). "From 1883, Wain began to draw cats as they had never been drawn before, cats in humorous guises, in human situations, but always beautifully handled...[a]lthough he was sometimes forced to draw dogs before he became well- known!" (Houfe, The Dictionary of British Book Illustrators and Caricaturists 1800-1914 ) . Dale, 201.

Description
Salt Lake City, 1890. Cabinet card. Albumen photograph [12.5 cm x 20.5 cm] on a tan mount [18 cm x 25.5 cm] Title in the negative at the foot. Overall sunning and fading. Bird's eye illustration of the original Saltair. Founded by Mormon leaders and the Salt Lake, Garfield and Western Railway, as an alternative to the "Gentile" resorts on the Great Salt Lake, Saltair has been the most successful of all of these resorts, and now in its third incarnation, after the previous were both destroyed by fires. Saltair also played a starring role in the horror film, 'Carnival of Souls.' Charles Roscoe Savage (1832-1909) was an accomplished and prolific photographer who lived successfully within his Salt Lake City community and traveled widely throughout the West taking photographs and befriending other important photographers of his day such as Carleton Watkins, Edward Wilson, Timothy O'Sullivan, Alfred Hart and A.J. Russell. Savage took several of the West's most famous images at the celebration of the joining of the transcontinental railroads at Promontory Point, Utah in 1869. Savage also took the first photographs of what became Zion National Park.
