Description
England, 1850. 18 cards (89 x 54 mm), 9 printed on pink cardstock and 9 on yellow. Housed in original slipcover made of pebbled green paper over boards with chromolithographed label affixed to the front, open at top and bottom. Light wear to edges of slipcover, otherwise in excellent condition. A charming and unusual magic card game based on mathematical principles that purports to reveal anyone’s name and age. Using the pink cards for women and yellow for men, the questioner holds onto the instruction and key cards and gives the player the rest of them, which have lists of names and numbers and the letters A E I O U W and Y at the top. The player tells the questioner the letters corresponding to which cards have their name on them, and, using the key, the questioner adds their corresponding numbers to get the player’s name (provided it is one of the 127 names listed). The game is played the same way to determine players’ ages. The game actually works!

Description
Waterloo, Ia, 1925. Very good.. Folding map, 11.5 x 17.5 inches, in a printed card cover, 6.25 x 4.75 inches. Light wear and soiling to covers. Map with slight separation at corner folds, lightly toned. A map of the roads in Iowa, prepared by the state Highway Commission. The map is pasted into printed card covers advertising the Harrison Motor Co. of Nashua, Iowa; the cover also includes a list of automobile license prefix numbers for the state. The verso of the map is printed with ads for several related establishments in Charles City (a garage, tires, etc). The map, which shows the state gridded out by counties and crisscrossed with roads, lists sixteen specific highways by name in the lower corner, including the Daniel Boone Trail, the Iowa Parks Highway, King of Trails, National Parks Pike, and the Great White Way. Though there are several state highway maps from the 1920s and 1930s, we find nothing that matches the description of this "Copy of" the official road map in OCLC. A nice local item.

Two vintage original black-and-white print still photos: Handy with trumpet in hand, ca. 1940, 10 x 8" (25 x 30 cm) with photo agency sticker on verso, fine; Handy with Oscar Hammerstein to his left and two others, 1957, 7 x 9" (18 x 23 cm) with date stamp on verso, printing notations in right margin, signs of light handling, very good. W.C. Handy (1873-1958) was an American composer, musician and extremely influential songwriter, often referred to as "The Father of the Blues". Obviously, he didn't create blues music, but he did incorporate blues elements into many of his songs, like "Saint Louis Blues" which went on to become a classic.

General wear. Letter folds.
Description
Superior, WI: Lake Superior System of Missions, Nov-00. General wear. Letter folds.. Four promotional fundraising items providing information on the mission. The first item is a printed on letterhead from Nason, describing his mission and specifically requesting help for the upcoming 1900-1901 winter campaign to the logging camps, as well as some of the services provided there, such as "Free reading room, cheap lunches served, low priced lodgings, gospel meetings, distribution of bibles, papers and tracts". Done in purple ink. Single sided page. Measures 8 1/2" x 5 1/2". Also includes a folded pamphlet "Glances -- Retrospective and Prospective, Lumbermen's Mission, West Superior Department, The Eight Year, 1899-1900". A yearly summary with accomplishments and future goals. Of note in the summary is that the missionary is now focusing on women and children in the area, stating that "our work at first was chiefly among men. Now women and children, less in number in this new country than men, but more awfully wronged, are receiving our earnest attention." The mission also had to suspend work in Ashland, WI, calling it a "heavy drain upon our resources", but promises to refocus that money elsewhere. The pamphlet ends with a short note about Nason's daughter, Cora A. Nason, who returned briefly home to rest after working as a missionary in Armenia and Greece. 8 pg. folded pamphlet (one page is blank). Measures 6"x 3" (folded), 12" x 6" (unfolded). Next is a folded pamphlet entitled "Excerpts From The Letters of Our Workers in Logging Camps and Frontier Settlements, No. 2". As stated in the title this pamphlet is letter from Rev. J. E. Chase, an itinerant Pastor for the mission, who works in Washburn County, WI. The letter describes the level of difficultly traveling the area, the small towns he travels to, and the people he meets along the way. Chase describes the people he comes across mostly as poor folk, who without a pastor there to guide them have fallen into despair, and in some cases, sin. The pamphlet ends with a short note from Rev. Nason with an appeal for money, so that the mission might be able to send itinerant pastors out to the area on a regular basis. 10 pg. folded pamphlet. Measures 6" x 3" (folded), 15" x 6" (unfolded). The final item is double sided newsletter from the King's Daughters and Sons' Mission located in West Superior, WI, which was a part of the Lake Superior System of Missions, but one that focused exclusively on the children in the area. The letter is also addressed to children, specifically other children in Sunday School, and tells them a little about the men who work in the Lake Superior area as lumber jacks, boatmen, miners, and common laborers. These descriptions paint a rather rosy picture both about the work and the men, which is odd as the letter then takes a rather sharp turn and states that the children of these laborers mostly "come from destitute families. The fathers are drunkards and the mothers, sad neglected women. We want to throw all the good influences we can around theses children and therefore, we teach them about God..." The letter ends with a short description of the services provided in order to save these children and an appeal for money from other Sunday school children. Double sided, single page. Measures 9 1/2" x 5 1/4". The last item is the envelope these items were originally sent in. The envelope is addressed to Edwin C. Chandler of Etna, NH. Measures 6 1/2" x 3 1/2" Lake Superior System of Missions was founded in 1892 by Rev. John H. Nason (1841-1908), a Congregationalist minister, in order to serve the lumber men and frontier families living and working in the area around Lake Superior. After his death in 1908, the work was carried on by his successor Rev. Harry F. Milford.

New York: William Godwin, Inc.. Good. 1932. First Edition. Hardcover. (no dust jacket) [worn copy, with a light dampstain down the right edge of the front cover, light bumping and slight exposure of boards at all corners]. INSCRIBED and SIGNED by the author on the front endpaper: "Dear Louis Berg -- / I'm sending you this because / I'll never be able to say what I want / to -- because you healed my body / with your skill and with your / wisdom & your patient friendship / healed my spirit & my mind. / Asa Bordages." Rare-ish novel "set amid the tempestuous turmoil of New York's Greenwich Village," involving seven men struggling to come to terms with their past relationships with the (deceased) title character, the beautiful and enigmatic Helen Morceau. The author was later a combat correspondent with the U.S. Marines during World War II, and a newspaperman whose claim to (tiny) fame was having coined the term "Murder Inc." to refer to the New York gangsters of the 1930s and 1940s. (Regarding the inscribee of this copy: although I have no proof of this, it may well be the same Louis Berg who was the author of the novel "Prison Doctor" -- and who was, in fact, a doctor -- published the same year, and at least one other book I know of, "Devil's Circus.")
