Second Story Books, ABAA (United States)
Description
[n.p.], [c. 1700]. Hardcover. Octavo, [2], [620 pages] (unpaginated; 310 leaves). In Good condition. Manuscript in ink, appearing to date to the late 17th- or early 18th century. Italian Language. Bound in 19th-century brown-paper boards. Boards show significant wear to edges, especially along joints. Text block nearly disbound from boards, but all pages apparently present. Text in a consistent cursive hand, legible with occasional dialectal features. Light age toning and minor wear to text block edges. The manuscript preserves a full-scale vernacular biography of Pope Sixtus V (Felice Peretti, 1521–1590) in four parts (parte) further subdivided into chapters (capitolo). This comprises the bulk of the codex (pp. 1–594). This vita belongs to the long-form narrative tradition also represented in Vatican Barberini Lat. 4971 and related codices, marked by its opening formula (“Nacque Sisto V nella Marca, cioè nel Castello delle Grotte…”) and by the inclusion of contemporary anecdotes, satirical pasquinate, and popular commentary. The copyist has added a distinctive opening homage (“Non si vidde né tempi passati né si vedrà in futuro Istoria che l’eguagli…”) not found in other witnesses. Two appended sections follow the biography: Sentenze di Sisto V dette in varie occasioni, raccolte da certi messeri (pp. 595–599). A collection of 27 aphoristic sayings attributed to the pontiff, paralleled in Vat. lat. 9721 and the Sentenze tradition.(1982). Relazione della morte di Francesco Peretti, nipote di Sisto V (pp. 600–619). An account of the murder of Sixtus’ nephew Francesco (Franco) Peretti, a common appendix in this branch of the tradition. Shelved Room A. This is an Italian vernacular manuscript copy of the Life of Pope Sixtus V, Pope from 1585 to 1590. The text records the life and deeds of Felice Peretti, the friar who rose from humble beginnings to become a Pope celebrated for his administrative reforms, infrastructural projects in Rome, and fierce defense of ecclesiastical authority. The handwriting style is suggestive late 17th-century or early 18th-century chancery script. Characteristic features include long, sinuous ascenders, looped descenders, and the fluid ligaturing of common letter pairs, all of which reflect the formal administrative hands then employed in legal and notarial contexts. While in the cancelleresca cursive tradition (with elongated ascenders, a consistent long ſ, and looped h and p) which originated in the late 16th-century, the execution here is looser and more provinicial point to a vernacular or monastic copyist in the early 18th-century. A contemporary note on the front free end page attributes the work to Cicciarelli (likely a reference to Antonio Ciccarelli, d. 1599, continuator of Platina’s Vitae Pontificum). No surviving catalogued manuscript of this branch, including Barberini 4971 and its siblings, explicitly names Ciccarelli, and modern inventories treat the authorship of these manuscripts as anonymous. The present attribution may reflect a scribal or local tradition recognizing Ciccarelli’s authority as an early biographer of Sixtus V. . 1402628. Special Collections.

Description
Chicago: Montgomery Ward & Co., Inc., 1943. Softcover. First edition; 9 x 7 1/2; pp. [1], 4-84; illustrated wraps; small loss of paper to head of spine; thin cut to bottom edge; lower corner of several of the leaves clipped (as published); very good condition. A wartime edition, with a caveat added that: "Wallpaper Books use valuable dyes, inks and paper stock - the Government has issued a limitation order to conserve these critical materials for war use...This Wallpaper Sample Book will undoubtedly be the only edition that we can offer to our customers for the duration. Will you, therefore, please co-operate with us by returning this Catalog after it has served your purpose, so that other Ward customers may share the use of it with you?" The mail order company was founded by Aaron Montgomery Ward in 1872 and is still in existence today. Despite the war restrictions, the catalog contained a dazzling array of wallpaper sheets - embossed, painted, gilded, and textured. Also, fittingly, "patriotic colors in stripes" were offered.

Description
Victor, Colorado: By the author, 1916. Very good. Three issues, n. d. (ca 1916); 6 1/2 x 5 1/4; pp. 14, 12, 12 respectively; loose leaves, folded unto each other; manuscript entries and drawings and newspaper clippings; generally mild wear, with occasional spotting and a bit of wear to edges; overall in very good condition. A truly-delightful, WWI-era, teenager's periodical from the gold-mining town of Victor, Colorado - it was replete with important news of the day, delivered in both manuscript and in the form of newspaper clippings, including the bust of a moonshiners' outfit, the big success of a ladies' minstrel show at the VIctor Opera House, the formation of the Victor Library Association, and the arrival of new 2c-stamps - "almost white, showing plainly the effect of the European War in causing a shortage of dye stuffs." Severe weather and snowstorms were often mentioned, including the headline: "Weather Fierce!" in one of the journals. The author, calling herself Shakespearibus, Editor in Chief, also penned a manuscript editorial in each issue, in the form of a letter to her older sister, in which she shared gossip and in one instance exclaimed: "Enuff is enuff. I have done myself quite proud in getting up this edition of the gazette. I don't care if you show it to your friends."

Cambridge:: Cambridge University Press, 1995., 1995. Large 8vo. xiv, 429, [1] pp. Illustrations, index. Black cloth, dust-jacket. Near fine. ISBN: 0521444896 First edition. "This, the first full-length biography of E.E. Barnard, tells the remarkable tale of endurance and achievement of one of the leading astronomers of the late nineteenth century and early twentieth century. Barnard scoured the heavens endlessly, leaving an astonishing legacy of observations -- of planets, satellites, comets, double stars, bright and dark nebulae, and globular clusters -- that make him one of the greatest observers of all time. / This book traces Barnard's life from impoverished origins to status as an internationally recognized astronomer. His success as a professional astronomer unfolds in 1842 as he discovers the fifth satellite of Jupiter (the first since Galileo) and pioneers wide-angle photography of the Milky Way, which leads to the recognition of dark nebulae--clouds of dust on the galactic plane. / Beautifully illustrated throughout, this book provides a complete history of Barnard's fascinating life and work, based largely on previously unpublished archival material, that will be of interest to astronomers and historians of science." [CUP] Also issued in paperback in 2007; this is the hardcover original issue. REVIEW: [1] ". . . Barnard's achievements are remarkable, and with this biography William Sheehan has given us the first detailed account of Barnard's step-by-step journey toward scientific prominence . . . .a well-written and meticulously researched biography that makes judicious use of voluminous archives. With its numerous photographs (including many of Barnard's own) it is a handsome and well-produced volume . . . .this biography recounts an inspiring example of what one individual can accomplish with hard work and dedication, against all odds. It is a lesson that should not go unheeded by students or professionals, even in the era of big science." Steven J. Dick, Science. [2] ". . . chock full of footnotes and contains an extensive bibliography. Sheehan's prose is eloquent and easily understandable to Astronomy readers. Barnard's photographs appear throughout, and Sheehan quotes frequently from Barnard's own papers. The Immortal Fire Within not only gives the reader a comprehensive overview of Barnard's life, but it also conveys a real feeling for what it was like to be an astronomer at the turn of the century, when the science was undergoing profound transformations." New York: Random House. Near Fine. (c.1942). First Edition. Hardcover. (lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [nice clean copy with minimal shelfwear, spine slightly turned, minor bumping to lower front corner]. Novel about the young widow of an up-and-coming politician who's killed in a solo car accident, and her subsequent affair with the war correspondent who's been assigned by his newspaper to write the dead man's biography -- and the tension that arises from the writer's gradual discovery that the truth about his subject doesn't quite line up with his public image. Basis for the 1942 film of the same name, directed by George Cukor, which was already in pre-production when the novel was published in April 1942, and was the second teaming of stars Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy. The Grosset & Dunlap edition of the book, issued as a tie-in with the movie, is quite common, but the first edition is remarkably scarce. Although not marked as such, this copy comes from the library of noted M-G-M producer/writer Carey Wilson (who was not involved in the making of the film, although it was made at M-G-M, with Victor Saville as producer and screenplayed by Donald Ogden Stewart.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .

(lacking the original dust jacket, but encased in a professionally-made facsimile reproduction of same; see 2nd image posted with this listing) [shelfworn book, with some external soiling, bumping and fraying at several corners, one-time owner's inked initials plus date & place of purchase along edge of rear pastedown (concealed beneath jacket flap)]. The author's first mystery novel published under his own name (following a handful of earlier collaborative efforts with Charles Hunt Marshall as "Peter Hunt"), and the introduction of his amateur detective character, "the ancient and august Lord Broghville." While visiting friends in America, Lord B. gets involved in solving a baffling murder, as one does. (The jacket blurb declares that the creation of this character "will endear him to mystery-story fans" and that "you will meet him again in other mysteries by Mr. Yates," but the character apparently turned out to be a one-off. Yates himself turned out just a few more mystery novels before devoting himself primarily to screenwriting.) NOTE again that this book bears a FACSIMILE dust jacket, to serve the dual purpose of protecting the book from further wear and enhancing its appearance on the shelf; its presence has not been factored in to our pricing. .

1990. Richard Wright. Native Son. The First Edition Library - FEL. Shelton, CT. Hardcover Facsimile First Edition that looks just like the true first edition that cost about $3000 today. Native Son (1940) is a novel written by the American author Richard Wright. It tells the story of 20-year-old Bigger Thomas, a black youth living in utter poverty in a poor area on Chicago's South Side in the 1930s. While not apologizing for Bigger's crimes, Wright portrays a systemic causation behind them. Bigger's lawyer, Boris Max, makes the case that there is no escape from this destiny for his client or any other black American since they are the necessary product of the society that formed them and told them since birth who exactly they were supposed to be. Fine in a Fine dust jacket in a Very Good slipcase. These Facsimile Editions are becoming scarce and collectable in their own right.

Bernard "Buddy" Rich (1917-1987) was an American jazz drummer, songwriter, conductor and bandleader. He is considered one of the most influential drummers of all time. Brilliant and innovative, he was known to be volatile and difficult to work with and for. (Wikipedia) The earliest photo is from his 1941 appearance in the Paramount film Las Vegas Nights when he was part of the Tommy Dorsey Orchestra. The second is a ca. late-1940s talent agency photo. The last is likely from the early-1970s when he opened his own nightclub, "Buddy's Place", in Manhattan while incorporating rock elements into his repertoire to adapt to changing tastes.
