Description
Los Angeles, CA: Florence B. D'Urso, 1999. Hardcover. Fine. Hardcover. A book celebrating the history and beauty of liturgical vestments created and embroidered for John Cardinal Farley (1848-1918), a revered Archbishop of New York. His successor, John Cardinal O'Connor, allowed the vestments to be given to the whole church. The vestments were worn at the Vatican in 1997 at the rededication of the Chapel of Pope Nicholas V, which was decorated with frescos by Fra Angelico. The book was rebound in rich maroon full morocco with an elegant gilt double border to the front board and gilt accents to the banded spine. It is housed in a beautifully executed gold cloth covered slipcase complete with illustrated pastedown inlay, maroon silk ribbon, and title stamp matching the front board. The slipcase is exceptional, made with double-thick boards and lined internally with maroon linen. This book is internally pristine and accented with textured maroon silk endpapers, with gilt to all text edges. There are color photographic illustrations throughout showing each of the garments, with detail plates to highlight their workmanship. Also includes photos from the rededication ceremony at the Vatican. This is a finely bound gift copy of the highest quality. 96 pages. REL/051706.

Description
New York: The New York Times. Near Fine. 2020. (February 9, 2020). Newspaper. [minimal external handling wear, slight wrinkling typical of a newspaper supplement; no folds or tears]. (B&W photographs) This 52-page Special Section of The New York Times presents eight essays by "luminaries of the African diaspora," reflecting on the 60th anniversary of the "Year of Africa" (1960), during which no fewer than seventeen countries on the continent declared independence from their colonial rulers. The essays are by Imbolo Mbue, Bozoma Saint John, Wayétu Moore, Didier Drogba, David Adjaye, Dinaw Mengestu, Omar Victor Diop, and Luvvie Ajayi, and are complemented by photographs from that remarkable time (39 of them, including the cover image, many printed one to a page), selected from the Times archive and other collections. Per the editor's introduction: "Each of the 17 countries that gained independence that year is represented here, but there are also images from countries, like Ghana, with especially rich photographic traditions." Printed on newsprint (not slick paper, unfortunately), the publication measures approximately 11"x12" (the same size as The New York Times Book Review section). .
