Description
26 hand-colored brush & ink illus. 89; 78 folding leaves. Two vols. 8vo (245 x 170 mm.), orig. wrappers (a little frayed), old stitching. [Japan]: 1742 (date of Preface). A late Edo copy of this well-known work of ethnography, which has never been published. Matsudaira proceeds chronologically, covering the calendar year and its festivals. For example, the book covers the “seven kinds of porridge” eaten at the time of the New Year in the Nara period. The grains used were rice, barley, wheat, millet, glutinous millet, soybean, and adzuki bean. In later times, this practice developed into a tradition of eating “seven-herb porridge,” which included various vegetables. Another tradition covered is that of sagichō 三毬打, a festival for exorcising evil spirits that originated in the Hei’an period. The festival survives today, with people burning their new year’s decorations for good luck. An illustration in our book shows people dressed up as demons, setting fire to a pine gate, and beating drums. Other illustrations show people on swings; people engaged in what appears to be a cockfight; boat racing during the tango no sekku festival, as in China; burning trees in front of an altar; and a person dressed up like a demon and carrying a sword being chased by archers. Matsudaira’s text is a learned treatise; at the beginning, he has added a lengthy bibliography of works from which he quotes throughout the text. Matsudaira Kunzan (1697-1783), also known as Matsudaira Shiryū, was a Confucian scholar and a geographer. Known for his scholarly publications, he was made librarian of the domain and held the position for 38 years. In 1756, he established a book collection called Riintei 吏隠亭, or “Pavilion Where the Clerk Hides,” which contained over 1200 titles in almost 3700 volumes (including 500 volumes borrowed from his mother’s family). He authored a number of books, both on order from the domain and on his own initiative. Fine copy.

Description
viii, 120 pp. 4to, cont. pale blue paper wrappers (spine defective). Vienna: La Société Typographique, 1790. The uncommon sale catalogue of the collections formed by the founder of the famous Viennese music publisher. Originally from Lucca, Mechetti (c. 1745-1811), encountered financial troubles and was forced to sell his collection of thousands of items, primarily Italian prints and paintings. In the introduction, Mechetti highlights certain pieces in his collection, which was apparently not for sale by auction but rather private contract. Pages 113-20 describe a large library rich in books on the arts and history. Nice copy. This copy was inscribed on the inside front wrappers to the amateur geologist Baron de Beroldingen (see Zittel). From the library of His Serene Highness Prince Fürstenberg at Donaueschingen with his stamp on title. ❧ Cicognara 4548.

London: Bloomsbury, 1999-2007. The Complete Deluxe Set In Very Fine Condition ROWLING, J.K. The Harry Potter Series: The Sorcerer's Stone; The Chamber of Secrets; The Prisoner of Azkaban; The Goblet of Fire; The Order of the Phoenix; The Half-Blood Prince; and The Deathly Hallows. London: Bloomsbury, 1999-2007. First U.K. Deluxe Editions. Seven octavo volumes (9 3/16 x 5 3/4 inches; 233 x 145 mm). Original publisher's cloth in varying colors (red, blue, green, purple, burgundy, blue, and grey), each volume with pictorial onlays to the upper covers, titles stamped in gilt, spines lettered in gilt, all edges gilt. No dust jackets issued, as published. A fine, as new set - the fourth, fifth and sixth titles still in their original shrink wrap. The Deluxe Editions were issued by Bloomsbury as a more luxurious alternative to the standard trade printings, intended as a collector's and presentation format. Distinct in their richly colored cloth bindings, gilt edges, and pictorial onlays, they represent the most attractive contemporary U.K. issue of the series in uniform form. Sets of the Deluxe issue, published over an eight-year period, are increasingly difficult to assemble in consistently fine condition, as volumes were often purchased individually and subject to handling. The present example is notably fresh and uniform throughout. J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter sequence remains one of the defining publishing phenomena of modern literature, with worldwide sales exceeding 450 million copies and translations into dozens of languages. The series reshaped the landscape of children's and young adult fiction and achieved rare crossover success with adult readers, while its film adaptations further cemented its global cultural impact.
