Large folio (13 by 17 inches), unsewn as issued, original glassine wrappers, original clasped parchment box. $6500.Beautiful large limited folio Passover Haggadah, number 175 of only 228 copies (out of a total edition of 292) on Arches Vergé paper, illustrated by Ben Shahn with 21 color pictorial borders and line drawings and an additional beautiful double-page color lithograph also signed by him.Lithuanian-born graphic artist Ben Shahn executed many of the illustrations for this Haggadah around 1930, while working on a pictorial representation of the Dreyfus case and conceiving his celebrated series of paintings of the Sacco and Vanzetti trial. Like those for his secular works, Shahn's Haggadah illustrations highlight the struggle against oppression, a theme central to the story of Passover. In 1965 Shahn reproduced these Passover drawings, which had already been acquired by the Jewish Museum, incorporating them into this extraordinary Haggadah. Shahn's year-long visit to Djerba, off the Tunisian coast, and his masterful calligraphy lend this Haggadah an oriental feel. Text in Hebrew and English. Only very mild discoloration to original box. A beautiful production in fine condition.

A fine copy with supplied later acetate wrapper, in the original slipcase, which is rubbed with tape repair at the corners, splitting at the top edge, and lacking a three-inch piece of the lower edge. Brancusi's frontispiece portrait, commissioned by the publishers Harry and Caresse Crosby, was a "Symbol of Joyce" intended to convey the sense of "enigmatic involution." Description
Copperplate engraving [83.5 x 55.5 cm], (1) folio. Fold marks, minor edge wear, otherwise a very good copy in very crisp, dark impression. Rare, large-format engraved print produced in 1730 as part of the celebrations of the 200th anniversary of the Augsburg Confession (1530), one of the foundational documents of Lutheranism. The subject of the print is the famous Tranquebar Mission in southern India, which was established by King Frederick IV of Denmark (1671-1730) and led by the German missionaries Bartholomäus Ziegenbalg (1682-1719) and Heinrich Plütschau (1676-1752), who are noted for having translated the Bible into Tamil and arranged for its printing. The engraving, executed by Johann Jacob Kleinschmidt after a design by Elias Riedinger, is a splendid example of 18th-century Augsburg printmaking. It takes as its compositional conceit a church altar surmounted by a framed retable. The image above the altar depicts the German missionaries preaching to an audience of natives; in the background of this scene can be glimpsed a statue of 'Biruma oder Brama' (Brahma). The elaborately carved frame of the retable is enlivened with vignettes illustrating the successes of the Lutheran mission, e.g., an Indian smashing an idol, a native being baptized, a domesticated elephant symbolizing the people under God's yoke, etc. Placed atop the altar are oval portraits of Ziegenbalg and Plütschau (their names written in Tamil) and the books they translated (an Indian bible, an Indian catechism, and an Indian hymnal). A map of southern India hangs on the front face of the altar. Flanking the altar are two young natives: the boy on the left holds the Danish Royal arms, and the boy on the right displays the architectural plan of the New Jerusalem Church in Tranquebar (built by the Germans and dedicated in 1719). In front of the altar are fallen symbols of the old dispensation. At the foot of the sheet is a poem in Latin and German celebrating the expansion of the Lutheran faith to all corners of the world. The engraving is one of several (quite ambitious) broadside prints produced in Augsburg to commemorate the bicentennial of the Augsburg Confession, some of which apparently reproduced paintings executed for the occasion. These rather disparate graphic productions were collected by Johann Michael Roth in 1730/31 and released as a small-edition composite volume with an added engraved title page reading Augspurgisches Iubel-Gedächtnüs. The contents of this (rather odd) production vary greatly from copy to copy. Kleinschmidt's Vorstellung der Evangelisch-Ost-Indischen Kirche engraving apparently was a commercial success, because in 1736, citing demand, he released a small-format version of the work (its composition slightly altered). OCLC locates U.S. examples of the Augspurgisches Iubel-Gedächtnüs at Illinois, Duke, Getty, Stanford, Princeton, Yale, Harvard, Emory, Concordia Seminary, and Cal. State Sutro. The Getty copy includes Kleinschmidt's Vorstellung der Evangelisch-Ost-Indischen Kirch, but it is not clear which other examples include this engraving. *Drugulin, Historischer Bilderatlas, 4112; S. Conklin's studies set the stage for a century of exploration of epigenetic mechanisms governing embryogenesis. A current publication reveals the cellular Spindle reorientation in response to mechanical stress is an emergent property of the spindle positioning mechanisms. Cited in: Kelkar M, et al., Proc Natl Acad Sci U S A. 2022 Jun 28;119(26):e2121868119. doi: 10.1073/pnas.2121868119. Epub 2022 Jun 21. This paper concludes, "spindle rotation in response to mechanical stress is an emergent phenomenon arising from the interaction between the spindle positioning machinery and the cell cortex. … Our study indicates that despite their transient nature, these stresses may be sufficient to reorient the axis of division of metaphase cells. Such a phenomenon may allow the tissue to optimize its organization to reduce stress in the direction of extension." EDWIN G. CONKLIN (1863 – 1952) carried out meticulous studies of cell lineage in marine organisms, including the slipper snail Crepidula. Much of that work took place at the Marine Biological Laboratory, where Conklin played important leadership roles and gained life-long friendships and collaborations. He was educated at Ohio Wesleyan University and Johns Hopkins University. He was professor of biology at Ohio Wesleyan (1891–94) and professor of zoology at Northwestern University (1894–96), the University of Pennsylvania (1896-1908), and Princeton University (1908-1935). He became coeditor of the Journal of Morphology, The Biological Bulletin, and the Journal of Experimental Zoology. In 1897, he was elected to the American Philosophical Society, and to the United States National Academy of Sciences in 1908. He was president of the American Society of Naturalists in 1912, became a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1914, and was president of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in 1936. He was elected a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1914. He also served on the board of trustees for Science Service, now known as Society for Science and the Public, from 1937 to 1952. In 1943, Conklin was awarded the John J. Carty Award from the National Academy of Sciences. In 1995, the Society for Developmental Biology inaugurated the Edwin Grant Conklin Medal in his honor.
