Description
[Esopus, N.Y.?], ca1883. Full gilt stamped dark blue morocco with gilt inner dentelles and marbled endpapers; ca 1930. Binder's stamp: Blackwood.. Near fine.. Royal 8vo, 29 leaves; autograph - in Burrough's hand, and signed. Each leaf neatly inset into a larger sheet and then bound. All the appearances of a working manuscript, with corrections, revisions, and insertions. It first appeared in the April 1883 issue of The Century and published in book form as the final piece in Fresh Fields in 1885. There are variations between this manuscript and the final printed version in Fresh Fields. Burroughs is best known for his naturalist writings and close friendship with Whitman. In his younger days he travelled to Jamaica, Bermuda, Hawaii, and Yosemite (with Muir). Fresh Fields was a product of these travels and it was fitting that this essay on sailing as an experience of distance and vacancy should be the final contribution included in that volume. A wonderful example of Burrough's sympathetic writings as a naturalist. DAB III, 330-334.

Bacon / [Nice large?] painting / from this original / sketch is in one of / the museums I have / forgotten where [which?]. Initials HB appear on the lower front left corner; dated in the right front corner. Henry Bacon was an American artist who worked for the Frank Leslie Weekly as a Civil War illustrator. Description
N.p. [France], [1915-1918?].. 203 snapshot photographs (6 cyanotype), mounted on rectos and versos of 18 hinged heavy card leaves (paginated 1-35 in pencil); 7 further leaves unused. Extensive captioned commentary and notes, in pen and pencil. Oblong sm. folio. Cloth. A skillful amateur's album of photographs of the War and its aftermath in Northern France. Focused emphatically on infantry casualties, it includes many images of military cemeteries and of the dead heaped in the trenches, as well as of young soldiers posing coolly with corpses and skulls. Also included are pictures of military automobile traffic in Orléans, Versailles and Nancy, barbed wire blockades, devastated fields and forests, ruined houses at Mouilly (Meuse), soldiers' mealtimes at encampments, and several scenes of battle at Les Esparges. Opening with formally calligraphed title-page (with a photograph of a wooden cross), it includes three pages with finished captions and headings in ink; thereafter, the notes are in pencil, presumably to be completed in ink at a later date.

Description
Lucca: Salvatore & Giandomenico Marescandoli e Compagni, 1782. 18mo? (145 x 101 mm). Collation: A24 (vertical chainlines). 48 pp. Crude title woodcut of a musician serenading a woman at her window, archaic woodcut headpiece and two initials. Mostly light dampstaining (heavier at end), short marginal tear to title. Contemporary carta rustica wrappers.*** Apparently unrecorded chapbook edition of a collection of popular love poems, serenades, and other rhythmic verses, to be set to music, most if not all by the 16th-century Florentine writing and arithmetic master, poet, and self-identified bookseller Giovanni Battista Verini. As is invariably the case for chapbook printing, the rarity of surviving copies of all editions of these popular poems is a direct reflection of their wide distribution and readership; most copies were read to shreds and discarded. The Marescandoli dynasty of publisher-printers in Lucca spanned three centuries, remaining active from 1654 to 1805. Around 800 editions bearing their imprint are known; they were also booksellers, disposing, in 1766, of a warehouse containing over 186,000 individual books (Marcazzani, p. 2). The Marescandoli name, noted the author of a modern doctoral thesis on the family (loc. cit.), was “synonymous with poor printing,” i.e., they were purveyors of cheap books for sale throughout the rural regions of Tuscany. Grandsons of the founder Francesco Marescandoli, the brothers Salvatore e Giandomenico worked together for no less than 60 years; in 1765 they took on an associate, and continued printing under the present imprint from 1767 until 1782, when they ceded the firm to Domenico Marescandoli (op. cit., p. 5). This collection of love poems by one considered a poet of the “populace,” was apparently a staple of the Marescandoli presses: in 1766 their inventory listed 500 copies of what was known in shorthand as the “Ardor” (Marcazzani, p. 31), but very few copies of these slim chapbooks survive. None are listed in the ICCU OPAC or in USTC. OCLC lists two copies of a different edition, with the imprint of Domenico, thus after 1782, held by Wellesley College and the Biblioteca Casatanese. Cf. G. Marcazzani, I Marescandoli di Lucca: l'azienda, il catalogo (Pisa University, 2012), dissertation, online; cf. Stanley Morison, “Some New Light on Verini,” Newberry Library Bulletin III (1953), pp, 41-45.

Collivetti, Pescia: Convento dell’Osservaza, 1965. 7 Issues.  Folio.  330 x 220 mm., [13 x 8 ¾ inches]. Bound with original card stock wrappers with illustrated titles, mimeographed text with illustrations, printed on rectos only; stapled.  First three issues are printed on tan paper later ones also on pink and blue paper.  Wrappers scuffed a little on the edges with minor foxing and staining; tiny tears in margins. 1965:  Year I:  Issue No. I, 20 unnumbered sheets.  No. II, 26 pp.  No. III, 32 pp., with an interleaved unnumbered leaf.  1966:  Year II:  Issue No. I, 33 pp.  No. II, 29 pp.  No III, title, 25 pp., [1]. 1967:  Year III:  Issue No. 1, 31 pp. Very good copy of this rare set of mimeographed Zines, published by the novices at the Franciscan Monastery in Colleviti, Pescia, Italy.  The Nuove Frontiere (New Boundaries) contains various reports, travelogues, poems, and short texts on mostly religious subjects, along with numerous humorous illustrations.  It includes notes on the impact of the reforms initiated by Vatican Council II; an essay on Dante, a letter to members of the monastery with images of JFK, St. Francis, and John XXIII; a report of travels to Naples and the churches that were visited; a letter home to mother; an essay on life as a novitiate and more. What distinguishes the short magazine articles are the illustrations that accompany the text.  They are amateur drawings, many caricatures of members of the community, and images of events that appear in the text.  It is fun, playful, and joyful ZINE published by a most unusual source.  The Convento dell’Osservaza in Pescia is a beautiful Franciscan convent founded in 1494, dedicated to Saint Ludovicus, with beautiful art and an old library, now a center for drug rehabilitation.

The covers are a trifle cocked. With the illustrated dust jacket showing little wear. In the publisher's original thin card slipcase, in very good condition, with moderate edgewear. From the dust jacket- "Joy Adamson is known to millions by her books describing the story of Elsa, the Kenya lioness, and her cubs. This volume tells of another and equally remarkable experience. It reveals her gift as an artist and shows that she is as interested in people as she is in animals. A talented painter of flowers, when she first came to Kenya she made many paintings of the flora of the country. But soon she wanted to portray also the African tribesmen, with their traditional ornaments. The undertaking demanded courage, endurance, tact, and a great capacity for work. She would need to spend a long time in isolated places, often among people not immediately willing to pose as models... "After she started off on her own financial risk, the Kenya authorities commissioned her to make a comprehensive pictorial record of the traditional costumes of the African tribes. She spent six and a half years traveling and living among the different peoples of Kenya. During that period she created a unique record of ornamental costumes fast disappearing under the impact of modern life.

Description
Beijing, China: Foreign Languages Press, (1989). First Edition, thus. Octavo, slick brown boards (hardcover), gilt letters, ribbon marker, 496 pp. Former-owner bookplate; otherwise, Fine, in a Very Good+ dust jacket with sunned spine. From dust jacket: From Emperor to Citizen is the autobiography of the man who was the last emperor of China and later, puppet emperor of “Manchukuo,” Japanese imperialism’s pseudo-state in China’s Northeast. The book begins with the author giving a vivid picture of the last, decadent days of the Ching court. He reveals ho, after the overthrow of the dynasty, he and other feudal forces plotted with foreign powers to restore the monarchy, and how he became the Japanese imperialists’ puppet. He then goes on to describe his life as “Emperor of Manchukuo” and tells how he came into the hands of the Chinese people’s government. He gives a lively account of his remoulding through labour and study in prisons for war criminals, relating how his thinking changed. The final chapter tells about his new life after his pardon as an ordinary citizen of People’s China.
