Description
n.p.: Condorpers [Peter Hendriks (Typography and Printing); WIlma van Ipenburg (Binder)], 2007. Limited Edition. Hardcover. Fine. Anke Ligteringen. No. IX (total edition not stated), square quarto size, [48] pp., note that text is in Dutch with English translation. A fascinating artist book which is a perfect marriage of custom binding, photography, poetry, and calligraphy. Text is letterpress printed, in Dutch, with corresponding English calligraphically lettered. The work is a collaborative effort by Inez Meter (author), Anke Ligteringen (photography), Peter Hendriks (typographer/printer), and Wilma van Ipenburg (binding). Of each we could find little information online except for Anke Ligteringen, a Gouda artist, who passed away in 2013. The book was "[p]rinted on the occasion of Kunstmoment in Gouda and the exhibition of Fishing and Nets in Vlaardingen". In Gouda a cultural exhibit, an "Art Moment", is held regularly, with artists and galleries throughout the city exhibiting their art; this book was clearly made for exhibit at the 2007 festival. The entire work is an homage to the sea and fishing; from the binding, to the photographs of fishing nets and sealife, to the poetry. The poems are short, haiku-like stanzas: "a buffer / alongside the boat / the brush of a painter / a buffer / between ship and quay". Stated to be "copy IX" (total edition not stated), however, we see no other copies available. ___DESCRIPTION: Bound in half taupe skin (snake?), the front fore-edge of black leather with the title blind-debossed and the board itself covered with a glazed cloth with a photographic image, the back board entirely of black leather, black endpapers, all pages of heavy black paper, the title page, titles of the poems, and limitations pages with silver lettering, organized with the title of the photograph in silver on the verso (left) and the photograph itself mounted onto the facing page (recto) upon a background of silver mottling - following this, on the recto of the next leaf, the black paper on the right-hand side has been imprinted with silver mottling surrounding the letterpress printing of the poem in Dutch with, on the left-hand side, is tipped-in a half-sheet of white translucent paper upon which the English translation has been calligraphically lettered in black; the book contains a total of eleven pairs of the photography and poems, titled "netwerk" (network), "koraal" (coral), "gereedschap" (tools/buffer), "protest" (protest), "diepblauw" (deep blue), "blind" (blind), "heimwee" (nostalgia), "maaltijd" (meal), "gom gom" (gum gum), "doolhof" (labyrinth) and "elastiscsh" (springy); square quarto size (10 3/8" by 10 1/4"), with twenty-four leaves of black paper and eleven tipped-in half-sheets. ___CONDITION: Fine, the skin and leather binding smooth and supple, the binding clean, straight corners without rubbing, a strong, square text block with solid hinges, the interior is clean and bright, and entirely free of prior owner markings; other than a very light stray mark or two on the back board, absolutely as new, clean and fresh. ___POSTAGE: International customers, please note that additional postage may apply as the standard does not always cover costs; please inquire for details. ___Swan's Fine Books is pleased to be a member of the ABAA, ILAB, and IOBA and we stand behind every book we sell. Good. Light toning, water staining and dust soiling, minor rust staining from staples.
Description
St. Louis, Missouri: Newell Pharmacal Company, 1920. Good. Light toning, water staining and dust soiling, minor rust staining from staples.. A printed booklet promoting a "home remedy positively guaranteed to remove all desire and craving for tobacco in any form" (i.e. a cure for tobacco addiction). The booklet begins: "Tobacco Slaves. Are you one? Are you getting tired paying daily tribute to that inexorable master-- King Tobacco? And do you often wish that you could find some quick, sure way of breaking the chain that holds you fast?" (p. [1]). Provides fascinating insight into how people spoke about addiction at the time, insisting it was a "habit" and not a "disease", while at the same time prescribing a medical cure/treating it like a disease to be cured. Also includes testimonials for the treatment, which appears to be a powder and lozenge. Single vol. (6.25" by 3.25"), pp. 24, in original illus. wrps with image of a warrior and a tobacco leaf on the front.

Description
Boston: Houghton Mifflin. Near Fine in Very Good+ dj. 1946. First Edition. Hardcover. [nice-looking copy, slight fading to cloth along top edges, pencilled gift inscription from 1951 (in child's hand) on half-title page but otherwise unmarked; jacket shows minor wear at edges/corners, a couple of itsy-bitsy tears at top edge]. "Once there was a baron whose whole name was Baron Frederick Charles Henry Maximilian Francis Avoirdupois. But his name was not easy to remember, so everyone called him The Fat Baron -- and he certainly was fat. More than anything else in the world he liked to eat. Then along came Sir Reginald the Fierce, who saw The Fat Baron's plump cows and chickens, and attacked the castle. While Sir Reginald lived off the fat of The Fat Baron's land, the poor besieged Fat Baron grew thinner and thinner -- because there was nothing left in the castle to eat but a few weeds the cook boiled up for dinner." .

Description
Dallas, TX: Taylor Publishing, (1993). First Edition. Signed and inscribed by the Author. Quarto, blue cloth (hardcover), silver lettering, map illustrated endpapers, unpaginated. Fine in a Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: A stunning personal celebration of one of the most beautiful regions of the United States, Mountains in the Mist reflects the glories of the Great Smokies -- its people, its wildlife and flora, its way of life. Award-winning artist Roger Bansemer takes you through this breathtaking region and captures its many facets. Bansemer explores a vanishing way of life on the farms of the Smokies, revealing how the region’s early settlers withstood nature’s trials. Remnants of their lives linger, in quiet churchyards or abandoned mills. He meets the farmers and inhabitants who live there today and forge a new living with the spirit of the past. As James Michener says in his foreword, “It’s lucky he came along when he did and took the pains he did. Because ten years from now this record might be lost.” Bansemer brings to life the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, from the Pioneer Farmstead and its living history of the early pioneers to the spectacular natural vistas -- roaring waterfalls and hushed woods, cool, dusky streams and brilliant autumn-fired trees, dusty dirt roads and breathtaking gorges. And the wildlife: the black bear, the dangerous copperhead, red salamanders, great horned owl, rainbow trout, and deer. A wildflower gallery showcases some of the most beautiful flora of the Great Smokies, along with fascinating trivia about them: Joe Pye weed, bloodroot, yellow-fringed orchid, birdsfoot violet, creeping phlox, rhododendron, and more. Bansemer looks at the forest floor and the tiny lives there -- plants like mosses and ferns, animals like the vole -- and on to the mountains in the mist -- the Great Smokies -- that punctuate every scene. Tallulah Gorge. Looking Glass Falls. Fontana Village. Cades Cove. Little Pigeon River. These natural treasures and so many more endear millions of visitors to the Great Smokies each year. For those who’ve been to the Smokies, Mountains in the Mist is a fitting album of memories, and for those who haven’t, this is an irresistible invitation to go.
