Description
[Osnaburg, Stark County, Ohio]: [Heinrich Kurtz], [1837]. First Edition.. Original muslin backed marbled paper over boards.. Very good; some spotting. 8vo, 57, [3 - index] pp. The book is signed with numbers and bound in fours with an inserted bifolium in each signature signed with the number and an asterisk. Thus there are 6 leaves in each of the five signatures. The paper is not watermarked. A most unusual manual of folk remedies and herbal compounds that contains 470 numbered paragraphs of succinct medical formulae, cures and advice for man and animals. The copy offered here is without the title page that bears the Kurtz imprint. The listed title is taken from the copy at the NLM (http://resource.nlm.nih.gov/8308472). At some point close to the publication date the title page was omitted or cancelled. After inspection of the title page in another copy it is worth noting that it was printed from an engraved plate and inserted. Kurtz may have run out of copies to insert. So what appears in the text is the truncated drop-title at the head of the text on page 1, thus omitting the imprint and title reference to the manuscripts of the famous Virginia physician that are, as Kurtz claimed, the basis for the text. The copy offered here is bound in a contemporary cloth backed boards. A coarse type of muslin was used as the backing and is the same on the three copies that have come into our possession. The bindings are identical on all the copies (the pattern and color of the marbled paper are the same on two copies with the third having a color variant in the marbling). The books derive from one source, and appear to have been bound in this manner so that they could be offered while masking the printer and the origin. The book is unlike anything Kurtz printed during his career (see Durnbaugh, "Henry Kurtz, Man of the Book" in Ohio History, v. 76, #3, 1967) - i.e., religious periodicals, hymnals, ABCs.

Description
Vineland, NJ: American Institute for Mental Studies, The Training School Unit, Wednesday, May 22, 1968. Signed by Pearl S. Buck and James A. Michener. Octavo, paperbound (stapled, printed wrappers), [8] pp. Very Good, with foxing (age darkened spotting) and shadowed edges. Program for Vineland Day has had its upper cover signed by both James A. Michener and Pearl S. Buck. As noted on underside of upper cover: We are fotunate to again have with us on Vineland Day the distinguished President of the Board of Trustees of the AMerican Institute for Mental Studies, Pearl S. Buck. She has long been active in work for retarded children. In 1950 she published a small book entitled The Child Who Never Grew -- the story of her own experience with her eldest daughter whose mental growth was retarded. This was written first, as an article for the Ladies Home Journal, to help parents of other retarded cihldren. It was reprinted in the Reader’s Digest and was subsequently published in more than a dozen languages. This personal narrative has done much to educate the public in the cause of the mentally handicapped. [And, later in the publication]: Today’s Guest of Honor and featured speaker is a person whose talents reflect a great love and understanding of his fellow man. His reputation as a celebrated Pulitzer prize winning author is universally recognized. His deep concern for those deprived in any respect is known as well. A teacher, author, historian, world traveler and humanitarian, Mr. Michener attributes his greatest motivation to his boyhood years in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. No matter how far his travels have taken him he still refers to this picturesque Quaker setting as “Home Country” and resides there presently. Mr. Michener’s literary works include Sayonara, The Bridge at Toko-Ri, Hawaii, The Source, and others. His Return to Paradise was the basis for the long running TV series Adventures in Paradise. Perhaps his best known book is Tales of the South Pacific, which was transformed into one of the greatest Broadway musicals ever produced. Mr. Michener’s latest effort, Iberia, was released by Random House earlier this month. His writings reflect his great perceptiveness which is never obscured by the culture that provides the background for his stories. We of the NJSFWC and AIMS welcome him and are honored by his presence today.

Description
Kansas City, Missouri: The Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art, 2007. Hardcover. Both volumes fine/fine. Both volumes: slate cloth/boards; silver lettering. Color-illus. dust jackets with white lettering on red title block; Mylar covers. Volume 1: 559 pp.; Volume 2: 280 pp.; both volumes with color frontis and color/bw plates and figures throughout. Heavy at 13 pounds and will require extra postage. Showcasing one of the nation's finest collections of American art, this remarkable two-volume set features 267 exceptional paintings reproduced in full color and illuminated with never-before-published research findings. Works span American history from the colonial period through the close of World War II and are by many of the nation's best-known artists, including Mary Cassatt, Thomas Cole, Childe Hassam, Winslow Homer, Edward Hopper, and Georgia O'Keeffe. Pre-1900 subject strengths reside in portraiture with canvases by John Singleton Copley, John Singer Sargent, and Henry Ossawa Tanner; still lifes by John Peto and Severin Roesin; and landscapes from the brushes of Frederic Edwin Church, Martin Johnson Heade, Fitz Henry Lane, Thomas Moran, and others. Scenes and portraits by artists including John Steuart Curry, Robert Henri, Peter Hurd, Maurice Prendergast, and John Sloan provide honest, enduring assessments of early 20th-century American life. A stunning sample of early Modernism is seen in important canvasses by Albert Bloch, Stuart Davis, Arthur Dove, and Marsen Hartley, to name a few. Volume 1 includes 140 extended essays on the most important canvases in the collection, which are represented in full-page color reproductions. Volume 2 reproduces in color all the works in the collection and is accompanied by thorough technical notes based on recent object examination, complete provenance, listings of directly related works, and exhaustive exhibition and publication histories. American Paintings is an outstanding resource and a beautifully illustrated record of our country's history and culture.
