[Seoul]: Pich’ŏndang 丕闡堂 Building, Sŏnggyun’gwan [today’s Sungkyunkwan University], 1872. First edition and very rare; WorldCat lists only the Berkeley copy. “Scroll” is clearly used here as a figure of speech, as this is a codex-style book, printed using movable (metal or wooden?) type in 1872. Sungkyunkwan, established in 1398, was the highest educational institution in Chosŏn Korea. It is now the sight of an eponymous university. The location of the printing of this book was Pich’ŏndang, a building at Sungkyunkwan. In the interview described in the title, the young king Kojong (1852-1919, ruled 1864-1907) was querying his subjects on Confucius’s Analects. Different sources give somewhat different information on the set of type used. The online catalogue for Changsŏgak (Jangseogak), which has a copy, says that wooden type was used, whereas the printed catalogue for Korean books at UC Berkeley (see reference at bottom) says that it is newly cast metal type (but the WorldCat entry for this copy states that wooden movable type was used). To our eyes, the type appears to be metal due to the extreme fineness and clarity of the characters. All sources agree, however, that the model for the type is the so-called chŏngnija type, first cast under Chŏngjo in 1796. The name of the type is a reference to one of the first books printed with it: Chŏngni ŭigwe 整理儀軌 [Arranged Royal Protocols], documenting Chŏngjo’s visit to his father’s tomb. The models for the character shapes used in that set of type were the characters in Kangxi zidian 康熙字典 [Character Standard of the Reign of Secure Peace], a landmark Chinese dictionary published at the Qing court in 1716. The original set of type was destroyed in 1857, so this book was printed with the new set. At the back of the volume is a manuscript colophon that we have had great difficulty deciphering, even with the help of a knowledgeable friend. The colophon recounts events in the “eleventh month of the sinmi year,” corresponding to 12 December 12 1871 to 9 January 1872, and then early in the second month of the following year, meaning March 1872. At this time, the author of the colophon was present as the king ascended to the throne at Myŏngnyundang 明倫堂 [Hall for Elucidating the Moral Order] at Sŏnggyun’gwan, upon which the king composed a quatrain of classical Chinese verse. The text appears to continue to describe the events of that day, and then mentions that a book, titled kaengjaech’uk — probably the present book — was printed and should be distributed to the eight provinces. We cannot say anything for certain about this colophon since we are unable to read much of it, but it seems possible that it was written close to the date of printing by someone who was present on the day the exchange between king Kojong and the officials took place. The printed text cited above appears immediately below this flag, and the crew patch below this text. JOHN YOUNG (1930-2018) signs boldly in black ink to the left of the patch, while ROBERT L. CRIPPEN (born 1937) signs to the right. The Columbia STS-1 flight was called by NASA "The boldest test flight in history." It was the first orbital flight of the Space Shuttle program, lasting 54½ hours and orbiting the Earth 37 times; commanded by John Young and piloted by Robert Crippen, it was the first to use solid-fuel rockets in a U.S. manned launch. These rare relics were presented to Illinois' then-senator, ADLAI E. STEVENSON III (1930-2021), who was instrumental in guiding U.S. space policy.

Spines evenly sunned to a light brown (as usual with green morocco), a hint of sunning to top inch of three covers, faint offsetting from engravings, other trivial imperfections, but A FINE SET, clean and fresh internally, IN LUSTROUS, UNWORN BINDINGS. In handsome morocco finished by one of the finest binders of the day, this is an extremely appealing set of two poetic works with illustrations of considerable interest. Born in 1859, finisher Charles McLeish was apprenticed to Andrew Grieve in Edinburgh, then came to London to work for the prestigious Riviere firm. When Cobden-Sanderson founded the Doves Bindery in 1893, he hired McLeish as the firm's finisher; McLeish held that estimable position until 1909, when he left to go into partnership with his son, also named Charles, who had apprenticed under Roger de Coverly. McLeish's expertise in applying the gilt decoration to bindings is evident here in the intricate tooling of the spine compartments, which required applying individual small tools dozens of times, and doing so with such exactness that only the most careful inspection will spot a couple of minute variations between one compartment and another. The scion of a wealthy banking family, Samuel Rogers (1763-1855) first achieved fame with the publication in 1792 of "The Pleasures of Memory." After Italian travels, during which he met Shelley and Byron in Pisa, Rogers produced a first version of "Italy" in 1822 and issued a sequel in 1826, both of which sold poorly. He destroyed the unsold copies, revised the poems, and published them at his own expense in the present edition of 1830 (our first volume), embellished this time by illustrations. These were the work of two artists with very different propensities--Stothard (1755-1834), who did demure figure scenes, and Turner (1775-1851), who provided landscape vignettes. The success of this edition was perhaps due as much to the artists as to the poet. Britannica describes Rogers as a "witty conversationalist" who "maintained an influential position as a leading figure in London society and as a generous host to brilliant company." Bound in here is an invitation to tea at his lovely home at 22 St James's Place: "Dear Katherine / If you & Miss Mallet / & Wm. have nothing better to do, / pray come & drink tea with me / next Sunday, the earlier the better. / Yours very truly, Saml Rogers / St. James's Place / Thursday Evg." It is possible "Katherine" was London socialite Katherine Jane Canning, daughter of British diplomat Stratford Canning, 1st Viscount Stratford de Redcliffe; Rogers inscribed a copy of the 1845 edition of his poems to her, according to auction records..

Professionally, Honey was an aerospace engineer for Hughes Aircraft (with a security clearance) and a pioneer in hypnotism training in California (he operated the first school approved by the California State Board of Education). After retiring from Hughes Aircraft, Honey operated a television repair ship in Ontario, California, for nearly two decades. Bérenger was in his lifetime considered the national poet of France who owed his lifelong popularity to his light-hearted verses, some of which are included in this collection.Originally published in 1842-43 by H. Delloye in parts (each part consists of four engraved plates of text and illustrations with accompanying printed pages of commentary and music), it is generally regarded as one of the finest illustrated books of the Romantic period and is often compared with the masterpieces of 18th century book illustration. Gordon Ray devotes several pages to it, reproducing four illustrations (two, full page), one of which is by Daubigny, "Indeed, those of which he himself engraved have a high rank as original prints." Ray goes on to add that copies in their original part-wrappers are very rare (the Otto Schäfer copy sold at Sotheby's 27 July 95 for £5,800.), and that copies in the publisher's cartonnage in fine state have become scarce, "...and prices for them have soared."
