Description
Los Angeles: privately printed, 1915. FIRST PRINTING. Original wrappers, title in black on front cover, stapled and tied with piece of silk string as issued. Presentation copy with the author’s signature to Mrs. Mary M. Bowman on the fly-leaf. First printing. Ahasuerus: A Race Tragedy is an epic poem loosely based on the Biblical Book of Esther. It tells the story of the Persian king Ahasuerus as he wanders through the desert encountering some of the characters of the Bible. One of the poem’s themes is the reconciliation of Gentile and Jew. Ahasuerus, a royal Persian name, occurs throughout the Old Testament. Immediately preceding Artaxerxes I in the line of Persian kings, Ahasuerus is evidently to be identified with Xerxes. Ahasuerus appears most prominently in the Book of Esther, and the intrigues of the king’s court provide the biblical origin of the festival of Purim. The Jews of the Persian empire were threatened with destruction due to the machinations of Haman, the chief minister to Ahasuerus. Queen Esther uses her influence with the king to thwart the plot, however, and the Jews were instead given royal sanction to attack their enemies. Widney (1841-1938) was an educator, philanthropist, religious leader and doctor who championed the development of Los Angeles in the nineteenth century. He was the second president of the University of Southern California and was one of the founders of the Church of the Nazarene. He was also a founder of the Los Angeles Library Association. His politics and racial beliefs were controversial, and he was said to be the model for an oil baron in Upton Sinclair's novel Oil! Although Widney advocated for the recognition of the potential power of minorities, especially in Southern California, there is some amount of anti-Semitism lurking within the poem. Despite Widney's contributions to Southern California culture, he was also known as an advocate of Eugenics and argued for Aryan superiority; His writings are still heavily quoted by white supremacists. Widney’s books are quite rare on the market. Only one of his works, Race life of the Aryan peoples, was published commercially.

Description
Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. No binding. Near Fine. [Los Angeles]: Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer, [1935]. Set of four vintage original black-and-white photos, of which three are 8 x 10" (20 x 25 cm) and one is 13 1/4 x 8 1/2" (34 x 21 cm). Overall near fine. MGM director Tod Browning remade his lost silent film London After Midnight (1927) into a sound film, taking advantage of Bela Lugosi's earlier appearance in Dracula (1931). Mark of the Vampire features a twist ending and outstanding performances by Bela Lugosi as the sinister Count and Carroll Borland as his equally evil and enchanting daughter, Luna. This collection features two impressive double weight matte photographs, both stamped on the back and credited to MGM photographer Stephen McNulty. One photograph shows Lugosi, with a fresh bullet wound on his forehead, portraying Count Mora. Accompanying him are Carroll Borland as his vampiric daughter Luna, along with Elizabeth Allen and Henry Wadsworth, who play their victims. The second double weight photo captures a striking atmospheric shot of Borland gazing at the viewer while standing over the unconscious body of Wadsworth. Additionally, there is one set reference photograph labeled "Int. Castle Hallway" and two photos that have been taped together on the back to form a single 13.5 x 8.5 in. set reference photo of the same set. The photo featuring Lugosi has a faint outline of a small paperclip along the upper border, while the image of Borland and Wadsworth displays slight wear on its upper edge. The set reference photo is noted as a "Proof", with a number handwritten on the upper border. This is an exceptional collection of vintage original photographs from one of the few horror films produced by MGM in the 1930s.

TLS. Hobson was an admiral in the United States Navy and a congressman representing Alabama from 1905-1915. TLS. 1pg. 8" x 10 ". March 20, 1907. Washington D.C. A typed letter signed "R.P. Hobson" addressed to New York lawyer and peace advocate Hayne Davis: "My plans have finally been settled. I go to the Educational Conference at Pinehurst, N.C. for the 9, 10, 11, and 12 of April and return for the Peace Congress, leaving immediately after the Peace Congress for my canvass in Alabama. Therefore, I should think you could arrange the Saunders meeting without any trouble. Please let me know if there is to be any meeting on Sunday 14. I have not heard from you as to the action taken with regard to the resolution before the Legislatures. I hope this has been attended to either by the ____ or else by you, on the _____ scale we agreed upon. I was very sorry not to be able to attend the dinner Thursday night to meet the executive committee." Hobson handwrote some notes on the letter, which is on "House of Representatives" stationery. The National Arbitration and Peace Congress was convened in New York from April 14 to 16, 1907. The conference brought together government officials, intellectuals, and prominent societal figures. The meeting was successful in arousing public interest on the issue of peace and raising questions regarding the position to be taken by United States at the Second Peace Conference held at The Hague, Netherlands in October of that year. The letter has the usual mailing folds and is in fine condition

Pamphlet, 8vo, original printed paper wrappers, illustrated, 31,[1] pp. Creased a bit in the center, slight fading; otherwise very good plus. While it is believed to have its origins in England or the Netherlands, bundling is probably best know as a courting practice in colonial America. In fact, Some historians believe that the practice was more common in parts of Pennsylvania. Since dating wasn't much of an option in the 'good old days', couples were allowed to sleep together, often wrapped in blankets to provide a level of intimacy before marriage, but prohibiting sex. To really ensure no sex was possible, a bundling board may have been used too. The author of this work attempts to provide some historical context to the practice.

Description
New York/Toronto: Farrar & Rinehart, Inc.. Very Good in Fair dj. (c.1942). 2nd printing. Hardcover. [a decent copy, but with noticeable wear to the extremities, half-title page partially stuck to front pastedown; the jacket has suffered paper loss along the top and bottom edges and the spine, and the rear panel is blemished by a number of old yellowed tape repairs (the jacket is pretty much held together by a paper-lined jacket protector, which was on the book when acquired by us, and which we have chosen not to replace in order not to risk further damage)]. "Here is the great romantic, adventurous, robust saga of the logging days on the Mississippi; a story of the huge drives that floated down from the north with the breaking ice each spring, and the white glistening streamers with their girls and their gambling wheels that met the raftsmen at the lumber towns on the upper river. [It's] the epic of the empire of lumber, of fortunes made and lost, of forces and deeds that changed the face of a continent, of the lives and loves and bitter struggles of the men and women whose life was the Mississippi and lumber." .

New York:: Viking, 1998., 1998. 8vo. x, 198 pp. Index. Quarter slate cloth, gray boards, dust jacket. Very good. ISBN: 0670869899 "In a less-than-subtle anti-science polemic, London Times columnist Appleyard (Understanding the Present) addresses some of the myriad ramifications of our expanding knowledge of genetics. ""Concealed within the knowledge we are now acquiring are insights that may be profoundly socially divisive and which could overthrow the basis on which the wealth and stability of Western democracies are constructed,"" is one of his many pronouncements. Appleyard adequately explores some of the obvious ethical implications sure to be present in a future in which our genetic makeups are known to all and possibly open to manipulation: selective abortion of fetuses not to the liking of prospective parents; the refusal of insurance companies to cover individuals with genetic predispositions for certain disorders; the inevitable quagmire in the criminal justice system when criminals argue that their genes forced them to act in an antisocial manner. His main point, however, is that the social implications of science are far too important to be left solely to the scientists. But try as he might to whip this thesis into a controversy, most readers will find it a straw man, as few scientists disagree with Appleyard's view. There are many, however, who would argue strenuously with his overly simplified attacks on scientists and the scientific method--for example, that ""[i]n order to become scientific, we must become inhuman."" Try telling that to Einstein, Tagore or Bohm. (Aug.)" – Publisher's Weekly. CONTENTS: Women's health / Adele E. Clarke --Pathways of health and death / Lois M.
