Description
London: Richard Bentley & Son, New Burlington Street, 1880. First Edition. 2 vols., 8vo (187 × 137mm), pp. [4], 258, [2]; [4], 238, [2]. Publisher's smooth russet cloth over boards with a decorative design blocked in black, lettered in gold on the spines. Light rubbing to the extremities, very light foxing and offsetting to the free endpapers; a bright, near fine set. A scarce set. Fetherstonhaugh's (née Carleton) second romantic tragedy, after Kilcorran, also published by Bentley. More precisely a sensation novel than a conventional romance, Alan Dering belongs to the later Victorian afterlife of the genre, where emotional extremity, concealed motives, and personal catastrophe remained central attractions.

Description
Peking: Foreign Languages Press, 1954. First Edition. 1st edition in English. Original silk over boards, spine faded half a shade, else near fine, in a jacket with chips at the edges, and a short pen line to the front panel, else very good. I am no panegyrist of Ting Ling (1904?–1986), in fact I know nothing about her, beyond her oft–altered biography, but she was “the” Chinese feminist novelist, and the ultimate Asian uberfrau, bravery indeed in China under Mao. She was a prodigy at Shanghai and Peking Universities and at 28 was appointed editor of the official left wing writer’s journal, but in 1933, her outspoken contempt for male chauvinism earned her 3 years in a Kuomintang prison. A book of stories (When I was in Sha Cuan, 1945) was greeted with the Chinese revolutionary equivalent of rock star popularity, followed by the expected Party discipline (status is measured by deference). Seeking a subject dear to the heart of the Party line, and harmonious with her own sense of integrity, she moved to the countryside, and found an intellectually defensible Communist success story. The result was this novel (1948), a virtuoso study of land reform, which won the Stalin Prize in 1951. Her return to favor included membership on the Cultural and Educational Council, command of the editing department at the China Federation of Literary and Art Circles, and Vice–Chairpersonship of the Union of Chinese Writers. Of course, she used her position to increase the pitch of her attacks on male hegemony in the family, and the government. Faster than you can say “Animal Farm” tolerance turned to exasperation, and in 1958 she was purged and sent to raise chickens in the Heilongjiang reclamation area. By 1970 she was in a Communist prison, then reluctantly released in 1975, and finally rehabilitated as “too old to cause trouble” in 1979.

Small border tear at mid right-side margin and at mid bottom white margin. Very good. This unusual portrait of Mary Astor is most likely for her 1929 Fox film THE WOMAN FROM HELL, in which she played a carnival performer known as the "devil" who sells kisses. When things go awry, she is rescued and marries her hero. Astor appears to be quite tawdry in this portrait ,which has her name stamp on the verso as well as the Fox Film Argentina stamp. 300.00 WALTER-FILM005816

Description
ALS. 2pg. 5 x 8. Sunday. No Place. A rare autograph letter signed J.T. Ford to Mr. Wright, discussing theater business: Your anticipated and promised letter did not arrive. Respecting Mrs. Bowers engagement, I will give her the terms for time in January and Feb. which will be in the least profitable part of the Season. I will certainly press her engagement with great vigor and endeavor successfully to make her a permanent Star favorite in the two cities. With this much understood leave from her if she accepts my offer I will locate the precise day of the commencement in reply after I hear positively from her. Mr. Tayleune has written a most admirable new version of East Lyme and is now engaged on some other dramatizations which I think will be very popular. Mrs. B. have them to read at an early period. Write me immediately. It is likely this was written to John B. Wright, the stage manager at the Ford Theater when Lincoln was shot. Ford was discussing an appearance by Elizabeth Crocker Bowers (1830-1895), a popular American actress in the mid-Nineteenth Century. Other than a paper clip impression on the top margin, the letter is in fine condition and has a bold signature in black ink.

Description
Philadelphia: Published by Clara F. Cutbush, 1825. 4to. 215 x 135 mm., (8 1/2 x 5 1/2 inches). xliv, 610, [1] pp. Illustrated with one engraved plate. Contemporary calf, joints cracked and a bit weak, leather dry, edges rubbed; foxing throughout but paper stock flexible First edition of the first book on American book on rockets and fireworks. It was published and edited by the author's wife Clara, after his death in 1823. James Cutbush was a Philadelphia chemist, teacher and military man who was appointed the chief medical officer at West Point where he taught chemistry and mineralogy. He was the author of Philosophy of Experimental Chemistry (1813), The American Artist's Manual a study of the practical and industrial arts (1814) and a Treatise on Pyrotechnics (1825). Cutbush was a correspondent with Thomas Jefferson about the practical application of science and in 1813 wrote to him citing his research on The American Artist's Manual, and requests Jefferson's opinion of his work. Cutbush work is organized in four parts. The first deals with the substances used in the formation of fireworks with emphasis on the chemical composition and interaction of natural substances. Part two is on the construction of cartridges, cylinders and cases which hold the chemical compounds and the tools and laboratory facilities required to manufacture live shells. The third part deals with fireworks, their various uses both in the military and for exhibition. This part has an emphasis on producing visual excitement with the addition of colors and designs of the explosive. The final part includes and index and vocabulary of French terms. New York: Printed for Private Circulation by Charles W. Frederickson, 1860. 8vo.  245 x 150 mm., [9 ½  x 5 ½ inches].  32 pp. Unopened copy in original drab green paper wrappers; wrappers soiled and some chips to the edges, otherwise a very good copy. "This reprint is dedicated to the Admirers of Mr. J. Payne Collier, in the United States, by C. W. Frederickson, who appreciates his character as an Honest Man, an Accomplished Scholar, and a Worthy Elucidator of the Text of Shakespeare." The author of  "An Inquiry" was  Nicholas Hamilton, member of the Manuscript Department of the British Museum working under the direction of Sir Frederic Madden, Keeper of the Collection.  His analysis of the annotations and manuscript notes in the so-called Perkins Folio of Shakespeare's Works (1632), concluded they were forgeries of a modern date.  J. Payne Collier, the noted Shakespeare scholar had submitted in an essay entitled, Notes and Emendations to the Text of Shakespeare (1853), that the manuscript notes were of by a contemporary hand and based on direct knowledge of Shakespeare and his working life in the theater.  Hamilton's Inquiry also challenged the authenticity of many of the documents that Collier had 'found' during his nearly 20 years working as a Shakespeare Scholar. Charles W. Frederickson was noted collector of Shakespeare and Shelley, the printer of the Brooklyn Eagle during the 1850's, and cotton merchant who made great success supplying the Union Army during the Civil War.  His library was disperse over eight sales during the 1870's and 1880's, with his final sale taking place after his death in 1897. Carl Cannon, American Book Collectors pp. 154-55.  George Mckay, American Auction Catalogues, p. 14.  .

Description
Mexico City: November 17, 1847. About very good.. Broadside, approximately 12 x 8.5 inches. Previously folded, two small tape repairs on blank verso. Small chip at upper left corner. Contemporary manuscript rubrics. Light toning and dust soiling. This scarce order was issued by the Archbishop of Mexico two months after the capture of Mexico City by the United States Army. It contains six articles that detail instructions for administering the last rites and orders for several other difficult matters in the occupied city. The extreme unction is to be performed secretly only in the mornings and at night, unless the physician believes it is not possible to wait, and further instructions are given on how to proceed secretly but properly with the ritual. The fifth article states that that if the American troops insult the residents, the clergy should try to restore calm, to obtain assistance from the local guards, and to inform the American garrison commanders. The final article states that parish priests should, "Proceder con la mayor prudencia, y usar de los medios y vias mas suaves, á fin de evitar toda clase de disturbios." An interesting reflection of the official fear of American distaste for Catholicism; we locate only one example, at Yale.

Bound volume of eight uncommon pamphlets relating to the controversy initiated by Conyers Middleton's Free enquiry into the miraculous powers supposed to have subsisted in the Christian church from the earliest ages (1748). Leslie Stephen called Middleton's Free Enquiry 'incomparably the most effective [publication] of the whole deist controversy.' It was published the same year as Hume's first Enquiry which contains an essay, 'On Miracles.' Many years later, in My Own Life (London 1777), Hume confessed his chagrin: 'On my return from Italy, I had the mortification to find all England in a ferment, on account of Dr. Middleton's Free Enquiry, while my performance was entirely overlooked and neglected.' There was every reason to compare the two books, for the tendency of both was to undermine the belief in the miraculous. But whereas Hume was raising methodological difficulties about the possibility of providing adequate historical proof of such occurrences … Middleton was concerned primarily with the [adequacy of the] historical evidence actually available." - Encyclopedia of Philosophy. Middleton was prepared to accord greater authority to the miracles recounted in the Bible than to those attested to by the later Church Fathers. Includes: A Dissertation on II Peter i. 19.: Occasioned by Middleton's Free Enquiry, directed at the arguments in Anthony Collins' deistic Discourse on the Grounds and Reasons of the Christian Religion (1724). Ashton's opposition to Middleton is said to have caused a permanent rupture in the relationship with his friend and patron Horace Walpole.; An Impartial Examination of the Bishop of London's Late Appendix to a Dissertation on the Sense of the Ancients before Christ upon the Circumstances and Consequences of the Fall.: Printed by the "learned printer," William Bowyer. Sherlock had been an object of Middleton's attacks.; Remarks on Dr. Sherlock's, Now Bishop of London's, First Dissertation; in a Letter to His Lordship.; The Plan of a Supplement to Dr. Middleton's Free Enquiry, Exhibited in a Dissertation on the Baptism and Miraculous Gifts of the Holy Ghost.; An Examination of the Consequences of Dr. Middleton's Free Enquiry, &c.; Two Questions, Previous to Dr. Middleton's Free Enquiry, Impartially Considered: Thirty-five years before Sykes was part of a small group associated with Samuel Clarke at Cambridge and a partisan of Bentley in an earlier dispute with Middleton.; An Impartial Examination of the Free Inquiry: The Primitive Fathers Vindicated, and the Necessity of Miracles maintain'd, to the Conclusion of the Third Century. in A Letter to Dr. Middleton; Some Remarks upon Mr. Church's Vindication of Miraculous Powers, &c., with An Observation or Two upon Dr. Stebbing's Christianity Justified, So Far as Relates to This Subject.

Stained, edges rubbed, pages foxed. 1850 Hard Cover. 405, 2 pp. A biography of the author whose life was immortalized by James Boswell. Samuel Johnson, byname Dr. Johnson, (born September 18, 1709, Lichfield, Staffordshire, England - died December 13, 1784, London), English critic, biographer, essayist, poet, and lexicographer, regarded as one of the greatest figures of 18th-century life and letters. Johnson once characterized literary biographies as 'mournful narratives,' and he believed that he lived 'a life radically wretched.' Yet his career can be seen as a literary success story of the sickly boy from the Midlands who by talent, tenacity, and intelligence became the foremost literary figure and the most formidable conversationalist of his time. For future generations, Johnson was synonymous with the later 18th century in England. The disparity between his circumstances and achievement gives his life its especial interest. - Britannica

Description
New York: Tiger Beat / New American Library. Near Fine. 1972. First Edition. Softcover. [nice tight clean copy, with just a touch of handling wear]. Mass Market PB (B&W photographs) "An Official Tiger Beat Publication," presenting capsulized life stories of 100 "Super Soul Stars," compiled by the editors of Right On! Magazine. "Read all about the Jackson Five, Ike and Tina, Aretha, Temptations, Supremes and 95 other Soul greats -- How they made it -- Where to Write them -- And, as a special bonus chapter, Right On! has carefully put together 'How To Become A Soul Star,' a special section containing key information, addresses and names about all the Soul Labels and Soul Publishers -- What to do with your Soul Material." An absolute Who's Who of the Black music world of that time, containing entries on just about any performer that you can think of, and a few I'll bet you can't. (Pharoah Sanders, anybody? Or Marc Copage?) The only (slight) drawback is that the entries are not arranged alphabetically, nor is there an alpha index -- but there is a table of contents, so it's not too much of a chore to find the people you might be looking for. Very uncommon, especially in such beautiful condition (I suspect most copies have probably fallen apart from intensive flipping-through). Not surprisingly, OCLC records only four institutional copies. .
