Description
Philadelphia: Gravity Press, 1976. Tiny spot of water damage visible on bottom corner of first ten pages, with warping to wrappers; very good.. First Edition. Oblong quarto. SIGNED and INSCRIBED, "To Jeff from William Larson on 10/23/70 at 4:26 pm." Revelatory collection of digitally generated images created by William Larson between 1969-1976. Gitterman Gallery's 2015 retrospective of the series explained the process, "Larson used a Graphic Sciences DEX 1 Teleprinter, a sophisticated early fax machine, which converted pictures, text and sound into digitally-generated audio signals. These signals were transmitted over a telephone line and a stylus burned the image onto a special carbon-based paper, creating a unique 'electronic drawing.' He was able to manipulate these images by altering the voltage of the output during the printing process, by moving the stylus during printing and by sending multiple transmissions to the same page, electronically layering images, text and visual representations of sound." Important and underrated generative artist book.
