Description
5/1/93. Suggesting that God will take care of her, he offers comfort: “Our Lord has a special love for children and we know that he is watching over you. Please take care and may Our Lord bless and keep you.”; With a signed photograph to the same childSarah Pachl was a disabled child who lived in Minnesota. She was born in the early 1990s and had developmental and physical disabilities, including epilepsy, Dandy Walker syndrome (a congenital brain malformation involving the cerebellum), autism spectrum disorder, scoliosis, and bilateral hearing loss. Her father wrote former President Reagan about her, hoping perhaps Reagan would have some words of inspiration he could pass on to his daughter as she got older. If so, he was not disappointed.Typed letter signed, on his letterhead, Washington, January 5, 1993, to Miss Sarah Pachl. “Mrs. Reagan and I are very sorry to hear of your illness. We understand that you are now at home and in the loving care of your parents. I know that it’s not much fun being sick, but a smile each day will help to speed your recovery. Our Lord has a special love for children and we know that he is watching over you. Please take care and may Our Lord bless and keep you.”Photograph signed, from Reagan to Miss Paschl, reading ""To Sarah, Nice meeting you, Ronald Reagan.""It was typical of his warmth and caring that Reagan would take time to comfort a sick child. And as for knowing about illness, it was just around this time that he developed symptoms of Alzheimer’s Disease. The following year he had to cease his correspondence altogether.
