Description
1922. Full Limp Red Calf. Slipcase -- marbled paper pastedown on all sides other than opening. Chemise or inner folder -- thick glossy card stock, all sides, other than that has red calf, with title label. Emily Swinton. Magnificent illuminated manuscript version of the Rubaiyat, or some verses from the Rubaiyat. The illuminated borders are singular -- their design is unlike that we are familiar with, and not even vaguely similar to anything we have ever seen produced by a latter-day illuminator, professional or amateur. Their tracery is of blues, greens, reds, some yellow in a few instances, and not least, the all important gilt. The illuminator surely was paying homage to some Islamic and Persian illumination in her palette, but overall these sources are but influences; the illuminations are far from merely imitative. The design pulls you in, and as one gazes longer one will discover small figurative imagery woven into the lines and swirls of the larger ornamentation. Words are beyond us to come close to capturing their complexity and character -- our photos hopefully will impart something of that. Let us just say the colors are deep and bold. Within these extraordinary borders is the calligraphic text rendered in a stunning, easily legible Gothic Fraktur script. And there are four dream-like miniature watercolors as well of scenic Persian villages. N.d., circa early 1920s. 4to. 28.5 by 19 cm. Unpaginated, 14 leaves with illumination -- illumination on one side. The back side of the leaf then left blank. Tissue guards for each page with illumination. The first leaf has no text -- it is a rectangular abstract design suggestive perhaps of a spectacular rug and inspired by such illuminated painting as one finds in many an antiquarian Koran. The next leaf is the title page with the words appearing to float on the page. The lettering has a distinctive verticality, and the gilt letters are both clearly the letters they are supposed to be but have an abstraction that one can imagine they are Arabic script as well. The last two leaves, with a more restrained, formalistic illumination, has evenly spaced dome-shaped pointers as one finds in Koranic decoration to highlight important passages. The binding, slipcase and chemise are functional but don't really do the contents justice. Other than some crease marks on the calf and light wear overall to these protective features, the binding and slipcase present no issues.

Description
A group of six postcards, all signed “A. P. B.” [Anna Peyton Bolling], and all dated in 1880. One is addressed to Annie F. Belchers on Old Street in Petersburg; the others, which are progress or report cards, are addressed to Annie’s father, J. S. Belchers at the same address. Anna Bolling was an assistant teacher at the Petersburg High School and became it’s principal in 1876. Reading these cards convinces one that she was a most kind and caring teacher. The first card, to Annie on January 15th, 1880: “My dear Child. I was very sorry to hear from the children that you have become sick--hope it is nothing serious, and that you will be at school on Monday. Yours fondly, A. P. B.” The others, by way of report cards, are all affirming of Annie -- “one of my best scholars. A. P. B.” Referring to a young girl as a scholar was an admirably advanced understanding. Anna Bolling is buried at Blandford Cemetery.

Description
London: Constable & Company, Ltd, 1925. Hardcover. Very Good. Hardcover. First Edition. With laid-in two page letter and postcard from Walker to Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet, and with de Kiewiet's ownership signature on the free front endpaper. Eric Anderson Walker (September 1886 - February 1976) was King George V Professor of History at the University of Cape Town and Vere Harmsworth Professor of Imperial and Naval History at the University of Cambridge. He was a pioneer in writing the history of South Africa and later an important historian of the British Empire, though by the end of his life his work was seen as dated and Eurocentric. Cornelis Willem de Kiewiet (May1902 - February 1986) was a 20th-century historian most notable for having served as president of Cornell University and the University of Rochester. De Kiewiet was born in the Netherlands, but grew up in South Africa, where his father went as a diamond and gold-seeker and later worked as an employee of the Transvaal Republic's Railway. In the early 1920s, Cornelis earned his bachelor's and master's degrees in history from the University of Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, and, in 1927, he earned his Ph.D. in History from the University of London. The inserted correspondence from Walker to de Kiewiet was written in 1927, while de Kiewiet was working on his Ph.d. The texts discuss South African history during and after the Boer War, and such figures as Southey and Froude. They do not pertain to this work directly. The book is about Lord de Villiers (1842 - 1914), a Cape Colony judge and lawyer who served as Attorney General in the Molteno Government, Chief Justice for the Cape Colony, and later the first Chief Justice for the Union of South Africa. Serving for 40 years, he is often considered to be the most influential judge in South African history. Bound in original dark blue cloth with gilt author and title to spine. Corners bumped and some wrinkling to cloth but still very good. Interior pages also very good. Frontispiece portrait of Lord de Villiers. 523 pages including index. AFRICA/032916.
