Description
1629. Ten columns, 20 characters per column. 43 folding leaves. Ten chapters in one vol. Large 8vo, orig. brown wrappers (rather rubbed), new stitching. [Japan]: from the colophon, in trans.: “February 1629.” First edition to be printed in Japan of the summary and update of what is probably the first practical manual of meditation in China (Sekiguchi, in trans.); it served as the model for almost all subsequent meditation manuals (Swanson, p. 2). It was “by far the most comprehensive systematization of Buddhist practise to date.”–Neal Arvid Donner, The Great Calming and Contemplation of Chih-I. Chapter One: The Synopsis. Translated, Annotated, and with an Introduction (Ph.D. thesis, University of British Columbia, April 1976), p. 6. This is a very rare wooden movable type book; we find no copy in WorldCat, Kawase, or NIJL. While there is no direct evidence of place of printing, we believe this is a rare example of an Eizan-ban, “editions published at the Enryakuji monastery complex on Mount Hiei outside Kyoto. There were few of these in the medieval period…Eizan printing came into its own on a large scale only from the end of the sixteenth century, with the introduction of movable-type printing. Typographic printing flourished at various temples on Hieizan from the Keicho to Kan’ei periods (1596-1644), and with the publication of Chinese works as well as Tendai scriptures, publication and distribution at Hieizan began to develop into the beginnings of a commercial enterprise.”–K.B. Gardner, “Centres of Printing in Medieval Japan: late Heian to early Edo period” in British Library Occasional Papers 11. Japanese Studies (ed. by Yu-Ying Brown), London: 1990, p. 164. Zhiyi (538-97), one of the most influential monks in Chinese Buddhist history, was the founder of the Tiantai (Japanese: Tendai) tradition of Buddhism in China. “Tiantai was the earliest of the three great traditions to emerge in the sixth and seventh centuries (Faxiang and Huayan being the other two), and it wrought a fundamental change in Chinese Buddhism, marking a shift away from the kind of translation and exegesis that had been driven mainly by a desire to understand correctly the writings of the Indian masters towards a Buddhism more in tune with Chinese attitudes, thought and habit.”–Richard Bowring, The Religious Traditions of Japan, 500-1600, p. 119. The present work is Zhiyi’s “concise and influential meditation manual…This short text is a summary and update of the Tz’u-ti ch’an-men [The Gradual Practice of Ch’an/Dhyana] (not, as commonly misunderstood, of the Mo-ho chih-kuan). It was probably compiled while Chih-i [Zhiyi] was sequestered on Mt. T’ien-t’ai (from the age of 38 to 48) — a time when he had a ‘great awakening’ into the threefold truth… “This text is an introductory manual for ‘sitting in Zen meditation’…The text opens with a lucid exposition of the ideal balance of chih (ch’an meditation and the concentrated and quiescent state attained thereby) and kuan (contemplation and the wisdom attained thereby).”–Paul L. Swanson, “Ch’an and Chih-kuan. T’ien-t’ai Chih-i’s View of ‘Zen’ and the Practice of the Lotus Sutra,” pp. 3-4. A very good copy, preserved in a chitsu. There is some mostly marginal worming and a few stains. With the seals of the Saishoji Temple (no longer operating); Shunkichi Satoh and his library, Shigyo’an; and Tadashi Okada (died 1984), businessman and poet. ❧ This copy appeared in the 40th-anniversary catalogue (No. 42) of the great Japanese bookseller Shigeo Sorimachi. That important catalogue, published in 1972, was devoted to movable type books, and our book was item 377 (pp. 412-13). Sekiguchi Shindai, Tendai sho shikan no kenkyu (Tokyo: Sankibo Busshorin,1954; repr. 1961).

Description
1985. Very Good. A collection that includes three Signed and Inscribed books, two Inscribed photographs and an Autograph Note in English Signed. The books (two in wrappers, the third an embossed leatherette hardcover) are generally very good with toning and wear at the extremities; the paperbacks have additional tape repaired spines and one is also dampstained with a few scrapes. The photos are fine in wooden frames and the ANS is about very good with some light toning and tape repairs to all four corners. The books include two written by Castro himself: a 1975 second edition of *Hoy Somos Un Pueblo Entero* [*Today We Are an Entire People*] Signed and dated in the year of publication, and a 1985 first edition of *Esta Tiene Que Ser la Guerra Economica de Todo el Pueblo* [*This Must Be the Economic War of all People*] Inscribed: "Por Nuestra Patria [For Our Country] Fidel Castro." The third book is the 1951 yearbook of the University of Tampa, *Moroccan*, Inscribed on the title page on October 1955 in Spanish. Loosely translated it reads: "Thanks to Imelda and her friends of Tampa for help with our new revolution in Cuba Dr. Fidel Castro.” Castro came to Tampa in November, 1955 seeking support for his revolution – why he was asked to inscribe this yearbook is unknown. The two framed photos, each measuring 5" x 3½", show a uniformed Castro in a group shaking hands and another of him in profile. Each is Signed by Castro with brief notes referencing the revolution. Likely signed in 1955 since one is Inscribed to the same “Imelda.” The ANS is written in English on a piece of ruled paper, dated "Sep - 21- 1959," and sent from Havana. It reads: "To: Manuel Clark A great greeting from your friend in Cuba. I believe you are headed Towards a great road 'Until Victory Always' your friend Fidel Castro." A nice collection of rare signed and inscribed material from one of the most polarizing and influential political figures of the 20th Century. In just a few items it manages to encompass his life from popular revolutionary leader and celebrity who visited the U.S. in the 1950s to attract support for his cause, to that of prime minister of the new Cuba, and later the entrenched leader of the embargo Communist nation. Further details available upon request.

Also known by her married name Madeleine Arrigon, was a French publisher and author of children's novels. Description
Tampa, Florida: Distinctly Styled Corvettes, 1988. 1st Edition. All housed in 2 black leather zippered portfolios [13" x 16-3/8"], with handles. One with gilt lettering applied to one side: "D S C Greenwood". Images generally clear & sharp, Nr Fine. Portfolios show light wear, VG+.. 57 [primarily] large format [11" x 14"] color photographs of different Corvettes & divers aspects thereof, one stamped on the recto "Michael Daniel, [xxx] Photograph, Tampa" Here offered a no-doubt unique pair of sales portfolios compiled by Corvette customization firm and dealer, Distinctly Styled Corvettes of Tampa, Florida. According to publicly available Florida corporate records, the firm, run by a Graddy Richard (likely the Cajun, ‘Ree-shard’ pronunciation) operated from about 1986-1988, the height of production of the C4 (Fourth Generation) Chevrolet Corvette. Richard seems to have sourced fiberglass aerodynamic and ground effects packages from the prominent, boutique customizer, Greenwood, also packaging his own custom-designed modifications to the seminal American sports car, including options for wood-inlayed dashboards, upgraded wheel packages, etc… The included brochures contain a photocopied appearance on the company in a 1987 issue of MOTOR TREND magazine: "Distinctly styled Corvettes is another tuner that turns out high quality work. We had the opportunity to drive three examples from the company, including a striking Callaway Twin Turbo, and left quite impressed with the company’s commitment. Like Quality Motorsports, Distinctly Styled Corvettes uses a number of Greenwood components. Special care is used in mating these pieces to the body and color-matching the paint. The company is also noted for individual touches like adding Corvette badges to the targa bar and gold lettering of engine identification. Distinctly Styled Corvettes often uses BBB component wheels and mates them with Michelin XGT tires. Genuine wood dash panels are also a frequently installed modification. The firm’s prices vary considerably since each car is built to the owner’s preference. Typical modifications generally run between $2000 and $5000.” (Motor Trend, September 1987; p. 44) A must-have, primary source photographic archive depicting the iconic late 1980’s American Sports car.

Description
2ff., one ca. 120 x 190 mm., the other 140 x 225 mm., versos blank. In the same scribal hand. In German. - "Confirmation of receipt of 60 fl., which I have received on today's date for my Polka 'Wunderfontaine' op. 86, as honorarium from Herr Carl Haslinger in cash and correctly. Vienna, May 14, 1867." Signed "CM Ziehrer" and "[?]Jenasch" - "Installment of fl. 100 on today's date received from H[err] Carl Haslinger in cash. July 18, 1868" signed "CM Ziehrer" Both leaves unevenly trimmed; small ink stain to 1867 receipt, obscuring word preceding signature. Ziehrer, an Austrian bandmaster and composer, "was ... invited to represent Austria at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, which was followed by an extended American tour, and which led to his dismissal for overstaying his leave. Renaming his band the Chicagoer Konzert-Kapelle he toured Germany widely. ... The greatest rival to the Strauss brothers, Ziehrer's long career was similar to Johann Strauss II except for the periods as a military bandmaster. This experience gave a brashness and swagger to his compositions which, influenced by local folk music, created his unmistakable style." John E. Diamond in Grove Music Online.
