Description
[United Kingdom], 1950. Various sizes, (labels no larger than 9.5 x 8 cm.). A collection of over six hundred fifty unused full-color beer bottle labels from over fifty British breweries. There is some duplication, so not each label is unique within the collection. Labels are housed in forty-four Henri Wintermans’ Café Crème cigar tin boxes and arranged by brewer. Breweries represented in the collection include: Anvil, Charles Wells, Guinness, Holdens, J. Shipstone & Son, J.C. & R.H. Palmer, J.P. Simpkiss and Son, John Smith’s Tadcaster, Leith, Mackeson, Mann, Crossman & Paulin, Mansfield, Marstons, Matthew Brown, Miners Arms, Mitchell & Butler, Morland & Co., Morrell, Norwich, Okell, Paines, R.W. Randall, Ridley, Robinson, Ruddles, Sainsbury, Samuel Webster, Scottish & Newcastle, Shepard Neame, Taylor Walker, Tennent Caledonian, Tetley, Theakston, Thwaite, Timothy Taylor, Tollemache & Corbold, Tomson & Wotton, Traquair House, Truman Oldham, Tuborg, United Breweries, Vaux, W. Butler & Co, W.M Darley, Wadworth, Waitrose, Watney, Whitbread, Wilson, Yates & Jackson. Multiple beers from each brewery are included from India Pale Ales and diet beers to those created to honor royalty or for the commemoration of an event. About one-third of breweries in the United Kingdom date their first labels to the 1880s, when the machinery for bottled beer production was introduced. The majority of brewers in Great Britain left the bottling to individual shops, public houses and wholesalers. Most brewers established their own bottling stores in the early twentieth century, but Whitbread of London founded theirs in 1868. Many of the labels in this collection identify both brewer and bottler. A wide variety of design styles comprise the collection, from minimalist graphics to rich illustrations; most labels employ full-color or at least a multi-color palette. Some slight wear to cigar tins. Labels are primarily near fine.

Description
1877. Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1877. Original terra-cotta cloth decorated in black. First "Collectible" Edition of this play first performed in 1851. We say first "collectible" because there are only four known copies of the original 1851 pamphlet; supposedly a fifth, from which Osgood printed this edition, was destroyed in the Boston fire of 1879. This is a volume in the publisher's "Vest Pocket Series," so named for its diminutive size (a second Dickens "comic burletta" was published in this series the same year -- IS SHE HIS WIFE?). This copy is terra-cotta in color; others are green, without priority. It is a bright, near-fine copy (minor rubbing at the tips, one small mark on the fore-edge of the leaves) -- quite uncommon in this condition. Eckel pp 64-5.

Description
Gainesville: University Press of Florida, (2002). Signed by Gene Petterson, Roy Peter Clark and Raymond Arsenault. Octavo, gold cloth & white boards (hardcover), 305 pp. Near-Fine, with light foxing (age darkening) to endpapers and edges; in a Near-Fine dust jacket. From dust jacket: The Changing South of Gene Patterson celebrates the work of one of America’s most influential journalists, who wrote in a time and place of dramatic social and political upheaval. The editor of the Atlanta Constitution from 1960 through 1968, Patterson wrote directly to his fellow white southerners every day, working to persuade them to change their ways. His words were so inspirational that he was asked by Walter Cronkite to read live on the CBS Evening News his most famous column, about the Birmingham church bombing. This volume includes more than 120 of Patterson’s best pieces, selected from some 3,200 columns. These columns offer probing commentary on the crucial issues of race, civil rights, social justice, and desegregation; some reveal examples of political and moral leadership, drwan from every corner of southern culture. Introductory essays, framing Patterson’s work as journalism and literature, place it in the context of southern history and the evolution of white southern liberalism. Patterson himself contributes a new essay; reflecting on his life, work, and times.
